Pete Doherty Pleads Guilty to Drug Charges, Being Tardy

7/3/07, 11:30 am EST

peteWe usually avoid reporting on drug-related Pete Doherty news, mainly because it’s more of a “daily occurrence” than “actual news,” but today we’ll temporarily lift our Doherty-on-drugs embargo. This morning, Doherty pleaded guilty to a litany of charges in a London court stemming from a May 5 arrest. Doherty was pulled over for two driving offenses, and police uncovered marijuana and crack cocaine at the time of arrest, and ketamine and heroin after a strip search. This morning, Doherty played the “Will he or won’t he show up?” game that fans attending his concerts are quite familiar with. After Doherty was two and a half hours late to his own hearing, the judge issued an arrest warrant. Doherty magically appeared minutes later, and was forced to plead guilty to showing up late for court. The judge — who observed, “It seems that there has not been much difference in his use of drugs” — sent Doherty to rehab; he’s due to reappear in court August 7 for sentencing.

Pete Doherty Watch: A Poetry-Reading Drug Counselor?

10/4/06, 2:45 pm EST

THE LATEST: On Thursday Pete will be reading selections by one of his favorite poets, Siegfried Sassoon, on British television in honor of National Poetry Day. Pete reportedly gave colorful descriptions of how literature got him through his stint in prison, citing Emily Dickinson and Rimbaud as particularly helpful.

“[I read] Crime And Punishment!” he told The Guardian, explaining his literary choices in lockdown. “Except my cellmate at the time kept pulling his shorts down and getting his knob out, and going, ‘Is this normal, Pete?’ And I’m trying to read.” That must have been . . . distracting?

Maybe these little anecdotes will serve Pete well if he takes a job as drug counselor at the Priory clinic, which he left, oh you know, nine days ago. Apparently the counselors on staff were particularly impressed with Pete’s willingness to admit he has a problem. We’re hoping it takes more than a well-timed display of honesty to qualify one for this kind of job, but whatever. He does have a lot of fans to care for back at the clinic.

Pete Doherty Watch: Purchasing Drug Paraphernalia in Dublin?

9/28/06, 2:32 pm EST

THE LATEST: Recent reports allege that just three days and fifteen hours after getting out of rehab, Pete was spotted buying two hypodermic syringes from a drug store in Dublin. Now let’s not jump to conclusions. They could be for . . . something other than shooting drugs. Right?

In related news, it seems that Pete’s rehab stint at the Priory Clinic actually upped attendance. Apparently, during Doherty’s spell at the facility some of his groupies took to showing up and complaining of anxiety and other ailments, then asking if Pete was around. According to a source at the clinic, “Pete has even visited some of the girls and helped them write poems. They are hooked on his every word — it’s frightening. They think being in rehab is cool . . . it’s not.”

Thanks for the clarification there, source.

Pete Doherty and Kate Moss: In Love, Onstage, And Moving to New Jersey?

9/27/06, 3:56 pm EST

Life is so exciting since Pete got out of rehab! Kate Moss apparently joined the rocker onstage Monday night at Carlow’s Music Factory in Ireland, helping sing a rendition of “La Belle et La Bete” off Babyshambles debut Down in Albion. In addition to allegedly drinking lager in front of her sober boyfriend and allowing these attractive pics of her nostrils to be taken, Kate apparently smoked up a storm in the club, which is totally illegal in Ireland. Pete was allegedly lighting up too, and the rebellious pair could face prosecution for their reckless abuse of public air.

UPDATE: Okay, now Pete is going to design clothes and, after the seemingly inevitable wedding, the couple is settling down in leafy New Jersey? Whatever.

Pete Doherty Watch: Getting Married Rumor #598, This Time It’s True?

9/25/06, 12:41 pm EST

THE LATEST: The (totally unsubstantiated) rumor is that it’s almost “I Do” time for a newly sober Pete Doherty and his long-suffering girlfriend Kate Moss. The rocker will apparently be let out of the Priory Clinic sometime in the next day or so, and will head straight to an undisclosed location where he and Kate will be married. A source at the clinic explains that Pete now holds the key to staying clean: not taking drugs. “In counselling sessions he has said things that show he knows what he needs to do – stop taking drugs and seek help as soon as feels the urge to do so.”

Pete Doherty Watch: Gettin’ Hitched At His Team’s Stadium?

9/8/06, 4:56 pm EST

THE LATEST: Reports are out claiming that Pete Doherty has made inquiries into holding his wedding to Kate Moss at the West London stadium where his favorite football team, Queens Park Rangers, play. When he was a kid, Doherty apparently wrote his own lil’ football-worshiping fanzine “All Quiet On The Western Avenue” (he’s got a way with words, that kid). Various shady sources quote a Doherty pal as saying, “Pete’s first love is QPR, and holding his big day there is something which he has always thought about.” One thing though? Earlier this year the rocker disparaged his “first love” by allegedly shooting up in the VIP bathroom at the team’s stadium. Dealbreaker? If it’s true love, perhaps not.

