Artist: The Willowz
Album: Chautauqua
Review: On its third album, this coed California band does exuberant garage-rock better than most of
its sloppy peers. Chautauqua is a little more polished than the Willowz's earlier stuff, but the joys are similar: big, ballsy tracks like "Siren Song" plus trippier, genuinely engaging psych rock
like "Waiting to Fall," with a load
of good, basic melodies and expertise that takes a couple of spins...

Sympathy for the Record Industry
The second disc from these O.C. kids is a sweet-and-sour cocktail of buzz-saw guitars, Stooges propulsion and coed sloganeering -- not to mention the rare garage-rock album that was actually recorded in a garage. Barnburners like "Cons and Tricks" set catchy choruses over a minimalist rush of sloppy grooves and guitars, and after blasting through twenty cuts in just under an hour, singer-bassist Jessica Reynoza intones, "We can die now." The Willowz are four pretty young things from Anaheim, California, whose excellently shambolic new album, Talk in Circles, takes garage rock back to its roots -- literally.
"We recorded it in our bass player's brother's garage," says singer-guitarist Richie James Follin. "We'd do our guitar tracks sitting in my minivan with the mixing board on the seat. It's better than spending so much money in a studio."
