Jennifer Lopez Dance Competition Headed to NBC

Pop star to executive produce 'World of Dance,' which boasts $1 million grand prize

NBC has ordered a 10-episode first season of World of Dance, a new dance competition executive produced by Jennifer Lopez.


The show was created in partnership with the dance brand, World of Dance, and the winner of the competition will receive a $1 million dollar prize. The show will feature solo dancers, duos and crews competing in array of styles like hip-hop, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, stomping and even clogging.

The first round of casting for World of Dance is open online and participants can audition in one of three divisions: Juniors, for solo performers or groups up to 20 people, ages eight to 16; Upper, for solo performers or groups up to four people, ages 17 and older; and Team, for groups with five to 20 performers, ages 17 and older.

Dancers must submit a video of their routine online by August 26th. A casting producer will contact those selected for callback auditions, which will be held in September in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago.

Those that make it onto World of Dance will face-off against the other performers in their division until only one remains from each group. Those three will then compete for the $1 million grand prize. The competition will be judged by a panel of yet-to-be named experts, who will use a point system developed by World of Dance that takes into account routine, execution, presentation and crowd appeal.

It's unclear if Lopez's role in World of Dance is strictly behind-the-scenes, or if she'll appear on camera as well. The pop star did, however, appear in a promo clip announcing the program. Along with World of Dance, Lopez will continue to star on NBC's cop drama, Shades of Blue, which will return for its second season next year.

In April, Lopez released a new single, "Ain't Your Mama," her first since inking a multi-album deal with Epic Records. Lopez, however, has yet to announce a follow-up to her 2014 album, A.K.A.
