Weekend Rock List: Aerosmith’s Replacement Singer

11/13/09, 5:57 pm EST

While Aerosmith insist they aren’t breaking up, guitarist Joe Perry told Rolling Stone they’re still considering recording and touring with another singer if Steven Tyler follows through with his desired two-year break from the band. While it would be virtually impossible to replace Tyler in Aerosmith (that voice! those moves! those lips!), we’re betting there are countless vocalists out there who would love to try. We posed this question to the readers when Scott Weiland split with Velvet Revolver, so we’ll ask again: Who should be the lead singer in the refurbished Aerosmith? Leave your suggestions in the comments, and on Monday we’ll count the votes and reveal the readers’ pick. Until then, here are some of the best available vocalists:

• Kid Rock
• Scott Weiland
• Chris Cornell
• Paul Rodgers
Pink

Axl Rose.

David JoHanson. Then replace the rest w/ Johnny Thunders
Sylvain Sylvain
Arthur Kane
Jerry Nolan
now that would be some fine dirty ass rock and roll

Kid Rock is really one of the “best available vocalists”? For starters, who says he’s available. And furthermore, who says he can sing? I’m no fan of Aerosmith, but Tyler’s got pipes. I don’t think any of those singers (with the possible exception of Pink) would be anywhere near appropriate for the style of singing that Aerosmith’s bloated, zombie corpse requires.

iqaluitdog | 11/13/2009, 6:16 pm EST

Me.

Bruno | 11/13/2009, 6:22 pm EST

I think the best of these vocalists is Chris Cornell… CERTAINLY!!!!

Idea | 11/13/2009, 6:22 pm EST

Why not Hagen, that dude who is singing for Joe Perry Project? That’s simple, and likely the plan anyway….

hohum | 11/13/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Who says any of these guys are “available”, or would touch Aerosmith with a 15-foot barge pole if they were.

kepp | 11/13/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Why would anyone want to see Aerosmith after 1980? And for those people do, why would they want to see them without Steven Tyler?

LA Snark | 11/13/2009, 6:38 pm EST

Josh Todd (Buckcherry)

Cassidy | 11/13/2009, 7:05 pm EST

Adam Lambert’s got the pipes to do it, but he’s doing his own thing.

Seriously, Steven Tyler wants to take a TWO YEAR BREAK? At his age? How old will he be then and will anyone still care? If I were him, I’d make money while I still can. By the way, I think I saw his jacket at Coldwater Creek!

coachmaddog | 11/13/2009, 7:52 pm EST

Johnny Rotten
Suzanne Vega
Neil Young
Tom Yorke

Nobody! Steven Tyler is irreplaceable.

If Aerosmith wants to continue with a different singer, they should respect the fans and do so with a different name.

Tombo | 11/13/2009, 10:00 pm EST

How about Susan Boyle?

XAN | 11/13/2009, 10:20 pm EST

The idea of someone replacing Steve Tyler in Aerosmith makes my stomach churn, but there have been many ghost bands (Lynyrd Skynyrd, ABB, Queen, etc), not to mention groups like Journey or Creedence Clearwater Revisited, so if it happens, I’ll get over it.

To play along with this list, I’d say forget the already famous. We’ve already had Todd Rundgren with the Cars and Paul Rodgers with Queen. We even have Michael Tait of DC Talk with the Newsboys! Ha!

No, if you’re going to do it, go the Journey route and gut an Aerosmith tribute band. You have Chris Vandahl of Aeromyth and Neill Byrnes of Draw The Line. Those are my two suggestions.

After saying that, my stomach is churning again. This seems so bad.

Michelle | 11/14/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Adam Lambert, all he way! who else can hit those high notes.

kels | 11/14/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Shouldn’t they just retire? They’ve been churning out crap for the last twenty years. Isn’t it enough???

toby | 11/15/2009, 8:03 am EST

Why does everyone always over look the greatest singer in Rock… Robin Zander… Not that I would ever want him to leave Cheap Trick.. I ‘m just sayin’!

David | 11/15/2009, 11:25 am EST

I’m gonna say Paul McCartney. :P Now THAT would be funny. And awesome, in a weird way…

DannyBoy | 11/15/2009, 11:30 am EST

Doesnt everyone remember when Motley went on tour with Corabi that year and not with Vince??? the seats were empty in the arenas! That will be the same if Aerosmith goes on tour without Steven Tyler!! NOBODY would go see the Aerosmith backup players WITHOUT their frontman…i mean come on…

DannyBoy

TOM SMITH | 11/15/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Frosted Moses | 11/16/2009, 2:56 pm EST

I vote for Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple). Be kinda nice for Aerosmith to return to their more groove-based vibe of the Rocks era. And Hughes is definitely within the parameters of hard rockin’ funk.
