Steven Tyler: I’m Not Leaving Aerosmith; Joins Joe Perry Project at New York Concert

11/11/09, 9:53 am EST

Rumors of Aerosmith’s impending demise came to a quick and sudden halt last night when Steven Tyler made a surprise appearance at the Joe Perry Project’s concert at New York’s Fillmore at Irving Plaza to announce to the fans that he was not quitting Aerosmith despite previous reports. “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith,” Tyler said to a relieved crowd. “Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I, motherfucker, am the rainbow!” After Tyler’s revelation, the Joe Perry Project launched into “Walk This Way” with Tyler on lead vocals.

Tyler’s announcement comes just days after Perry and other Aerosmith members said they would recruit a new lead singer. The band turmoil began when Tyler told a reporter he was going to work on “Brand Tyler” following a November 1st concert in Abu Dhabi. While fans worried this meant the end of Aerosmith, Perry insisted that the group would not break up despite Tyler leaving the group. “Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin,” Perry tweeted just two days ago, RS reported. Any auditions for a new singer, however, were probably called off after Tyler’s surprise appearance last night.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, at the heart of Aerosmith’s internal strife is a disagreement over what direction the band should pursue. Perry wants to record a new album in the style of the band’s bluesy, Seventies albums while Tyler prefers to stock an album with hit songs written outside the band like “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Perry also publicly expressed disappointment with Tyler after Aerosmith was forced to cancel their summer tour after Tyler suffered injuries from a stage fall in early August.

Two days ago in a radio interview, Perry talked about the band’s supposed split with Tyler. “As long as we’re still kicking, it’s not over,” he said. “We’ll probably get bored and come back.” Whether Tyler is still going to use the next few months to work on “Brand Tyler” remains to be seen, but at least Aerosmith fans know now that this is not the last they’ve seen of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band.

Tyler, Perry, can you please make up your minds????? This is starting to sound like a soap opera.

balloon boy stunt?

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 10:27 am EST

I say Aerosmith’s next record should be entitled: I, Motherfucker, Am The Rainbow

ThatGuy | 11/11/2009, 10:45 am EST

Anonymous, that would be the greatest record title of all time.

Sabhaois | 11/11/2009, 11:01 am EST

Girls, Girls, your both pretty!

MALCOLMKETTERING | 11/11/2009, 11:05 am EST

if RS’ sources are correct and JP wants to return to the old sound while ST wants to keep on with the new ’sound’, then I support JP and the rest in their quest to find a new singer. The Aerosmith legacy is already hanging by a thread with far too many Diane Warren/Desmond Child ’songs’ in their catalog. They need to either write some new rawk songs like they used to, or hang it up.

StevenRoxx | 11/11/2009, 11:07 am EST

LOL I agree with Anonymous !!!

Chrissie | 11/11/2009, 11:09 am EST

….and oooolllldddd rainbow

Until the next hip replacement…

litecodavid | 11/11/2009, 11:18 am EST

Anonymous, you’re right on it! What a great name for their next album. The title track should kick some serious ass. I will begin writing lyrics immediately.

Publicity Cnuts | 11/11/2009, 11:36 am EST

….But hellz yeah! Who better to front the Aeros than the ST!

Steven Higher | 11/11/2009, 11:48 am EST

I think Aerocrap would be better if they had Susan Boyle as their singer. These guys should have called it quits after the Toys in the Attic album. Everything since then sucks.

Kliff | 11/11/2009, 11:56 am EST

Aerosmith needs to lose the outside songwriters so they stop sounding like Cher & Michael Bolton. Go back to your ‘Rocks’ days, smoke & drink a little and maybe we’ll dig you again.

rainbow my ass | 11/11/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Ahh what a bunch of crap. Of course Steven Tyler isn’t leaving Aerosmith. What’s he going to do? A solo album? Please.

Schultz | 11/11/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I didn’t know that Brett Favre was a consultant for Aerosmith…

Mr. Wallingford | 11/11/2009, 12:20 pm EST

What a relief! I was dreading that years from now we’d have a semi-reunion like Plant and Page did awhile back, with the awful, spine-chilling, soul-destroying marquee headline reading FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY: TYLER PERRY!

MB | 11/11/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Hoax thats all it is

Thomas | 11/11/2009, 12:30 pm EST

It’s simple. Make a double album – One half bluesy the other half pop rock hits. Everyone wins, especially the fans.

Rockin' Gil | 11/11/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Look, either record an album/tour, or break up. Besides how many years do they have left? Just make the most of it!

HuffStuff | 11/11/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Thomas is right. Isn’t that essentially what “Pump” was? Didn’t “Permanent Vacation” have both “Angel” and “Hangman Jury” on it?

