Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace: Winners Announced Tomorrow!

12/21/06, 3:12 pm EST

MySpace, Rolling StoneWe’ve made our list, we’re checking it twice and tomorrow we’ll finally reveal our picks for the 25 Best Bands on MySpace. It’s taken countless hours of buffering, listening and deliberation, but we think our list makes it all worth it. Just because this is the end of the contest, that doesn’t mean our MySpace page is going away. It will still be a forum for you — our new friends — to get breaking music news, talk and meet other RS fans, harass us to listen to your band and get exclusive RS content. Will we host more contests? Well, should we? So stop by, talk back to us, be our friend, join the party. As for our 25 Best Bands on MySpace contest, any predictions for tomorrow?

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace: Where Was All the Non-Rock?

12/20/06, 4:56 pm EST

MySpace, Rolling StoneOn Friday, all the time spent waiting for those MySpace tracks to buffer finally pays off when we list our Top 25 Bands on MySpace. We can’t reiterate enough how much great music we heard, but one question: Where was the hip-hop, the R&B, the DJs doing Girl Talk-esque things, the blues, electronica, etc, etc. Al these genres were underrepresented. With Clipse and Ghostface among our favorites, we were really looking forward to some next wave of rap to keep us afloat through New Year’s. Yes, this contest is still closed, but let the fact that we’re having this conversation suggest there will be others. While we finalize our Top 25 (Rock) Bands on MySpace list, clue us in to the non-rock acts we have to look forward to.

Oh, and to explore the tracks we thought were cool last week go here. Remember: We’ll name the Top 25 on Friday!

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace: Who Did We Forget?

12/19/06, 3:18 pm EST

Rolling StoneOn Friday, we finally announce our Top 25 Bands on MySpace list. Just because we named 25 bands last week, there’s no telling how many of those bands will carry over to the final list. Throughout this contest, the fans have given us fire. Whether it was your support of acts we didn’t yet name or bands we hadn’t yet heard, you guys have been great. So we’re all ears again. We want you to tell us which bands (that we haven’t recognized already!) should be on the Top 25 list. You harassed us with MySpace messages and spammed us with misplaced blog comments. Here is the forum to say your peace. Tell us who we should consider in the final hours before we make our decision. You can help turn the tide. Get to work!

>> Check out songs we thought were cool last week. Like we say, no telling if any or all will make the Top 25.

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Contest Is Closed!

12/18/06, 1:03 pm EST

Rolling StoneWith approximately 1700 songs, a string of 24-hour listening binges, and a stream of four-letter words for the buffering time of the MySpace music players, the Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace contest has officially closed to new entries. Thanks to all the bands that submitted tracks and all the fans that came out to support their favorites. MySpace seems to have lived up to its potential as a breeding ground for breaking new music. We’re going to spend the next few days reviewing songs and debating which artists will make our Top 25 Bands on MySpace list, which we’ll reveal this Friday, December 22nd. Until then, this is an open space for last-minute lobbying for your favorite artists.

>> Check out songs we thought were cool last week. No telling if any or all will make the Top 25.

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Final Round!

12/15/06, 5:37 pm EST

Rolling StoneGood job! You guys have given us a veritable shitload of awesome bands to consider for our Best Bands On MySpace contest. Today marks the last day in which we will be posting the one’s we’ve liked best so far on Rock Daily, but there’s still plenty of time to get your pet band a nomination. As we type, a collection of sweatshop workers/interns (programmed with impeccable taste in music) are chained to desks in our basement tirelessly waiting for your favorite band’s MySpace pages to load. They will be locked up all weekend, pouring over your submissions (remember, you can only nominate via our MySpace page - nominations posted in the comments section will not be considered) and when we come in Monday morning we’ll set them free, officially terminating the nomination period. So, you know, go nominate some cool bands over the weekend, k? In the meantime, here are today’s pics for the five of the best bands you nominated since yesterday:

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round Four

Your comments help us decide which of the five bands rocks the most (but you can’t nominate new bands for consideration in the comments section). Check out the full rules after the jump, but more importantly, listen to these band’s songs and let us know what you think.

That way we get to hear if we’re onto something, or totally insane for liking what we’re hearing with these groups. You can read the full rules after the jump, but in the meantime let’s get to today’s picks.

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round Two

12/12/06, 6:06 pm EST

Rolling StoneWe have spent a LOT of time on MySpace in the last 24 hours. Now that we’ve promised to check out every band you nominate for our Best Bands on MySpace contest, we have to actually check out every band you nominate. Just to be clear: That means we REALLY notice if the same person nominates the same band 400 times. We notice, then we toss that band out of the running. So please don’t do that. (Full list of rules after the jump).

Anyway, today we present you with five more awesome nominees from the vast MySpace pool. Tell us what you think in our comments section, but if you want to recommend a band, remember that we’re only accepting submissions via our MySpace page. Talk here. Nominate there. Cool?

Today’s special nominees, in no particular order:

  • Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears - “The Ceiling on the Wall”: www.myspace.com/bryanscary
  • An Pierle & White Velvet - “How Does It Feel”: www.myspace.com/anpierleandwhitevelvet

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round One

12/11/06, 5:49 pm EST

Rolling StoneAs we told you earlier today, we are hosting our first ever Best Bands On MySpace contest. We’ve received tons of nominations on our MySpace page (which is the ONLY place you can suggest contenders) and there are more coming in every minute. Below you’ll see our list of the first five contestants that caught our attention. Tell us what you think, and remember, we want to hear your opinions here on Rock Daily, but in order to nominate your brother’s friend’s buddy’s band who so totally rock, you’ve gotta follow the rules (which appear, in entirety, after the jump) and do so ONLY ONCE on MySpace. Sitting in front of your TV and suggesting the same band over and over will not get you on our cover. In fact, it will get you disqualified. Just FYI.

Today’s special nominees, in no particular order:

  • Night Driving in Small Towns - “Close Encounters”: www.myspace.com/nightdrivinginsmalltowns
  • Tempo No Tempo - “Static”: www.myspace.com/temponotempo
  • Shannon Hurley - “Sunrise”: www.myspace.com/shannonhurley
  • B.O.S.C.H. - “Mehr”: www.myspace.com/boschmusic
  • Astro Junkie - “Don’t Say Another Word”: www.myspace.com/astrojunkieatl

Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace, 2006

12/11/06, 8:44 am EST

Perhaps you’ve heard that we — like Jarvis Cocker, Scott Weiland, and Tila Tequila — have a MySpace page. Many of you have been sending us links to your pages, asking us to check out your bands and make you famous. So far we’ve ignored you, but that is all about to change. Starting today, we’ll be listening. You point us in the direction of ONE song by your band (or your favorite band) on MySpace and we will go check it out. Over the next week, we’ll be featuring our favorites here, whereupon all of you can tell us how wrong (or right) we are for selecting the band in question. Then, on December 22nd, after taking all the submissions and general debate under consideration, we’ll announce our picks for the Top 25 Best Bands On MySpace. Check out the full set of rules and regulations after the jump.