Pete Doherty Watch: Clean, Still in Rehab, Prangin’ Out With Mike Skinner

9/5/06, 1:54 pm EST

THE LATEST: A British judge has taken pity on poor Pete and held off sentencing him for various drug related charges until the rocker has had a chance to clean up a bit more. The sentencing will now take place on December 4th, and Doherty has been instructed to stay in rehab until then, which the singer tells the BBC he can’t afford. (Guess Parlophone hasn’t sent his check over yet?)

Meanwhile, Doherty’s collaboration with Mike Skinner on a remix of The Streets’ single “Prangin’ Out” (which Skinner wrote about his cocaine problems) is now up on the rapper’s MySpace page. We’re not in love with it, but that’s us. What do you think?

Pete Doherty Watch: New Record Deal, Possible Engagement?

8/30/06, 4:02 pm EST

THE LATEST: The newest edition of US Weekly fuels the rumors that Kate Moss and Pete Doherty are really and truly engaged. But as long as the rocker is still serving his time in rehab, the piece says, there won’t be a wedding. Meanwhile, yesterday it was reported that Pete’s band Babyshambles, who were dropped from former label Rough Trade earlier this year, signed a lucrative record deal with Parlophone in the UK. Pete has such a bright future ahead of him, we know one day he will reach his full potential. We’re rooting for ya, Petey!

Pete Doherty Forms Rehab Supergroup?

8/25/06, 5:15 pm EST

pete doherty

We’re confident at least one NME editor has dreamed about this exact scenario taking place: Pete Doherty is apparently collaborating with fellow Priory Clinic rehab residents and fellow musicians Justin Hawkins and (Keane frontman) Tom Chaplin. A source tells the (notoriously sensationalistic) British tabloid The Sun that the three have been writing songs together as a means of coping with sobriety. “Pete and Justin are particularly close and Pete has invited Justin to perform with Babyshambles this weekend,” the source claims. One thing though, is Pete actually sober? It was also reported that Doherty has been caught selling drugs to teenagers in the adolescent ward at The Priory. We guess that’s not technically using … Anyway. Anyone else see The Priory Sessions: A Collection of Rarities in the ex-Libertines’ future?

Pete Doherty Watch: From Court to Rehab

8/18/06, 12:58 pm EST

THE LATEST: Today the Babyshambles frontman pled guilty to five counts of possessing drugs. On September 4th he will be sentenced and it’s possible he’ll face some jail time but for now he’s out on bail on the condition that he stay at the Priory rehabilitation clinic in London. Guess who else once stayed there? Wonder if he’ll get Kate’s old room.

Pete Doherty Watch: Arrested Again!

8/17/06, 7:44 pm EST

THE LATEST: He made it almost 60 days but in a magnificently un-surprising development, Pete was arrested once again for possession, of three different illegal substances no less (cocaine, diamorphine, and cannabis) sometime last week. Though he was only brought in and formally charged (for this most recent arrest plus several previous ones) today.

Pete Doherty Watch: Pete Sells His Implant On Ebay?

8/15/06, 1:18 pm EST

If you are one of those people that buys celebrities’ feces this would really be up your ally … if it were true. A British website reports that Pete Doherty is selling his old heroin implant on eBay. “I will give the money to pay back those who paid for my rehab,” the always benevolent singer supposedly wrote as part of the eBay listing, adding, “the rest will go to help some of my friends who are still users.” Normally we would dismiss this as complete lunacy … but we put nothing past Pete. The reader who can prove its validity gets a deluxe reissue of Depeche Mode’s Music for the Masses.
In related Pete-may-be-sober-but-he’s-still-crazy news, it seems the singer can’t get to Ibiza to play his twice-rescheduled show. The singer was on his way to Spain to perform a make-up date when he discovered that his passport was expired. A quick application for a temporary one was rejected, reportedly because Pete submitted unacceptable photos, whatever that means.

Pete Doherty and The Streets Compare Drug Escapades

8/9/06, 12:01 pm EST

Pete Doherty and Mike SkinnerWe’re not quite sure when Pete found the time to do this but Mike Skinner told the NME that Doherty is his special guest poet/spoken-wordist on a new version of Streets song “Prangin’ Out”, which Skinner wrote about his problems with cocaine abuse. “He makes my drug escapades look like schoolboy stuff … he’s written the book on excess and tabloid problems” Skinner reportedly commented, adding that he’s been trying to work with Doherty since the early Libertine days but has had a hard time tracking the guy down. “I wanted to get Pete on ‘When You Wasn’t Famous’ but that didn’t happen,” said Skinner, “He’s quite a difficult person to get hold of.” You don’t say.

Pete Doherty Watch: Pete and Kate Spotted Together

8/8/06, 3:42 pm EST

THE LATEST: Over the weekend Pete Doherty and muse/fellow poet Kate Moss were apparently spotted together at the Rhythm Festival. The source reports that the former couple were holding hands and making out in the VIP area and that Pete looked pretty healthy. Intriguing. [thanks Perez]
