White Stripes Threaten “Strong Action” Over Air Force’s “Fell in Love With a Girl” Super Bowl Ad

The White Stripes and their management have accused the Air Force Reserve of swiping “Fell in Love with a Girl” for a recruitment commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. “We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management,” the band writes in a statement on their official Website. “We have not licensed this song to the Air Force Reserve and we plan to take strong action to stop the ad containing this music.” Watch the offending commercial on the Air Force Reserve site. UPDATE: The video and page housing it have both been pulled from the Air Force Reserve site and the songwriter has responded to the band’s complaint.

A short history of rock stars in Super Bowl ads.

A comparison of the White Blood Cells single and the Air Force Reserve commercial reveals that the music is nearly exactly the same, with Jack White’s guitar riffs firmly intact and another guitar replicating the cadence of the original vocal medley. The commercial initially seems like an X Games ad until three fighter jets fly into frame during its final seconds. The “Grab Some Air” recruitment spot “features the high-octane thrills of action sports at its best. This is sure to capture the interest of even the most enthusiastic sports fan,” the Air Force Reserve site writes while listing two-dozen television markets where the ad will air. The Air Force Reserve makes no mention of the White Stripes.

“The White Stripes takes strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserves presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war we do not support,” the Stripes write. “The White Stripes support this nation’s military, at home and during times when our country needs and depends on them. We simply don’t want to be a cog in the wheel of the current conflict, and hope for a safe and speedy return home for our troops.”

The “Fell in Love with a Girl” saga is the latest chapter in a long history of rockers lashing out against government officials and agencies for using their music without permission. As Rolling Stone reported last week, Joe Walsh engaged in a battle of open letters against a politician also named Joe Walsh after the rep re-recorded Walsh’s James Gang track “Walk Away” for a campaign video. That video has since be taken off YouTube “due to a copyright claim by Joe Walsh,” though it’s unclear which Walsh had it removed.

…”sure to capture the interest of even the most enthusiastic sports fan”. Even the most enthusiastic ones, really? This sounds like it was written by a military type.

huh | 2/9/2010, 10:25 am EST

it looks like the air force has taken down the commercial

rock isn't dead pop is | 2/9/2010, 10:29 am EST

Jack’s gonna fight Seven Nation Army again. You go, Jack!

AF ONE | 2/9/2010, 10:33 am EST

At least they support the troops. I guess I can understand their point about the war…everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am active duty in the Air Force, and a huge White Stripes fan. I am glad they didn’t bash the military.

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 10:39 am EST

What’s with all the song-stealing by politicians/military organizations lately?

Is it cheaper to steal a song, and pay damages later, than to ask permission and pay legitimately beforehand?

well done jack white | 2/9/2010, 10:59 am EST

air force sucks

Dr. Mabuse | 2/9/2010, 11:02 am EST

Ah, Jack, the freedom to speak your mind.

How do you think you got that freedom?

stephen | 2/9/2010, 11:08 am EST

the AF did that on purpose to cause a fuzz and to get people to click on their site.

moderate | 2/9/2010, 11:34 am EST

Dr. Mabuse,
U R suggesting that the white stripes should give their song to the AF because the air force gave them freedom? first of all, how free is that? and second, the only foreign war ever fought on this soil happened before the wright bros, my man!

heathen2002 | 2/9/2010, 12:07 pm EST

I love how the air force uses these cool “sci-fi” ads that look like something out of battlestar galactica to appeal to the young and naive. Anything to recruit right? And the truth is far from glamorous…

michael | 2/9/2010, 12:33 pm EST

little wayne is the man

A | 2/9/2010, 1:05 pm EST

Anyone that has any respect for artists and their music would support the White Stripes in this… It has nothing to do with “they done got us our freedom!” It has to do with artist respect and music copyright laws, which are being abused horribly as it is. For the government to do it… I mean come on.

offside | 2/9/2010, 1:21 pm EST

Blah, blah, blah friggin’ blah. They both got more press out of this than they deserve.

there goes the government breaking their own laws again

Virginian | 2/9/2010, 2:20 pm EST

I Love the White Stripes but how do they support the troops? If they truly supported our troops they would give them some free entertainment.

I support the White Stripes but I like to see the White Stripes live up to their words!

By the way, you can’t say you support our soldiers and not support the war.

Jack, I love ya man but don’t go round saying you support our troops when you don’t.

