Jon Stewart distilled 17 years of fake news anchoring into a brilliant, wordless segment on The Daily Show Monday night, slamming Mike Huckabee's comparison of the Iran nuclear deal to the Holocaust, and bemoaning the Trump-ification of the 2016 election.
The quote in question came from Huckabee's interview with Sirius XM conservative talk station Patriot, in which he called President Obama "so naive, he would trust the Iranians and he would take the Israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven." Stewart responded not with a snide quip but a confounded look as the segment's apt title flashed on the screen, "Democalypse 2016 — Urrrrgggghhhhhhhh."
Stewart played the quote again and, following an exasperated scream, ran a montage of other presidential hopefuls denouncing Huckabee, which seemed to settle the host for a bit. But the Republican candidate refused to backtrack, using his three trips to Auschwitz to back up his statement.
Cue a horrified outburst from Stewart, which quickly turned into pleading for the sweetheart Huckabee who once played bass and discussed his love of Popeye's chicken and good Southern mothers on his old Fox News show.
So what happened, Stewart gestured? A comment from CNN's Nia-Malika Henderson suggested that Donald Trump's offensive, caustic stumping — and rising poll numbers — might be prompting other candidates to act out for attention. Stewart seemed to like Henderson's explanation, and another montage of Huckabee's recent heinous remarks suggested there's some truth to it.
And while Stewart never did find his words, he did discover a middle finger tucked inside his blazer.
