Playing with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones in the new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures is a dream come true for Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl, the singer/dummer tells Rolling Stone in an exclusive Q&A in our next issue.

Check out photos of more supergroups, from Cream to Audioslave.

Grohl’s Zeppelin worship goes all the way back to his teenage years, when he got the first of three Zep-inspired tattoos — he’s got John Bonham’s three-circle Led Zeppelin IV logo tattooed in three places. “I did the first one myself when I was 16,” he says. “I tried to get different colored ink to make it seem pro, but now it looks like someone put a cigarette out on my fucking arm.” (more…)

Them Crooked Vultures Streaming Entire New LP; Read Rolling Stone’s Album Review

11/10/09, 1:54 pm EST

Them Crooked Vultures’ self-titled debut album won’t be released until next Tuesday, November 17th, but you can listen to it right now. The supergroup of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones are streaming the hard-rocking, Zeppelin-inspired album in its entirety now over at TCV’s official site. This gift comes just a week after the Vultures offered up their song “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” to fans as a free download.

Inspired by the Vultures’ generosity, for your reading pleasure we’re posting our review for Them Crooked Vultures now before it hits stands in our next issue. In his three-and-a-half star review of TCV, Rob Sheffield writes, “The album sticks to the sort of low-end guitar boogie that Homme and Grohl were blasting in their Camaros when they bummed their first cigarettes.” With Jones in tow, the supergroup sticks to their Zep roots, as the track “Elephants” “basically crunches every riff on Led Zeppelin II into seven dizzy minutes.”

Them Crooked Vultures Unleash First Single “New Fang,” Add Dates

10/26/09, 12:57 pm EST

Them Crooked Vultures have unveiled the studio version of “New Fang,” the first single off their self-titled debut album, over at twt.fm today. The supergroup — Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones — blend the heavy, jammy and psychedelic influences of their respective bands, and with Homme on lead vocals, “New Fang” sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Queens of the Stone Age album. The track opens with a few blissful seconds of Grohl’s monster drumming and launches into a groove propelled by Jones’ wandering bassline and a crunchy guitar riff that’s comparable to Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti rocker “The Wanton Song.”

The stream of “New Fang” is currently linking to an Amazon MP3 store page where fans can download the track for 99 cents, however Amazon says the song won’t be available for purchase until November 3rd. (more…)

The burning question that’s lingered since Them Crooked Vultures made their live debut August 9th at Chicago’s Metro has finally been answered: Rock’s newest supergroup announced today that they’ll released their self-produced and self-titled album on November 17th, a week and three months after the band of Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones first appeared onstage together.

After debuting in Chicago, the Vultures went a tour of European venues and festivals before returning to the states for a run of dates that concluded October 15th at New York’s Roseland Ballroom (read our review of the show here). “It’s a lot of new music,” said Them Crooked Vultures frontman Josh Homme onstage at the Roseland Ballroom for the New York debut of his supergroup with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones last night. “It’s not often you get to hear a bunch of music that you have no idea what’s gonna happen.”

Debuting in public seems like a coup in the age of instant leaks and message board spoilers. And Them Crooked Vultures got nothing short of a hero’s welcome for a show where the only material anyone knew was from spotty camera phone YouTubes and exactly 137 seconds of studio music floating around. They packed the enormous Roseland on name alone with tickets that went for $54.50; they sold tons of merch without a single leaked song to their name; they had a father and son team already running around in matching Them Crooked Vultures T-shirts.