Sorry the Air Force likes supports Jack and his sister but they no support them!

So sad…..

teeroyal | 2/9/2010, 2:21 pm EST

Dr. Mabuse,
Neither the White Stripes nor anyone else “got the freedom to speak (their) mind” through air force or other US military mercinary missions around the world. Rather, Jack & Meg are now likely US government targets as “terrorist sympathizers” because they excersized their freedom to speak outside the boundaries of a free speech zone. Would you like Freedom Fries with that?

Virginian | 2/9/2010, 2:24 pm EST

“well done jack white”

To the person who says the Air Force sucks, it is because of them you are able to not only say ignorant things
but have the right to stay ignorant.

While brave women either your age or worse, younger, are putting their lives on the lines everyday so you can play your video games and pop the pus out your pimples.

Too bad your parents did not produce such hero’s like their families did!

Coastie Joe | 2/9/2010, 2:24 pm EST

….dares you to do something bigger than yourself today. Move away from you hipster ‘hood and make a difference for your community. Commenting on RS doesn’t count.

Virginian | 2/9/2010, 2:27 pm EST

teeroyal

You aren’t bright, its those soldiers past and present that fought and won so you too can be ignorant. Do you think we would be a nation much less a free one without the Armed Forces from 1776 till 2010? You either need to get an education or move out of my beloved country

Virginian | 2/9/2010, 2:28 pm EST

Good Luck suing the Air Force! Lol

Jungleland2 | 2/9/2010, 2:33 pm EST

There are thousands and thousands of musicians and songwriters who would be honored to have their song used in an Air Force Reserve ad. Why not let one of them write a song that has a “Gen X feel”

popbottle | 2/9/2010, 2:33 pm EST

Dr. Mabuse, allow me to answer your question…

The Constitution, you damn mouth-breather.

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 2:38 pm EST

‘You either need to get an education or move out of my beloved country.’

Screw you, Virginian. Ignorance is a right of every American citizen.

popbottle | 2/9/2010, 2:42 pm EST

Virginian, could you please explain why you are conflating soliders and conflict? Are you suggesting that because I don’t support Walmart, that I don’t support the American workforce?

And besides, this is about copyright law and the Air Forces flagrent abuse of said law, not some nationalistic BS.

Astro | 2/9/2010, 2:44 pm EST

“Ignorance is a right of every American citizen.”

And “Virginian” just proves it…

Tanya | 2/9/2010, 2:45 pm EST

So the song may or may not have been ‘ripped off’. Jack White can say what he likes, because he lives in a free country-which includes the freedom of speech. Something that our past and present military-which includes the air force-has fought for.
If the White Stripes were genuinely upset that someone was ‘ripping off’ their song, wouldn’t they already have filed a lawsuit…or is a press release and numerous interviews necessary every time you sue someone for ‘ripping you off’? Stop flapping your lips and do what you think is right-and get off your soapbox.

marks | 2/9/2010, 2:47 pm EST

Virginian,
This is stealing. After folks gets caught stealing they can’t turn around and suggest that it’s okay because they should have got the stuff they stole for free anyway. If the air force wanted the song, they should have asked and let the band decide whether this is how they would like to show their support for the troops.

UpgrayeDD | 2/9/2010, 2:50 pm EST

By the way, you CAN say you support the troops and not support the war. Although, anything I say to show how that can be true won’t mean a thing to a Virginian anyway.

Maybe the Air Force can just claim Eminent Domain on the Stripes’ intellectual property. Problem solved, eh?

Ahh | 2/9/2010, 2:56 pm EST

You say you can’t be against the war and support the troops at the same time? Of course you can!

Your way of thinking is what got this great country stuck in a needless war in Iraq in the first place.

I may think the war was needless, but I can still be thankful, supportive and sorry for the US men and women stuck fighting because everyone was too afraid of being considered un-american if they questioned what the hell was happening.

Michael | 2/9/2010, 3:02 pm EST

I, for one, find Virginian’s comments hilarious! Must be one of those ‘real Americans(tm)’ that Sarah Palin was referring to.

Payton | 2/9/2010, 3:15 pm EST

I cant wait for their new album.

Tanya | 2/9/2010, 3:16 pm EST

AND…is it at all possible that they didn’t ‘rip off’ the song? Personally, I don’t like the White Stripes, so I have never heard the song before. It can’t be an unheard of possibility that people have played the same guitar riffs-and called it their own.

