Preview Kanye West's 'American Idol' Audition

"My name is Kanye," rapper says in surprise appearance. "I'm from the south side of Chicago"

Kanye West introduces himself to the judges in a sneak preview of the rapper's surprise 'American Idol' audition

When the American Idol auditions rolled into San Francisco in October, among the starry-eyed contestants hoping to win a Golden Ticket into the music competition's final season was a talented-but-unknown artist by the name of Kanye West. The rapper's Idol journey, one of the many surprises Idol has in store to celebrate its final season, was previewed in a 30-second look into his audition.

"My name is Kanye, I'm from the south side of Chicago," West tells the judges in the clip. "I'm originally a producer. I always wanted to rap and no one really believed in me, so I wanted to try some things out, ya know?" "What are you going to do for us today," judge Jennifer Lopez asks West, incredulously. While the preview doesn't show performance footage from the rapper's audition, West delivered an a cappella take on his "Gold Digger" for the judges.

The entirety of West's fauxdition – and the answer to whether or not he was awarded a Golden Ticket – will air when American Idol returns for its final season in January.
