Courtney Love Explores Greed, Vengeance, and Feminism on “Nobody’s Daughter”

“It’s more important than any record I’ve ever made, by far,” Courtney Love tells Rolling Stone of Nobody’s Daughter, her much-delayed and much-anticipated first release since 2004’s America’s Sweetheart. Love began writing songs for Nobody’s Daughter in 2005 during a court-mandated rehab, then spent “66 and a half days” recording with producers Billy Corgan and Linda Perry. After road-testing the material in 2007, however, Love decided to rerecord the album with a different producer and a new band.

See classic shots of Courtney Love, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and other rockers in our grunge gallery.

For the LP, Love has resurrected her Hole moniker, making Nobody’s Daughter the first Hole album since 1998’s Celebrity Skin. “Wherever I lay my head is Hole,” Love tells RS‘ Jenny Eliscu, who sat down with the singer at New York’s Electric Lady Studios for an interview in the new issue. “It’s four letters. It is one of the best band names in fucking history, if I do say so myself. For a while I was a little embarrassed it was maybe vulgar, but at least it’s not phallic. It’s H-O-L-E, it’s a great band name, and it’s mine.” (Former Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson questions Love’s ownership of the name.) Love’s new Hole features 23-year-old Micko Larkin serving as guitarist and co-producer alongside Celebrity Skin producer Michael Beinhorn.

Love says David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, the “good side” of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Eighties goth served as references for Nobody’s Daughter. Thematically, the album finds Love exploring greed, vengeance and feminism. “There’s a lot of maternal instinct on there, and probably my favorite lyric is: ‘Nobody’s daughter, she’s never was, she never will be beholden to anyone. She cannot kill. You don’t understand how evil we really are,’ ” Love tells RS. “I don’t even know what that really means, but I know it’s something to do with my daughter and it’s also to do with me.”

The album — a collection of dark, ragged rock songs — is slated for a January release and includes the ballad “Honey” and the blues-and-punk cocktail “Skinny Little Bitch.” For the full story on Love and her upcoming album, check out the new issue of Rolling Stone, on stands now.

I cannot wait. Courtney is back in a big way.

Weezer Wannabe | 11/12/2009, 5:05 pm EST

I have never cared for H-O-L-E or Courtney Love. She was over-rated before and rode the coat-tails of Nirvana. She may sell a few “units” to curiosity-seekers, but the ghost of Saint Kurt will put a pox on it-so she goes into the bargain bin-like the low-rent “feminist” that she is!

Michael | 11/12/2009, 5:19 pm EST

This will be awesome. Go get ‘em Courtney!

brett | 11/12/2009, 5:26 pm EST

screw all you haters. courtney is awesome and no matter what name she releases her album under, it’s gonna rock; and there’s not much that rocks anymore these days…

thomas anthony hall | 11/12/2009, 6:16 pm EST

I’m really glad that grunge is being revisited and all, but on account of Kurt is dead, and Billy has all but lost his mind, I can’t see this being very good.

Sorry, Courtney. If you didn’t want your entire (once promising) career to be overshadowed by male rock stars, you probably should have hid your bald opportunism a little better.

Holes | 11/12/2009, 6:19 pm EST

That’s some good news, but why no Eric E.? He did great work with her and was with Hole from the beginning. Has he fallen out of fashion?

Mschirmersf | 11/12/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Hole is brilliant and I can’t wait for the new record. Hopefully Courtney will bring her A game and not get eaten alive by celebrity like she has in the past.

Bridget | 11/13/2009, 12:39 am EST

o m q ! ai am sau readdi fo tha new album! biq fann ov tha hole qanq and also tha love herself! cant wait ! xx :)

msr | 11/13/2009, 1:26 am EST

no Eric is no Hole. Hole is an awesome name, but working with Beinhorn again? Seriously? Hasn’t she learned her lesson? Overproduction+Courtney love always ends up with sh*t. See her last album.

thomas | 11/13/2009, 8:57 am EST

Courtney’s releasing a new album?
Did she come across another notebook of Kurt’s songs???

Jon Bovi | 11/13/2009, 9:22 am EST

Please.
4 years to write the album and it’s almost a guarantee that it will suck.

Courtney Love = famous only for marrying Kurt Cobain. The rest doesn;t matter.

Chris | 11/13/2009, 10:22 am EST

She screwed Eric over….didn’t even ask him about Hole.

TobyTyler | 11/13/2009, 10:56 am EST

I thought she killed herself in 1994. Oh, wait…..

Drain | 11/13/2009, 11:32 am EST

I think “Yoko” is more appropriate than “Hole”. Or how about “Suck”

shaun | 11/13/2009, 11:47 am EST

i will dl it for free, hate it, and won’t pay her a cent of my money.

bh in ut | 11/13/2009, 11:51 am EST

Cortney, don’t be an Axl or Corgan, Hole was a band, Eric was there all along, Celebrity Skin was one of the greats,Eric should be back if it is a Hole album.

superjoe79 | 11/13/2009, 12:06 pm EST

finally.

J Lightning | 11/13/2009, 12:45 pm EST

So long as one of these are written by that Sap Corgan should be ok.

