The Go! Team

An amateur's after-work project turns into the feel-good album of the year

WHO Despite the "team" in their name, Brighton, England's the Go! Team sprung from the mind of one man -- thirty-year-old Ian Parton. Melding homemade beats with samples from his encyclopedic record collection, Parton's bedroom project served as a pleasant diversion from his day job as a TV documentarian. But then a British indie label released his 2000 EP Get It Together, and live shows were booked. So he solicited friends and took out ads in local papers to assemble a six-person ensemble: Parton on guitar, harmonica and drums; Sam Dook on guitar, banjo and drums; bassist Jamie Bell; drummer Chi; multi-instrumentalist Silke; and lady MC Ninja.

SOUND A contagiously happy mishmash of live instruments, soul samples and effects -- think of the theme music to Charlie Brown crossed with Fatboy Slim.

LIGHTNING STRIKES The band's debut album, Thunder Lightning Strike, was nominated for the U.K.'s prestigious Mercury Prize. "This was a homemade project: deliberately low-fi, without much money behind it," says Parton. "It's pretty satisfying to show that you can do stuff in your own bedroom and still get it heard."

LOOK FOR Thunder is out in the U.S. in October.