Joe Perry | 11/11/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Yeah, sorry Dave – No Rock Star Aerosmith just yet.

LoopGuru | 11/11/2009, 12:43 pm EST

I’m with Perry direction-wise. They tried “Aerosmith Sings Dianne Warren” once before. Made big bucks. Lost big fans.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 1:08 pm EST

This Tyler/Perry drama should be made into a movie by Tyler Perry and Steven Cojocaru should play the part of Steven Tyler.

saltlick | 11/11/2009, 1:11 pm EST

It’s only boring old 70’s rock anyway. These guys aren’t Einsteins-
communicate abit before you tweeter crap to the world.

bh in ut | 11/11/2009, 1:28 pm EST

I wish Robert Plant would make the same affirmation about Led Zep. Maybe Joe Perry was right to say we will move forward without and get Tyler out of his whatever and his ass on stage, new album should by Rainbow Mofo

Beltway Greg | 11/11/2009, 1:30 pm EST

That would’ve been the dumbest fing thing that Tyler could’ve ever done, and trust him, he has done some dumb stuff-read the book. Still though if the Bolivian Ragamuffin decides to leave just give Steve Whiteman of Kix a call.

UpgrayeDD | 11/11/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Damn. I was really hoping they were finally over. That band BLOWS.

plo | 11/11/2009, 1:35 pm EST

So Spinal Tap.

Beltway Greg | 11/11/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Look gang I just visited the Joe Perry web site and I had an epiphany. Has anyone ever seen Joe Perry and John Kerry together? Of course not. Why? They’re the same damn person. I think that Joe Fing Perry is John Fing Kerry in a wig. Look at the similarities Joe Perry+John Kerry. They even sound the same. I don’t know about you but I won’t sleep until I find a picture of them together. Don’t believe me? Both are Catholic and both play the guitar and check out the nose and chin. Same dude.

basser | 11/11/2009, 1:40 pm EST

So are Perry and Tyler playing the media/public? Sounds like it. Actually, it sounds like the rumored (but aborted) Faces reuion with Rod Stewart earlier this year (not the recent Stewart-less Faces charity gig recently at the Royal Albert Hall), where Ron Wood and Rod Stewart both were quoted in the media talking about a new reunion tour. Then they, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, all backtracked and said that the reports were only rumors. RCP’s web site even stated Flea was going to replace the late Ronnie Lane on bass for the Faces’ U.S. tour, but then they backtracked and said it was all rumors. Hmmmm. Kind of strange that several different media outlets are interviewing these stars, and then the stars claim they weren’t interviewed at all ….

I just want New York to know.. | 11/11/2009, 1:42 pm EST

that I’m not leaving Aerosmith?

Well shit, I live in Illinois and now I know!:-(

Jessye | 11/11/2009, 1:44 pm EST

I watched the report via internet TV ( LoggTV ) and I knew that this was a joke. Now they will sell tickets.

Fred | 11/11/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Look at the bio of Yes to see a real Spinal Tap saga.

domi | 11/11/2009, 1:49 pm EST

You’re 5 minutes were up in the eighties. Time to put it sleep.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 2:00 pm EST

hahahaah, “i am the rainbow.” that’s perfection.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 2:06 pm EST

you’ve lost your rock n’ roll gut cause you’re not hungry anymore.
you ain’t got nutthin’ to prove but you’re wrong.
you got plenty to prove cause you sold out a long time ago.
pull out therobert johnson and find your soul and stop the dramatics bitches!

Rabbitbunny | 11/11/2009, 2:51 pm EST

Good on you Steven! I just had to know the truth and I got it! You told the truth! I am proud of you!
Which direction will Aerosmith go in-between hard-edged melodic pop/rock and gutbucket harp
Massachusetts blues. I suggest Aerosmith take some advice from Madonna-Kabbalah blues queen
-”There’s enough room for both.”
I like the two approaches, but to Aerosmith, please remember that last two records Play and Honking
were reviewed by Senior Fan
David Frick. Will Aerosmith go for a shattered-glass harp-blues attack circa Toys/Rocks/Pump? Or will Steven conquer his demons at last in the Rock Ballad style
of Get a Grip? Or maybe even the
angry Meowing Cat Steven have a Tale to Tell hearking back to
Nine Lives? Maybe Joe will compliment Steven’s Meowing with the Gibson hissing and growling its riffs with a sharp-fanged attack. With Aerosmith, The Blues
Come Around-as Hank Sr. proudly wrote. Everything comes back around in the rainy New England
streets of Boston. I’ll always be a fan of the Blue Army. Keep Rocking Hard Aerosmith! Your Rocking Blues Train will Keep
a-Rollin.’ Dream On Forever! Rabbit
will always be Trip Hoppin.’