Deirdre | 2/9/2010, 3:21 pm EST

Jack White takes on the U.S. Air Force! Go, Jack! :) )

I guess this is how Mr. White got a reputation for being a lil’ bit combative — he just doesn’t put up with crap from anyone. Even when they’re waving their guns and tanks and cannons, he comes out swinging. Ya just gotta love it. I know I do, anyway.

I’m also glad that he/they put in a good word for our military troops. Caring and reasonable people can have different opinions on any given war or conflict, but anyone who thinks that we could be free and secure without a strong military is just nuts.

Those who are looking to see the now-missing Air Force ad, I watched it last night on youtube; it might still be there, I don’t have a link now. I can see why somebody wanted to rip off the song though, because it is such a high-energy, feel-good song. I’m a big fan of all of Jack White’s music and bands, but there’s still nothing else quite as awesome as The White Stripes.

skadi09 | 2/9/2010, 3:28 pm EST

Dr. Mabuse, by selling records sir, by selling records

Deirdre | 2/9/2010, 3:42 pm EST

Dr. Mabuse – I imagine that Jack White is well aware that a strong military was and always will be essential to securing and maintaining our freedom and our security. At least, I assume that’s why he said this:

“The White Stripes support this nation’s military, at home and during times when our country needs and depends on them.”

So maybe he’s not so clueless after all, eh? ;)

(Sorry, I keep saying “he” when the statement was made on behalf of The White Stripes, both of them. But as we all know, Meg does not actually speak. Hence the subtitles for her parts in their new documentary film “Under Great White Northern Lights.”)

kirk | 2/9/2010, 3:48 pm EST

pretentious douchebag rockstar.

Mark | 2/9/2010, 4:05 pm EST

Okay, enough already. I read something back there like “It’s your right to be an idiot / so move out of my country” and laughed my ass off, because, well, please.

Here’s the real argument. Prior to the US passing the new RIAA-inspired BS, this wouldn’t've been an issue, because any NON-COMMERCIAL USE of PRE-RECORDED MATERIAL was allowed. Next, Intellectual Property Laws were passed, where previously NON-COMMERCIAL USE OF RE-RECORDINGS fell under ARTISTIC LICENSE. Clearly, the Air Force is a non-commercial entity, however, it’s all moot thanks to One-World Legislation during the Clinton Years. Can Jack sue? Yes, he can. He doesn’t HAVE to, of course, but has the unfortunate right to be a dick.

None of this is illegal, mind you. It used to be, but anymore, it’s simply a matter for a Civil Law case. And a ridiculous one at that.

Military Ads? Non-commercial. Political Campaigning? Clearly commercial. The is a completely different issue than where Joe Walsh or Jackson Browne lit into people. So once you start looking at facts about Copyright “Laws” (which aren’t laws — they merely give people the right to sue), you realize, in this case, it’s a little more politically motivated.

So, I say, since he wants to bring Politics into it, I certainly hope that he goes ahead and ads Barack Obama to the lawsuit, since he *is* Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force. You know — kinda make him responsible for every single thing that happens under his command — kinda like people did the last guy? ;-)

P-mac | 2/9/2010, 4:05 pm EST

I believe all these comments should be deleted, because of how ‘off-topic’ they are. This has nothing to do with military. This is about copywrite laws and recooping what is rightfully yours! No one should ever use something that isn’t legally theirs and profit from it. The US Military are the englourious Basterds of the world!

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 4:09 pm EST

why don’t we just call the troops what they are: baby killers!!! being the tool of an imperialist regime doesn’t make you intelligent or sensitive to anyone’s rights no matter how you might want to put a spin on it. denouncing everyone who disagrees with them as unpatriotic and a terrorist (or at best ungrateful for all the baby killing they’ve done over the last million years) is pretty sad and shows how little human rights soldiers actually have respect for. We don’t need your “protection” or your holier than thouness charlatans!! every conflict you claim to be saving us from was in fact started up by the yankee secret service in order for the yankee string pullers to profit financially or build a pipeline. If you think the regime cares about freedom for anybody including yourself you are out of your hootenany!!! God bless America!!! You don’t respect the rights of others to claim what you yourself enjoy!!!! For that the rest of the world spits on you (you have killed their children for decades without provocation – who starts a fight with the united states of america???)! and that is why you will be forever at war. You don’t care about anyone but yourselves!!! may allah throw you virgins in heaven … and may they have nothing to do with you! If this were ancient Greece the women would stop sleeping with their husbands until the war was over and done with. It’d be over in three weeks. wouldn’t that be cool? Make love not war -that’s the only thing that ultimately will keep us alive here. “The world will know peace when the power of love is greater than the love of power.” -Jimi hendrix until then there is going to be a whole lot of scrapping going on- financed by the injustice league who destroyed your economy because lying and cheating is part of their game and if they can get you to kill for them in the name of freedom … risking your own life in the process then i truly feel sorry for you and send you a boatload a pity! love you lads!!!! too much to agree with you!!!!

