Lady Gaga Brings “Bad Romance,” Sense of Humor to “Leno”

11/24/09, 10:15 am EST

Network television had a case of “Bad Romance” on two consecutive nights as Lady Gaga followed up her American Music Awards performance by bringing The Fame Monster single to the The Jay Leno Show yesterday. Donning the biggest shoulder pads this side of David Byrne, Lady Gaga and her gang of masked dancers gave fans a preview of what they can expect when The Monster Ball tour finally embarks this Friday in Montreal. To Leno’s relief, no glass was smashed during this performance of “Bad Romance.”

Following the performance, Gaga sat down with Leno to talk about playing for the Queen of England, what her music sounded like when she was in Catholic School (”My music was different in high school. I was singing about love. Things I don’t care about anymore”) and that rule that disqualifies Gaga from being nominated for the Grammy she was the favorite for. “Well, I’ve been locked out of the Best New Artist category… I was a new artist this year. But it’s fine, I wouldn’t be screwing anyone over there to have them take the award,” Gaga joked. “I’ve been nominated in the past, so technically due to songwriting and things, I’m not a new artist. But it’s OK, because the biggest reward for me has been my fans.”

Grammys Will Not Let Lady Gaga Compete for Best New Artist

Lady Gaga may have lost out to Gloriana for the Breakthrough Artist Award at last night’s American Music Awards — a loss so crushing, Gaga unleashed her anger by using a mic stand to smash a plate glass window during her AMAs performance — but there was some potential good news for The Fame Monster singer: According to EW’s Music Mix, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences was going to consider a rule change to make her eligible for the Best New Artist category at the 2010 Grammys, even though Gaga’s “Just Dance” was nominated for Best Dance Recording in 2009. Unfortunately, by this afternoon, a Grammys rep debunked EW’s report and told Rolling Stone Gaga is still ineligible for the honor.

“The awards and nominations committee meets to review the rules every year. We change the rules frequently,” Grammy President Neil Portnow told EW. “We recognize that situation is not perfect, and we are looking at ways to figure it out.” Because “Just Dance” was nominated at the 2009 Grammys, Gaga is technically ineligible to be nominated for Best New Artist, even though that single was merely the opening salvo in what has pretty much become Gaga’s breakout year. Beyonce and Lady Gaga Break Out the Big Guns for “Video Phone”

11/17/09, 9:05 am EST

Good news for those who have completely finished their shot-by-shot analysis of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video: The video for Beyoncé’s “Video Phone (Remix)” featuring Gaga, off the I Am… Sasha Fierce reissue, was unveiled last night, and like “Bad Romance,” it’s an almost seizure-inducing parade of cinematic homages and wardrobe changes. From the opening shot — a tribute to the classic slow-motion walk in Reservoir Dogs — it’s obvious that “Video Phone” is a clip even our movie critic Peter Travers could love, with references to Flashdance, Grindhouse and Marlon Brando.

Check out hot shots of Beyoncé onstage and off.

The first half of “Video Phone” finds Beyoncé dancing with camera-headed figures that look like 21st century Residents. At the 2:30 mark, a demure Lady Gaga makes her first appearance, and that’s when the gunplay with large, colorful plastic weapons begins. At times throughout the Hype Williams-directed video, it seems like Beyoncé is emulating Katy Perry — or at least Katy Perry emulating Bettie Page — and M.I.A.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the two divas also collaborated on the track “Telephone” off Gaga’s own The Fame Monster, due out November 23rd. (more…)

Sneak Peek: Lady Gaga Dances in Red Sequins on “Gossip Girl”

11/13/09, 4:43 pm EST

A quick clip of Lady Gaga’s performance on Monday’s upcoming episode of Gossip Girl just surfaced, showing the Fame Monster singer belting out her new single “Bad Romance” for a select handful of dapper rich kids at an intimate club. Dressed in a cherry red sequined gown with a 35-foot chiffon train, Gaga floats about the stage with the help of three buff back-up dancers as Gossip Girl’s Blair (Leighton Meester) looks on approvingly.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Gaga filmed her cameo for the episode — fittingly titled “The Last Days of Disco Stick” — at the Angel Orensanz Center (a New York venue that only fits 500 people, a fraction of Gaga’s normal concert audience). (more…)

Lady Gaga Premieres “Bad Romance,” Her Craziest Video Yet

11/10/09, 3:56 pm EST

Just one album into her career, Lady Gaga has established herself as someone impervious to predictions — especially in the music video department. And the video for her first Fame Monster single, “Bad Romance,” has Gaga providing fans with perhaps her craziest, brightest canvas yet. A collaboration between director Frances Lawrence and the Haus of Gaga — or in this case, the Bath House of Gaga — “Bad Romance” finds Gaga simultaneously paying homage visually to Kubrick and lyrically to Hitchcock (”I want your psycho / Your vertigo stick / Want you in my rear window”), all while dressed in some of the most outrageous outfits she’s ever worn (and that’s saying a lot). The video premiered today over at Gaga’s official site.

Lady Gaga Exclusive: Inside Her Plans for The Monster Ball Tour

10/22/09, 12:29 pm EST

It didn’t take long for Lady Gaga to recover after her Fame Kills Tour — a joint trek with Kanye West she tells Rolling Stone was going to “keep the momentum going in terms of pop music staying innovative with hip-hop and R&B” — was canceled earlier this month. Just two weeks later she announced plans for The Monster Ball, a “pop-electro opera” that launches November 27th.