Johnnywa | 11/11/2009, 3:02 pm EST

RS,If you would quit writing about these guys maybe they will go home. The guy is so old that he stumbled around a stage and fell off.I will buy him an AARP card if he’ll just go!!

Chase | 11/11/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Why would anybody listen to an Aerosmith album when they could be listening to a Mellencamp album? I don’t get it.

zee | 11/11/2009, 3:21 pm EST

publicity stunt to sell tickets…

Brother Spike | 11/11/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Get a room for this shit.

litecodavid | 11/11/2009, 4:13 pm EST

It doesn’t matter how old Steven Tyler is, he still out sings and out performs most. Sure there last few records haven’t been as strong as before, but these guys still bring it live.

yokoono | 11/11/2009, 4:49 pm EST

who are these people anyway I have never heard of them…

Aerosmith'sBiggestFan | 11/11/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Dude, Aerosmith is THE BEST rock band that has came together! They CAN NOT break up. Seriously, it wouldn’t be aerosmith if Steven Tyler didn’t do his fucking awesome vocals. Even after 40 years, He still sounds fucking awesome. I’m 15, and I was raised on Aerosmith’s music. They are the best of the best and there is no changing that.

Stevie | 11/11/2009, 4:51 pm EST

great great news, I don’t care if it was a stunt….better Aerosmith, A real band, than say …. Taylor Swift. Aerosmith ROCKS!!!!

Charlie Ocean | 11/11/2009, 4:53 pm EST

love my boys.

Like an old married couple.

Black Hole Sun | 11/11/2009, 4:53 pm EST

So this was just a publicity stunt to get people talking about them, huh? Pathetic. And if Steven has any bit of common sense left, he’ll follow Joe Perry’s route and do a CLASSIC rock album.

Trillion Plates of Rock!!! | 11/11/2009, 5:18 pm EST

They’re better together at this point, considering everyone is performing until their government age ID’s run out with social security and starting over would mean sacrificing global tours for individual bar circuits, casinos, and resorts. Lots of money there, as long as you’re willing to tour a hundred years in a row with no breaks. We love you Steven with a v for victory!

Mach Bell | 11/11/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Enough of this Brett Favre crap!

geez.... upgrayeDD | 11/11/2009, 10:46 pm EST

upgrayeDD….if you dont like their music…..just dont listen.
They are an awesome group and be what they may, they have enjoyed their lives doin what they love.
ROCK ON AEROSMITH !!!!!!

*lol* | 11/12/2009, 12:24 am EST

Three words: JOE. PERRY. PROJECT.

over50 | 11/12/2009, 5:35 am EST

Tyler is still recovering from HCV treatment that is similar to chemo only you do this for almost a full year. It really messes up your body and affects other health issues. Tyler can’t be replaced! He is a one in a million. I wouldn’t listen anymore if he’s replaced. Van Halen learned what happens with a new lead singer, nothing! Be understanding when someone is recovering over a serious illness.

John | 11/12/2009, 12:16 pm EST

What’s the word on Tom Hamilton ? David Hull is still plaing bass.

John | 11/12/2009, 12:18 pm EST

Ty po “playing” .

James | 11/12/2009, 2:55 pm EST

Fer real what is Aerosmith without
Tom Hamilton, except for some diva line up lookin for a bigger purse?
So they have Rocks, & Pump, ‘PURSE’ is another womans accesory perhaps Purse should be our drama queens next album name……

Todd | 11/12/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Been a Fan since 77 and saw the ups and downs Tyler is with the wrong crowd now and they are filling his head with garbage. Joe vis heading in the right direction just saw the Joe Perry Project in NJ and the singer Hagen Krohe could easily fill in for Tyler and thats what i think Tyler fears. Krohe is far from tyler but he kicked ass and had a young Tyler sound so Steven better Sh*t or get off the pot as they say. He is nothing without his band mates and he needs to realize the fans can make him or break him and you are hearing this from a dedicated blue army fan. Steven Grow UP.

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 3:36 pm EST

They really should get back to their old sound. They don’t sound like Aerosmith anymore!!!!!!

yinyang | 11/12/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Well, I actually like their pop rock direction. Just Push Play is one of my favorite albums!

petey | 11/12/2009, 5:44 pm EST

Totally over it, just hang it up. Everything since Pump has been terrible anyway.

