“Glee” Stars Pick Their Favorite Songs for All-Madonna Episode

11/12/09, 10:11 am EST

There are plenty of reasons to be Gleeful these days: the hit freshman comedy returned after a two-week break with last night’s poignant episode, “Wheels” — the same day the first installment of its soundtrack debuted at Number Four on the Top 200 chart, propelled by lovable renditions of “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “Somebody to Love.” And when the show returns next year, Glee will be tackling the ultimate diva (and recent RS cover star): Madonna.

Last week, the cast stopped by the Rolling Stone offices and revealed they knew some of the songs slated for their all-Madge episode, but remained tight-lipped when it came to naming names. So we asked Lea Michele (star-in-the-making Rachel Berry), Jenna Ushkowitz (Goth rocker Tina Cohen-Chang), Chris Colfer (just out-of-the-closet “fashionable soprano” Kurt Hummel) and Amber Riley (the sassy, soulful diva Mercedes Jones) to pick which songs they’d like each other to sing if Glee creator and music supervisor Ryan Murphy gave them control. Check out the video above to find out who called dibs on “Ray of Light,” who’s an Evita fan and who would be the best Voguer of the bunch.

There’s still more Glee to come in ‘09: the second disc of show tunes is due next month, along with a DVD of the first 13 episodes — and there are four more installments of quips, sass and hit songs hitting the air before the show goes on hiatus.

From “Gold Digger” to “Sweet Caroline,” see the stars of Glee reveal their favorite cover songs

If that still doesn’t satisfy your cravings, watch Jane Lynch (a.k.a. Glee’s villain, Sue Sylvester) on Off the Cuff With Peter Travers, where she reveals her favorite Sue one-liner and sings to our film critic.

Can’t wait for this episode, Madonna (like the Beatles, Stones and U2) has an AMAZING back catalog of hits. My personal fav is Ray of Light (that album is one of the best of the 90’s) but for the show I’d love to hear Boderline, Into the Groove, Papa Don’t Preach, Express Yourself, Vogue, Music and Hung Up. I’m surpirsed the cast doesn’t seem to be as aquainted with her catalog as I’d expect, of all artists she probably has the greatest amount of songs from her back catalog played on the radio daily.

RS get it right: Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Christina, Beyonce, Kylie, Rihanna, Britney and GaGa are “divas”….Madonna is the QUEEN.

Yes, Madonna is the Queen… the Queen of Mediocrity.

The episode needs a guest appearance! Hello??! I can’t wait!

Queen of Mediocrity my ass. Madonna is simply amazing. Can’t wait to see what she’s up to next.

Queen of mediocrity? Yeah right. The woman is a Tour d’ Force. At 51 she’s still the biggest female star in the WORLD and has been since 1984. She’s sold more records then any female, has had more hit singles then ANYONE and her last tour was the biggest EVER by a solo artist. She’s had hits from 1983-present…how many artists have that longevity? She’s a greater performer then just about anyone (aside from MJ) and an awesome album artist. Her voice isn’t a huge diva voice like Whitney Houston or Beyonce but it doesn’t change the fact she makes outstanding music. If you’re going to judge Madonna based on vocal ability then you need to judge other legends that aren’t vocal powerhouses too: John Lennon, Diana Ross, Billie Holiday, Mick Jagger, Bono, Springsteen etc. don’t compare to Stevie Wonder, Freddie Mercury, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston vocally but it doesn’t mean their music isn’t just as good or better.

Oooh! Love Glee and I love Madonna too. People can say all they want…She is a whore, she is talentless…We’ve heard it all before and Lord knows Madonna has too. But after 27 years, she’s still the one to beat. “Celebration” was one of the best songs of 2009! Madonna is and always will be the Queen Of Pop!

Serious Mike? Bono’s the definition of Vocal Powerhouse. Where Streets Have No Name Live from Slane Castle anyone?
And I don’t care how many tickets Madonna’s sold, Beyonce is the greatest female performer of our time, and now that MJ is gone, the greatest solo performer period, regardless of gender.

m | 11/13/2009, 12:37 am EST

ewww…beyonce the greatest female performer of our time? ummm, no…beyonce is a product, a commodity, not a performer and DEFINITELY NOT an artist…we’ll see where b is in 5-10 years…i highly doubt that b will be as relevant to future generations as Madonna…i mean, what has b done, besides marry JayZ and shake her @$$…she’s definitely not revolutionizing music (and never will) the way Madonna has

Beyawnce has a LONG way to go to catch up with Madonna. Isn’t it funny how Beyawnce’s “greatest video” was so similar to Madonna’s “Lucky Star”? I read Beyawnce has around 10 top 10 hits. Madonna has 37… yes, 37!!. I doubt Beyawnce will ever catch up.

Greg | 11/13/2009, 9:53 am EST

One more thing… not many people share your opinion about Beyawnce being the best solo performer b/c her tour was not even close to being as successful as Madonna’s. Our Queen sold so many more tickets than Beyawnce ever will. I read that Beyawnce had to sell her tickets for $2 each just to fill the seats.. LMAO!!

Ha ha Beyonce?! See, everyone’s laughing at that. She is SO boring. Unh- Boring! Madonna is the Head B*tch in Charge, for sure, but if you want to talk about artist who started in this generation it’s got to be Gaga. She has that same level of being fascinating that Madonna has. Beyonce? Did I mention how BORING she is?