Comox | 11/13/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Why bother posting all your anger on this page? If you don’t like Courtney, don’t waste your energy on her.. She isn’t wasting her energy for you! As a MASSIVE fan I look forward to this album, we need some grrrrl rock in the current music scene and who better to deliver it!? x

notafan | 11/13/2009, 3:32 pm EST

nobody wants to see courtneys hole

Karen | 11/13/2009, 4:57 pm EST

She’s kind of obnoxious as a person, but she makes great records. So I will definitely buy it even though she’s annoying sometimes. We really need some great female fronted rock. It’s been too long. I heard some demos online and they were very good.

eddie loeffler | 11/13/2009, 5:29 pm EST

I cant..or yes I can believe there R idiots out there that will go out of their way to trash something

murray | 11/13/2009, 6:33 pm EST

Live Through This is a great album…great guitars and some of the greatest female rock vocals ever…

I doubt Courtney will ever come close to making another…

Peter S. | 11/13/2009, 7:38 pm EST

“Live Through This” is a Great Album, everything else she’s done stinks, this one probably will too.

ralph | 11/13/2009, 9:20 pm EST

i loved every album and i’m sure i’ll love this too!

al bundy | 11/13/2009, 9:33 pm EST

jesse | 11/14/2009, 12:20 am EST

i actually heard a bootleg of most of the album! it was REALLY good! like, moody and really well written! this could be a comeback for courtney. really it was awesome!

Lola | 11/14/2009, 1:00 am EST

“Courtney’s releasing a new album?
Did she come across another notebook of Kurt’s songs???”

A little played out ? Yawn ??

Lola | 11/14/2009, 1:02 am EST

“Please.
4 years to write the album and it’s almost a guarantee that it will suck.”

That’s actually not really that long

gravy | 11/14/2009, 5:23 am EST

Is it true that the new ‘disco Kurt Cobain’ character will star in the video?

tony montana | 11/14/2009, 9:55 am EST

more like BUTTHOLE!

bh in ut | 11/14/2009, 10:25 am EST

“Malibu” was her best as far as I’m concerned.

1992 | 11/14/2009, 10:40 am EST

Love has always sucked. She took chris and dave to court for the rights to nirvana’s music. She’s a fake, plastic waste of space. Oh and she really needs to fix her face bahahaha!

Dnice | 11/14/2009, 1:22 pm EST

How can they call it hole without hole’s main songwriter…Kurt?!?

rabid goon | 11/14/2009, 3:03 pm EST

courtney love has been exploring greed since the day she met kurt cobain.

iwanttoseeherhole | 11/14/2009, 9:33 pm EST

i definitely want to hear this!

brklyn rock | 11/15/2009, 1:36 am EST

I don’ know why i like some her songs but i do think she is a selfish bitch.

tony montana | 11/15/2009, 12:03 pm EST

let me tell ya somethin.
many believe that live through this wasso good cause kurt had a big part of it.
i would’nt be surprised because celebrity skin was such a massive piece of shit.
how could a songwriting leval drop so low?
i believe courtney is a manipulative piece of shit and if this new album turns out to be on a near levalof live through then i wouldn’t be surpirsed if she had a ghostwriter paid handsomely to make it happen.
to me she is a scary woman who should seek major psychiatric help.

Jimbo | 11/15/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Exploring greed shouldn’t be hard for Courtney. She’s been the poster child for that for years. She continues to rape the memory and legacy of her ex husband for every dollar she can get her hands on and blame everything on Chris and Dave. Selling Kurt’s image to Rock Band and lying about it is the latest of MANY examples. Anyone who buys this album or supports anything this disgrace of a human being does is a fool.

redraider3 | 11/15/2009, 10:19 pm EST

I’m very on the fence about this. It is all seeming very Chinese Democracy and we all know how that turned out.

Herschel Alan | 11/16/2009, 1:03 am EST

Wow – lots of hate for Courtney. What bothers me is that many of those bashing her have probably not really even heard her music. I thought America’s Sweetheart was an excellent album. She really seemed to open herself emotionally and it flat out ROCKED! She really exceeded my expectations on that one, and I’m looking forward to hearing what her new stuff sounds like.

tony montana | 11/16/2009, 10:37 am EST

some people think that kurt cobain was murdered and that she had a hand in this as kurt was ready to break it off and thus kick her to the curb.
don’t know if it’s true but she’s a turd junkie degenerate.
sort of like a modern day nancy spungeon but uglier.
i won’t buy an album from this low life piece of shit.

Liz | 11/16/2009, 11:36 am EST

Wow people are so dumb… Do you guys know how many bands are out there that dpn’t have original members and they still keep the band name….??? For instance lets see ummm Nirvana went through like 4 drummers and they never changed there name…. and look at alice in chains… they have a new singer but still keep the band name…. Wow well can’t wait for Holes new album its gonna be GREAT!!!!!

justin anderson | 11/16/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Love her or hate her she will be remembered and she was and is entertaining and fun to watch. unlike some of the boring ass female singers out there… Let’s have another Lilith Fair, bring lot’s of alcohol to make it fun this time!

Samantha | 11/16/2009, 4:01 pm EST

You haters are honestly pathetic. Go back to your Nirvana message boards and stfu about Courtney. Most of these comments are so ignorant its laughable.

The comments about her not writing her own stuff is what irks me the most. Nobody who has ever worked with her has ever said that she doesn’t write her own lyrics. And if you had actually heard more than just two songs on Celebrity Skin you would know that Billy had no hand in the songwriting. He has never been a strong lyricist, and saying that either Kurt or Billy wrote her songs is fucking ignorant. Helping with a chord change or coming up with a riff is not writing her songs for her. Stevie Nicks has always had help with that, and so has Patti Smith – why don’t you attack them as well?

Keep your fucking bullshit comments to yourself and stop talking about stuff you have no clue about.

Karen | 11/16/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Celebrity Skin was a great record. I guess some people might not like it as much as Live Through This because it’s not as hard and as rocking. It’s a softer more melodic poppy record. It depends on your taste. I appreciate heavy music, but I also like poppy things as well.
Some people don’t want an artist to change and grow. They want them to make the same record over and over again, but to me that is boring.
