Ask A Rock Star: What’s Your Favorite Children’s Book or Movie?

6/25/07, 11:21 am EST

Yes, even those dudes from Mastodon read Shel Silverstein books once.

The Bravery frontman Sam Endicott:The Sandlot. It’s what every suburban kid dreams their life would be. Also it features the most brilliant move in the history of cinema, which is when the guy pretends to be drowning in order to kiss the hot lifeguard.”

Mastodon frontman Troy Sanders: “To this day, my favorite books are any and all things by Shel Silverstein. Truth, beauty and innocent cleverness shine with bright and wholesome purity. These are all classic. These are all amazing!” (more…)

Ask a Rock Star: The Strokes, Andrew Bird, The Pierces Vent on the “Sopranos” Finale

6/12/07, 5:28 pm EST

On Sunday night, the final episode of “The Sopranos” aired on HBO, prompting both rave reviews and frothy-mouthed vitriol from fans who wanted to see the series end with Tony getting clipped – or at least with something more satisfying than an ambiguous diner scene set to a Journey hit. We asked everyone from Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes to singer-songwriter-violinist Andrew Bird what they thought of the show.

Albert Hammond, Jr.: “If you can believe it, last night was my first episode. I thought it was amazing. Now all I have to do is go back and watch the series from the beginning.” (more…)

Ask A Rock Star: Will You Get An iPhone?

6/11/07, 5:13 pm EST

Gabe Saporta Patrick Stump Adrian Young

Later this month Apple will release it’s latest nifty gadget, the iPhone. We asked everyone from No Doubt’s Adrian Young to Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship if they’re planning to buy one.

  • Adrian Young: “I really want one, but I just got the newest BlackBerry. After five hundred bucks, it feels kind of stupid to drop another five hundred bucks on a phone when I already have everything I already need. My guess is that there may be a couple of glitches in that first generation, so maybe I’ll get the second generation, once they get it right.”
  • Gabe Saporta: “Fuck that, that looks so stupid, dude. The reason you see everyone using the Sidekick is because it has a big-ass keyboard. How are you gonna type on an iPhone? It’s not gonna work, bro, the touch screen is gonna suck. It’s gonna be a lot of fun, but it’s gonna be a big toy. If you wanna do email, it’s not gonna be good for it — you need to have buttons, you can’t just use a touch screen because your fingers will miss the keys. But I mean, I’ll try it out — I’m not gonna judge it until I try it out.”
  • Cobra Starship guitarist Ryland Blackinton: “BlackBerry for life, you know what I’m saying? I use a Mach3 razor. I use Old Spice deodorant. And I use a BlackBerry and I’m never changing. I just got one in January, and I’ve never had e-mail in my hands. All my young kids will make fun of me when I’m older, but I don’t care. I’ll be the most efficient, best-smelling, cleanest shorn brother.”
  • Fall Out Boy vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump: “I’m waiting for them to make an Apple Rotary Phone. I’m holding out, so I’m not getting an Apple phone until I see that.”

Ask A Rock Star: What’s Going to Happen on The Sopranos Series Finale?

6/4/07, 6:32 pm EST

Mike D

  • Adam Levine of Maroon 5: “Doesn’t there need to be some big apocalyptic something? With that show, everything’s been this slow crawl towards the demise of the family. So someone’s going to die, and it’s probably going to be Tony. If that TV show knows what it’s doing, it will have one of the main characters betray him. Maybe his wife. That would be pretty massive. I’d better start talking to them about this…”
  • Mike D of the Beastie Boys: “Both the Adams from my band watch it, but I don’t. I was too late on the whole thing. I see a couple of guys from the show in the neighborhood with their kids, so I’ve lost my whole impression of them as bad guys.”
  • Denis Leary [Honorary Rock Star]: “It’s my favorite show of all time. It created the golden age of TV drama as we know it. If I was writing the show I’d want Carmella to shoot Tony – or not shoot Tony but have been involved in his demise or his survival at gunpoint. There’s no where else to go with that relationship.”

Ask A Rock Star: Did Paris Hilton Get Off Easy?

5/29/07, 4:50 pm EST

Paris

This week: Lily Allen, Fall Out Boy, Jordin Sparks and others weigh in on whether Paris should go to jail.
Perhaps you’ve head that Paris Hilton is going to jail. A judge ordered the heiress to serve jail time after she was busted driving with a suspended license. The starlet’s license was originally suspended after she was arrested for speeding through L.A. streets while under the influence, in a hurry to get some food into her perfectly tanned belly to soak up all that alcohol. Paris and her ensuing stint in jail have become a major topic of conversation among … everybody. Is she finally getting what she deserves or is her punishment too harsh? We decided to ask a few of the people we interviewed last week what they thought. Here are their answers.