Details about the trek are scarce, but after debuting new song “Bad Romance” on Saturday Night Live and shooting a video for the track that she calls “so amazing,” Gaga opened up about the tour for the first time to Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt. Grab our new issue, on stands next week for his full story, and read his exclusive Q&A with the star here:

Exactly two weeks after Lady Gaga and Kanye West’s Fame Kills Tour was canceled, The Fame singer has revealed the dates for her solo jaunt, called The Monster Ball Tour. “The Haus of Gaga had been designing ‘The Monster Ball’ for premiere in 2010 at the O2 Arena in London, but due to diligent work and preparation, ‘The Monster Ball’ will begin on November 27 in Montreal,” Gaga wrote on her official Website. ” ‘The Monster Ball’ is a multimedia artistic experience in the style of the first-ever ‘pop electro opera.’ ”

Lady Gaga Fights Madonna, Debuts “Bad Romance” on “Saturday Night Live”

10/5/09, 7:50 am EST

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera stepped up to kiss the Queen of Pop’s ring — well, Madonna herself — at the 2003 VMAs, and Lady Gaga got her chance to pay homage this weekend on Saturday Night Live. But rather than play it straight, SNL cast the two in a mock catfight that pit Gaga (the night’s musical guest) against Madge (in town promoting best-of collection Celebration). It all went down during a “Deep House Dish” sketch when DJ Dynasty Handbag (Kenan Thompson) announced “two exciting entertainers, performing together for the very first time.” The pair of slight blond stars spun around and while Gaga nailed her first lyric — “What’s wrong, Madonna, can’t get into the groove?” — Madonna seemed to blank on her lines, recovering in time to try to yank Gaga’s hair. “What the hell is a disco stick!?” Madonna shouted as the two struggled.

When their mock scuffle moved to the couch, Gaga said, “Hey, guess what Madonna, I’m totally hotter than you” to which Madonna retorted, “What kind of name is Lady Gaga, it sounds like baby food.” Touché. The horrified look on T’Shane (Andy Samberg)’s face said it all: WTF. Like many SNL sketches, there was no clear road out of this bizarre scenario, so Thompson suggested the two kiss and make up.

Is Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” Bound for “SNL”? New Track Hits the Web

10/2/09, 2:52 pm EST

Bummed out that the “Fame Kills” tour was canceled? This new song by Lady Gaga should help soften the blow. “Bad Romance” is rumored to be among the new songs on Gaga’s Fame Monster reissue out November 24th, and the front-running candidate to be that new song the Hot Diva has promised to perform when she serves as musical guest on tomorrow night’s Saturday Night Live. (Thanks to ONTD for the clip above.) Gaga acknowledged the tune with a tweet today that reads, “Leaked next single is makin my ears bleed. Wait till you hear the real version ;)

Check out Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.

“Bad Romance” was produced by RedOne, who also is credited on Gaga’s previous singles “Just Dance,” “LoveGame” and “Poker Face” (and is doing work on Adam Lambert’s anticipated debut). This new single doesn’t deviate far from the blueprint mapped out by those other hits, especially “Poker Face,” to which “Bad Romance” bears a striking resemblance. Lyrically, the track has Gaga exploring the joys of a bad romance, while the misplaced bridge takes a detour to talk about fashion. (more…)

Lady Gaga, Kanye West’s “Fame Kills” Tour Killed By Poor Sales?

10/2/09, 9:12 am EST

Speculation as to why Lady Gaga and Kanye West’s “Fame Kills” tour was killed has begun, and TMZ has already shot out a few theories that start with sluggish early numbers. Ticket sales “sucked,” to point where ” ’sucked’ happens to be a nicer version of the word,” TMZ writes, adding Gaga’s and West’s people were allegedly “at each others throats like their last names were Gosselin” and that Gaga reportedly wanted to bring The Fame Monster and her steady rotation of outrageous outfits to smaller venues than the hockey arenas the tour planned on playing. The official word from Lady Gaga, though, is it was a “mutual decision,” Billboard reports. Gaga said West is going to take time off, and she’ll be embarking on a solo jaunt in several weeks.

Considering Kanye’s “Glow in the Dark” tour was sold out and Gaga’s star is on the rise, it’s hard to believe ticket sales were that poor. However, in the case of the “Fame Kills” stop at New York’s Nassau Coliseum, plenty of general admission tickets were still available hours after they went on presale. In fact, Ticketmaster’s listing for the Nassau Coliseum show is still active, and GA tickets are widely available. (more…)

Kanye West and Lady Gaga “Fame Kills” Tour Canceled

Just two weeks after Kanye West and Lady Gaga announced their full slate of “Fame Kills” dates, the tour has been canceled. No official reason has been given for the cancellation, but ticket refunds will be available.

After the backlash surrounding Kanye’s outburst during Taylor Swift’s VMAs acceptance speech, the tour was rumored to be embattled. Now official confirmation of the cancellation comes from concert promoters Live Nation.

But Gaga isn’t letting this slow down her collaborations with rappers. Just yesterday, she hinted at the possibility of recording with Dr. Dre.