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 4:13 pm EST

hey kirk – you’re the douchebag! if you can’t respect jack’s intellectual property then i guess you don’t care for rights and freedoms after all – get out of the cave man!!! it’s warm out here!!!

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 4:16 pm EST

guys “wake-ie wake-ie” – as any ex cia man will tell you the purpose of the american military is to protect the commercial interests of the united states -not protect rights and freedoms!!!! (other than the right to steal money and territory from other people that is) Gangsters!!! that’s all they are! with a s#itty pension and medical plan to boot!!!

Anonymous | 2/9/2010, 4:17 pm EST

in that sense the military is very much a commercial organization!

intolerance | 2/9/2010, 4:55 pm EST

“You lie, cheat and steal. I will not tolerate you.”

Perhaps the those in the military responsible for this piracy of intellectual property should consider their own supposed values.

Black Hole Sun | 2/9/2010, 6:02 pm EST

They used a White Stripes song without asking the band for permission. Therefore the band has every right to complain, because it doesn’t matter what company/organization it is, they are not entitled to infringe on the rights of the artist. So spare me the “Jack White doesn’t appreciate his freedom” bullshit. Shove your blind patriotism where it belongs and go look something called “intellectual property”. Not even the US Air Force is above the law.

Hello McFly | 2/9/2010, 6:53 pm EST

Geraldeen Bixley | 2/10/2010, 9:51 am EST

Despite your own personal outlook stealing is stealing and it is wrong. Don’t try to justify it.
Why should they let anyone push them around?
Some people fail to realize how much hard work, time and crafting it takes to make a song especially such a good one. To have it taken from you with no warning or permission is inexcusable.
May as well steal grandma’s knitted shawl while you’re at it.
And come on, when you think military, do you think White Stripes? Uh, no. I’m sure there are plenty of bands out there willing to donate their songs for that purpose. Call up U2 or something.
I’m surprised the Air Force thought they could get away with it.

bowieno | 2/10/2010, 10:39 am EST

I got the best solution– don’t watch TV. It makes you into a vegtABLE CONTROLED BY THE MARKET FORCES. THE AMOUNT MONEY SPENT ON ADVERTISING IN THIS PUTRID COUNTRY COULD BUILD BUILD A THOUSAND HATIS. STOP WATCHING TV–VIDIOTS!

Anonymous | 2/10/2010, 12:09 pm EST

Kudos to Jack for calling them out-their response is just typical old school blamethrowing to the ad agency and the ad agency to the hired “artist” who “wrote” the piece.
Always easier to apologise instead of asking permission.
Why don’t some of you who think it was Ok to take from someone what is lawfully theirs start a movement to get as many artists and musicians to donate their works to the “war” effort…after all, it would be such an honor to support it and it needs to be paid for somehow.
As if enough money hasn’t been wasted yet, we need to spend on TV ads? Stuff it asswipes.

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. An important thing to note is that a subcontractor hired by the Air Force Reserves composed the music. Fast Forward music should be getting the criticism, not the AFR.

Half of you guys are retarded and the other half knows whats going on (sorta). The White Stripes had there music used to try to recruit troops to a war they don’t support. That is illegal and they have every right to pursue legal action. I support the troops but I don’t support the Iraq war. I believe this is the political view of Jack and Meg White. Point is that most of you need to stfu about the government being evil and that shit. There not. Without them you’d be dead or sucking off some Russian for 3 dollars a week.

Virginian and ThinkBigPicture know that our first amendment rights and real patriotism come from supporting the invasion of Iraq and continued occupation of Afghanistan. If we didn’t invade Iraq just think of the danger the United States would be in right now! Iraq was just about to invade California. Be a patriot, support invading countries around the world.
