John Cena's relationship with his girlfriend Nikki Bella was put under the spotlight once again in the lead-up to Wrestlemania 33. Prior to their mixed tag-team match, The Miz said Cena was jealous of his relationship with Maryse and Maryse said Bella was jealous of her because she'll never have her own wedding ring. There was a lot more where that came from – "Nikki and John's fabricated lives spits on every real relationship and it stops now," The Miz said – but Cena vowed to make them pay by destroying them at Wrestlemania.
Cena did just that, but he also had another message for anyone questioning how real his relationship is with Bella. Once they handled business, Cena invited Bella to the center of the ring, got down on one knee and asked her the question everyone – including himself – has been waiting for, recalling an emotional moment between the two just before Bella went into neck surgery. "Right as they were wheeling you to the OR, you were glassy and in-and-out, and my last chance, the very last second, I said stop. And I leaned in and I whispered ‘can you hear me?' And you said ‘yes.’ And I said ‘well, I only have one question.’ You said ‘what is it.’ I said ‘do you know one day I’m going to marry you?’ And you said ‘yes.' I just need you to say ‘yes’ one more time."
Cena popped the question, and to the surprise of everybody, seemed to be wrestling with the little box in his pocket the entire time.
"I've been waiting so long to ask you this," Cena said. "Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace, will you marry me?"
And, of course, she said yes.
Later in the night, Cena tweeted the following: "I want to thank my always expressive 'family' the @WWEUniverse for allowing me to have a #Wrestlemania moment that I will NEVER forget!" He said he'd been planning this moment for over a year. Nikki's sister, Brie, also took to Twitter to officially welcome him to the family.
