Best Drama, 1994
In a contest that was sort of the John the Baptist to a much bigger Best Drama upset five years later (see below), the heavy 1994 favorite for the top category honor was NYPD Blue, the cop show that redefined cutting-edge for network television. (Thank you, Hill Street Blues co-creator Steven Bochco and future Deadwood genius David Milch!) But its headline-grabbing first season lost out to Picket Fences, an oddball small-town dramedy from quirkmeister David E. Kelley. Yes, this actually happened.