Jessica | 11/13/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Steven Tyler, I would miss you if you left Aerosmith. it made me sad to hear about your injuries I hope you stay on. you are in my prayers to get well. please don’t leave us.

erosmf | 11/13/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Aerosmith are a legend, or are all those fans that go to their concerts being paid for it.
The people that bag Aerosmith, just need to move on and get a life. Eg:
A lot of people like country music and a lot dont…so if you dont…just dont listen.
If you dont like Aerosmith…dont listen…its as simple as that!
Leave their amazing music to us that luv it.
AEROSMITH ROCKS BIG TIME !!!!!!
Rock on Rainbow!

aeroinked | 11/13/2009, 4:20 pm EST

No one could ever replace Steven Tyler
Aerosmith would not be Aerosmith without Steven AND Joe
And I’m tire of hearing them referred to as “aging rock stars”
Let see Miley Cyrus or Justin Timberlake when their 60!

erosmf...rocks | 11/13/2009, 4:29 pm EST

Totally agree aeroinked :-)
Imagine doing what you love till that age and doing what people half their age wouldnt have a shit show of doing.
Everyone gets old and they have just proved you dont need to be sitting in an old peoples home playing lawn bowls. I take my hat off to them.
I just hope to get to see a live concert soon :-)

rosemary | 11/15/2009, 11:37 pm EST

I am a huge aerosmith fan, i even flew to london from australia in 2007 to see them perform, they were and still are the worlds greatest rock band, the concert blew me away, steve tyler has the greatest vocals ever, no-one will ever come close, aerosmith will not be the same without him, the magic that is aerosmith just won’t be there, aerosmith i wish you luck, steve you rock whatever you do you will kick ass.

Terri1020 | 11/16/2009, 4:28 pm EST

I saw Aerosmith in 2006 and they were amazing…especially Steven Tyler. Steven Tyler is “Aerosmith” and could not be replaced. Joe Perry on the other hand, could be replaced. Joe Perry really needs to stop badmouthing Steven because he is really starting to look like an idiot.

Anonymous | 11/17/2009, 9:53 am EST

Simple. Steven needs to dump his girlfriend who whispers not so sweet nothings in his ear. She’s his Yoko Ono.

Oscar C. | 11/17/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Chas West for Aerosmith vocalist gig!

DAVE W | 11/18/2009, 2:14 am EST

IM REALLY DISSAPOINTED WITH STEVE TYLER, I’VE BEEN A FAN SINCE ‘87 I WAS 13 YRS OLD..LISTENED TO “PRINCE”, MICHAEL JACKSON, THEN I HEARD “RAG DOLL” AND WAS HOOKED AND HAVE LISTENED TO ROCK EVER SINCE…I MEAN I WENT BACK THRU THEIR ALBUMS MY FAV..76′S “ROCKS” AND WAS JUST BLOWN AWAY…WHEN ARE YOUR TRUE FANS..THE ONES WHOS BEEN PAYIN’ YOUR BILLS GONNA HEAR CLASSIC AEROSMITH AGAIN?? MR TYLER.DONT GET ME WRONG, STILL LOVE AERO..BUT COME ON…”CRYIN” WE DESERVE BETTER THAN THAT AND, THIS BREAKING UP SHIT..SMOKE N’ MIRRORS, IS WHAT THAT IS, OH AND I LIKED “DONE WITH MIRRORS” CIRCA ‘85…GET IT TOGETHER!!! LOL BUD LIGHT GOT CARRIED AWAY…….

DAVE W | 11/18/2009, 2:20 am EST

ONE MORE THING..I DONT THINK TYLER COULD EVER BE REPLACED….BUT IF IT CAME TO IT, I THINK KID ROCK WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE, IF HE COULD PULL OF TYLERS VOCALS…YEAH, KID ROCK WOULD FIT THE MOLD SO TO SPEAK. PLUS IM A MOTORCITY MAN. SCREAMIN’ IN THE “D”

Tet | 11/18/2009, 11:45 am EST

Aerosmith have been pretty patchy since their 70’s heyday, Rocks pisses over any of the latter stuff. I agree with Joe Perry, make a rock album not some MTV crap!

Dennis | 11/19/2009, 2:48 pm EST

I have to admit that I like all of Aerosmith’s music. I hope that Steven stays with the band. Like several others have mentioned, do a new CD with both harder rock and some pop stuff too. They are talented enough of a band to pull it off. Aerosmith Rocks!!!

Aerolos | 11/21/2009, 4:19 pm EST

What ever sells the records. Legends!!!
Tyler Perry Kramer Whitford Hamilton

What ever the next step is, this devoted fan is on board. Thank you for the last 40 years!!!

Armin | 11/22/2009, 3:51 am EST

It would have been interesting to see who they would choose to replace Tyler,
but Aerosmith is strong because all 5 of ‘em.
