French Kids Go Zombie, Nail “Thriller” Lip Sync in a Single Take

10/24/08, 11:53 am EST

Rock Daily can’t get enough “Thriller” re-creations, so we had to share this new one via France, where the power of Michael Jackson and zombies brings together jocks, geeks, stoners and goths at a college big enough to nail down a single take of the song. The real question: how does it compare to the Filipino prisoners?

Pete Wentz’s “FNMTV” Premieres With Snoop Dogg, Awkwardness

6/16/08, 4:40 pm EST

In an attempt to revive the music video, Pete Wentz has created FNMTV, a bizarre combination of the VMAs, TRL and sadly deceased Making the Video that features the premieres of new clips. Friday night’s debut seemed like more of a celebration of awkwardness than the art of lip synching and cheesy acting, though.

Exhibit A: Wentz’s repeated references to his wife and (impending) kid lead Snoop to suck on a plastic nipple; the audience disses Snoop’s video … while he’s still standing there being interviewed.

Snoop Dogg Performs “Sensual Seduction” on “One Life to Live”

5/9/08, 12:15 pm EST

“Llanview, what it do?” asked Snoop Dogg, shouting out the fictional town on soap One Life to Live before launching into “Sensual Seduction” this week (he was also kind enough to remix the show’s theme song). “I’ve been a fan of One Life to Live since I was a baby,” Snoop reportedly said at the time his appearance was announced. “My momma always had it on the tube in the crib growing up.” New high for the Doggfather, or an all-time low? You be the judge.

Single Minded: Mariah Carey, Estelle, Bruce Springsteen

4/18/08, 11:15 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Mariah Carey, “Touch My Body” [R. Kelly Remix]
In this Mariah remix, Kells visits the club, boasts about his player status and drops the name of his new album. Strangely, he does not sing the line “If there’s a camera up in here…” You’d think he’d give that one special emphasis.

Estelle featuring Kanye West, “American Boy” [Stockholm Syndrome Remix]
In this remix, London R&B singer gets sliced, scattered, twisted and diced. Which, apparently, is also a way you can order eggs at a Waffle House.

Bruce Springsteen featuring Alejandro Escovedo, “Always a Friend” [Live in Houston]
Proof Bruce isn’t just palling around with Arcade Fire and the National: here’s a searing performance of “Always a Friend” with legendary vocalist and guitarist Alejandro Escovedo. (more…)

Fricke’s Picks: Soulshake Express

3/28/08, 12:50 pm EST

The liner notes in the CD booklet of Heavy Music (Beatville) by Sweden’s Soulshake Express are almost forty years old, borrowed (with a credit) from the back of the Jeff Beck Group’s 1969 howitzer-guitar classic, Beck-Ola: “Today, with all the hard competition in the music business, it’s almost impossible to come up with anything totally original. So we haven’t. However, at the time this album was made, the accent was on heavy music.” If you’re going to quote from the best, you’d better be a bruiser yourself, and the Soulshake Express — singer-guitarist David Eriksson, guitarist Marcus Andersson, bassist Robert Schlyter, drummer Joakim Eriksson and organist Martin Hammar — make all the right noises, as if they were born and raised under the floorboards at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom. If they don’t do it live already, the Express should cover Bob Seger’s crushing 1967 single “Heavy Music.” They’ve got what it takes.
