Best Comedy, 2014
The Emmys' obsession with rewarding the same comedies over and over (and over and over and over) has become a joke as long-running as anything on the comedies themselves, and Modern Family is the modern-day heir to the long reign of the god-emperor Frasier two decades earlier. But with Louie and Veep at the height of their powers, Silicon Valley making its debut, and Orange Is the New Black shifting the entire TV-watching paradigm with its streaming first season, the time looked ripe for the slumping saga of the Pritchett-Dunphy clan to step aside. No dice: The show picked up Best Comedy Emmy number five. Better luck this year, everything that isn't Modern Family!
