Behind the Cover Shoot: Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concerts

11/12/09, 4:31 pm EST

Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Bono. Three of the greatest artists in rock & roll history and the cover stars of the new issue of Rolling Stone, which documents the epic Rock Hall 25th Anniversary concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In this exclusive video from the Mark Seliger photo shoot, we go behind the scenes as the three titans of rock pose for the cover of our new issue just hours before they performed onstage on October 30th. All three legends have graced the cover of RS numerous times, but never before have they appeared together.

Check out all of Bono, Jagger and Springsteen’s Rolling Stone covers.

In the new issue, David Fricke and Brian Hiatt chart the concerts’ journey from the first entreaties to artists (Led Zeppelin declined to reunite again; David Bowie couldn’t make it) to convincing HBO to air the shows as a prime-time special on November 29th to the incredible rehearsals and finally to the historic concerts themselves, which feature legends like Metallica, U2, Simon & Garfunkel, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Jeff Beck. Our new issue also features annotated set lists from both shows, backstage photos, essays by contemporary artists like Alicia Keys and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James on the Rock Hall of Famers that inspired them and much more.

Get a look at all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s inductees.

In addition to our behind-the-cover shoot video above, be sure to check out all of our exclusive features dedicated to the Rock Hall concerts. We have the Greatest Moments in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history, photos from backstage and onstage at Madison Square Garden and much more, so head over to our Essential Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Coverage to relive these already-legendary concerts.

Guess what readers? It’s time to move on from worshipping these old rock stars! They’re the best, and we’ve learned so much from them, now can we please start to move on and focus on the future!!! Let’s see a cover story on Grizzly Bear or someone leading the industry in the new generation!

mario tuy | 11/12/2009, 7:12 pm EST

great photos !!!!!
bono, mick jagger, bruce springteen

fitzbath | 11/12/2009, 8:32 pm EST

I am still waiting for someone in this new generation to put something out as good as Exile On Mainstreet, Born To Run, or The Joshua Tree.

jones | 11/12/2009, 8:33 pm EST

NO! We can’t move on Anon. It’s just not the RS way. These guys are gonna have their covers until they are gone.I would not be surprised even if after that RS digs ‘em up for one last cover shot!

ralph jones | 11/12/2009, 10:32 pm EST

So I have to put up with Bono or Adam Lambert on the cover. Seriously can you put someone on the cover who’s music isn’t on K-Rock?

newanon | 11/12/2009, 10:49 pm EST

People can start releasing music as good as exile on main street or joshua tree as soon as they stop believing that we still have to hold these bands on pedistals for eternity. Music can still be bigger and better than our predecessors, Rolling Stone could help by starting to recognize these rock stars are in their 70’s and new bands are coming out with some really great stuff. They aren’t intangible, only if we keep thinking that way.

Maybe when some new artist comes along who’s a little less boring than Grizzly Bear, they can be on the cover.

Oddjob | 11/13/2009, 9:06 am EST

Yeah “Anonymous”, let’s put some lame indie band that nobody gives a shit about. That’ll sell magazines.

These are three of the coolest guys ever to record, all on the cover at the same time, and you find something to complain about. Why don’t you go back to Brooklyn and cry in your chai tea.

garry | 11/13/2009, 3:54 pm EST

The concerts were a celebration of the past 25 years of the Hall. Those guys are certainly among the very best to ever hit the stage during that period. Not to pick on Grizzly Bear, which is not in the Hall. You want a cover shot of a band irrelevant to this discussion?

Donna | 11/13/2009, 4:18 pm EST

I read all these posts & get a bit disgusted that as a 50 yr old, people who read RS don’t want the artists who made & created this great magazine! If it weren’t for Led Zep, Bruce, Bono, The Who, Bowie, Dylan, the list goes on & on. If it weren’t for them no one else would be around. Because if you read what certain new artists say, ” I was inspired by the rolling stones…” well if they are inspired by the “old” generation why the HELL do we need to get them off the cover or stop talking about them!!!! For the ones of you bloggers that feel this way, then you truly don’t know what music is & you haven’t ever listened to a LYRIC in your life…

Albotch | 11/13/2009, 9:47 pm EST

um…70 year olds? Bono – for one – is 49.

Jono | 11/14/2009, 9:44 am EST

Hey Anon,
your post should have been considered off topic and no offense to GB, but they shouldn’t even be mentioned in a post about the Hall. These 3 guys are INCREDIBLE Hall Icons!! Do you seriously think GB will ever be in the Hall?

timmaayyyy | 11/14/2009, 12:20 pm EST

All of a sudden the Bob Seger lyrics “he wants to dream like a young man, with the wisdom of an old man” pop into my head

Anonymous | 11/14/2009, 12:53 pm EST

The rest of you old farts can take this rag home and sit in your rockin chair including you Donna. This old fart has seen and heard em enough and that includes RS.And GB sucks even though they are not old .

timmaayyyy | 11/14/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Beggars Banquet, Aftermath, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., Born to Run, The River, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Boy, October, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree PLUS the emphasis on the live show…..young bands, there’s your blueprint. But don’t forget to sample some Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Robert Johnson, Johnny Cash,Little Richard and Howlin’ Wolf, the Carter Family and Hank Williams Sr, that should give you some inspiration

anonymous again | 11/14/2009, 6:19 pm EST

Hey, I’m not bashing on who they picked for the hall of fame, these guys ARE my heroes, especially the Boss. I love their records, but don’t you all think we’ve had endless covers and schmoozing and butt kissing for these stars for at least 20 years now? We have to start moving on and getting some new bands the spotlight, most bands suck nowadays, but I feel like i’m reading the same magazine over and over again.

mar | 11/14/2009, 8:43 pm EST

perfetti!li prendo tutt’e tre!

sbigdawg2 | 11/15/2009, 3:08 am EST

This is the best issue I have read in a very long time, the Adam Lambert was a joke. You need to get back to the basics and not just write abuot anything. This is what made Rolling Stone what it is today. Awsome issue!

Jose. | 11/17/2009, 5:47 am EST

Where is Metallica!!!!!! This is the most important metal band in the world, that was inducted this year!!!! Its not fair!!!! Justice!!!!

Long Live Rock | 11/18/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Annon again, you just said it yourself, most bands suck these days, so what is it that you want RS to do, but bands that suck on the cover? They already do that enough, don’t encourage them.
I hope that I’m wrong someday, but I don’t think there will ever be bands as good as the Stones, U2, Bruce, etc. And if there are these young talens out there somewhere, will never know because hip hop and rap is jammed down our youth’s throats now a days.

Sammy | 11/18/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Damn-my issue just came in the mail and when I first saw it I mistook it for my monthly AARP magazine! When I realized what it was I was bummed out.
