Hear Johnny Cash’s “Ain’t No Grave” From “American VI”

2/9/10, 1:02 pm EST

“There ain’t no grave/Can hold my body down,” Johnny Cash sings on the title track of his final album, the sixth in his American Recordings series with Rick Rubin. The disc, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, will arrive on February 26th, what would have been Cash’s 78th birthday. As Rolling Stone reported, Scott and Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers play on the LP, along with Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, Smokey Hormel, Matt Sweeney and Jonny Polonsky. Producer Rubin explained the album was completed while Cash was in poor health, in between trips to the hospital and during the time Cash was mourning the loss of his beloved wife, June Carter Cash. But despite the hardships, Cash was defiant. “He didn’t really have fear and he already was dealing with pain,” Rubin said. “I think he had acceptance. When he knew he was going to die, he was calm and matter of fact about it, and … that was it.”

Check out classic photos of Johnny Cash.

Rubin took Rolling Stone through American VI track by track in our next issue, on stands February 17th. Pick up a copy then for the full story, and hear “Ain’t No Grave” here now:

Great song. He died too young. I wish him and June could have given us 10 more years. One of my regrets is never seeing him in concert. Would have been unbelievable.

Badass. It’s great to see that one of the greatest partnerships in the history of recorded music, Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin, has yielded one more album for all of us to appreciate. Can’t wait to own it.

wavydave | 2/10/2010, 3:09 pm EST

Wow! I was surprised how strong his voice was, considering how ill he was at the time of recording. Hope the rest of the material is as good.

RIP Johnny.

I loved Johnny Cash. I saw him only a couple of months before his death–saw him at the fold, and he sure had a lot of determination. I am so happy this album is being released. I sure do miss Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. That’s why I go see Willie and Kristofferson every chance I get. I love those guys too. Johnny sounds better on this song than I would have expected actually.

Espetacular… Como é bom ouvir a voz do Homem de Preto novamente após tantos anos

God's Outlaw | 2/11/2010, 4:18 pm EST

Chilling. Once again, a true Cash classic.

I’ve loved Johnny Cash’s music since back in the 60’s—There is so much I could say about him but I won’t take up to much space. This is an awesome song, I loved most of them, however if I had to pick my 2 favorites, they would be This Old Flag and his rendition of Ghost Riders In The Sky. The back-up music in Riders is just great stuff. He wore black for the down trodden.

DORF | 2/14/2010, 9:30 pm EST

Excellent tune!! Can’t wait until Feb 26!!

@zaynjones | 2/15/2010, 2:25 pm EST

New Johnny AND new (kinda) Stooges? It’s shaping up to be a sweet year.

jed | 2/16/2010, 10:29 pm EST

this is great. I was afraid Rubin was going to put out an album of so-so leftovers, but this shows I had should have had more faith.
Looking forward to the full album

Sander | 2/17/2010, 10:01 am EST

Damn. That sounds so badass. I thought this would turn like a collection of leftovers just as jed said. But this sounds real cool. Love the banjo! (I guess it’s one?)

202_d | 2/18/2010, 2:58 pm EST

I’m curious if he was the one to add the sound effects. Sounds like he was modding his style. Like a industrial-country mix (A little Reznor influence…kinda cool.) …And his voice is incredible in this one; he sounds pretty strong.

timmy | 2/18/2010, 4:25 pm EST

This is Cash; it’s songs like these, his last songs, that should define him. I’ve never heard a more real voice.

Daniel Hurd | 2/20/2010, 12:26 am EST

he still delivered a song with such conviction right up until the end.. Very bitter sweet. Awesome material.. Probably the best of all the American Recordings.

Brent R. Boyte | 2/23/2010, 9:38 pm EST

It is really amazing that 7 years after his death he has another album coming out. I am really impressed by this album. His bass baritone voice is clearly weakened and it can be heard but it is still the fully recognizable voice of the Man In Black. Thanks Johnny,I would have given anything to meet you.

andy | 2/23/2010, 10:07 pm EST

i love thi album its a great one and jhonny cash will always live in my haert and in the hearts of others we love jhonny!

The Enemy Below | 2/24/2010, 6:01 pm EST

Ironically, about the same time that Cash’s last album is being released,USA Today ran an article
about such”Hat Acts”like Trace Adkins under the banner”Ladies Don’t Love Country Boys”.

Damn!!Evrerytime I see a”Hat Act”Prettyboy like Kenny Chesney or Tim McGraw or Trace Adkins trying to act all badass or hear their crappy”Chicken Fried Hallmark Card”songs, the more I want to listen to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard!!!

Trace Adkins’”Ladies Love Country Boys”is just one of those schlock
songs about how a high class woman suddenly falls for a good ol’boy in
a monster truck!!!

Right!!!Sure, once in a great while it happens-Sandra Bullock and Jesse James for example-but for the most part it doesn’t!!!

Johnny Cash on the other hand sang songs about the dark side of life
and wasn’t afraid to tackle controversial issues!!!

Johnny was truly an American Original!!!
Adkins;Chesney;Mc Graw;etal.,are just interchangeable hat acts!!!

“Honky Tonk A Donkadonk”???PUHLEASE!!!
“Lad ies Love Country Boys”???
YA GOTTA BE SHYTTING ME!!

Sorry Trace, but”Understand Your Man”;”Don’t Take Your Guns To Town”;”Ring Of Fire”;”Hurt”;”Man In Black”and”God’s Gonna Cut You Down”are timeless!!

Sorry Trace;Tim;Kenny;etal.!!
But until you have the cojones enough to tell the suits in NashVegas to kiss off and record
some real country,you’ll never be
Real Country Singers!!!

“She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy”??
You Need Help!!!

bob accordion country | 2/25/2010, 7:28 pm EST

WOW Johnny Cash,the greatest of all.R I P J.C.
