'I'm Dying Up Here'

Showtime, Jun. 4
Based loosely on William Knoedelseder's seminal book about the Seventies' L.A. comedy scene, this Showtime series stars Michael Angarano, Clark Duke and Ari Graynor as up-and-coming comics trying to infiltrate the era's dog-eat-dog-then-steals-ther-dog's-jokes world of stand-up. Melissa Leo plays "Goldie Herschlag," who we're assuming is based on the Comedy Store's legendary impresario Mitzi Shore; given that Jim Carrey is executive-producing (and per a recent TCA panel, said he contributed plenty of personal stories from those glory days), you should expect lots of authentic desperation about failed Tonight Show auditions and his time in the ha-ha shack trenches. We've got high expectations for this one. DF
