Meet Your New Stereo

The hi-fi is dead, replaced by a computer full of digital music.

By STEVE MORGENSTERN

First, computers kicked stereo systems out of college dorm rooms as we moved from CDs to MP3s. Next, the compact stereo system in the family den gave way to a computer with good speakers, one that could not only play music but DVDs and games, too. And now PCs are creeping into America's living rooms, cunningly disguised to look like audio components while delivering a complete digital entertainment package, including live and recorded TV, with a couch-potato-friendly remote control. On these pages we celebrate the networked-music takeover, with computers as media hubs and add-ons that share the wealth throughout your home. And since you may have to venture outside once in a while, we've also gathered up some of the slickest laptops on the planet.
