Slash Revisits “Paradise City” With Fergie, Cypress Hill

11/11/09, 4:26 pm EST

The first taste of Slash’s solo project has some fans losing their appetite for destruction. Yesterday the Velvet Revolver guitarist released a Japan-only two-song single featuring Cypress Hill and the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie on a WTF version of the Guns n’ Roses classic “Paradise City.” That bizarre (albeit rocking) song and the single’s A side, “Sahara” — a collaboration with Koshi Inaba — quickly appeared on YouTube by day’s end.

“Until now, not too many people have heard Fergie sing rock & roll but she sings it better than most dudes I know. She’s a screamer at heart,” Slash wrote on his Twitter yesterday. This isn’t the first time the Duchess has attempted to out-Axl Axl Rose. Back in July 2008, Fergie and Slash performed “Sweet Child o’ Mine” together on several occasions. Fans turned off by the “Paradise City” remake needn’t worry: “This Japanese release will not be on my record in the West, which is all new original material,” Slash tweeted.

According to Blabbermouth, the Slash & Friends disc will be out in March 2010 and the first single will feature Ozzy Osbourne. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Iggy Pop, Dave Grohl, Chris Cornell, Alice Cooper, Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy, Flea and every Gn’R member besides Axl are all among Slash’s friends. While Lemmy and Kid Rock have since been added to Slash’s roster, the top-hatted guitarist couldn’t lure Jack White to join the project. Slash will also appear on Rihanna’s Rated R on the song “Rockstar 101.”

Fergie sings alright, but it still just doesnt sound right. Dont know what Slash was thinking. People would have ripped Axl apart for doing something like this with an old GN’R song. Dont know why Slash gets away with it.

GNR 4 EVR | 11/11/2009, 4:59 pm EST

This isnt that bad of a version. Anyone know how to get it in the States? iTunes?

surforia | 11/11/2009, 5:10 pm EST

awful, just awful. At least Chinese Democracy was an attempt to sound different… this “cover” of paradise city is just an embarrassing cash grab. If there’s one thing about Axl, it’s that he is NOT a sell out. The guy turned in an album and did zero promotion for it… Chinese Democracy was made for the sake of the art. Before I heard this aural diahrea, I used to say the same thing about Slash’s tunes.

Jeff | 11/11/2009, 5:11 pm EST

This is almost as embarrassing as 90% of the original material Slash has written since 1991.

Further proof that Axl was the heart and soul of GN’R and still is. He knows a thing or two about growing as an artist and songwriting.

Black Hole Sun | 11/11/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Yeah, I like it. Didn’t expect to, but I think this version’s pretty cool.

Mike | 11/11/2009, 5:25 pm EST

I’m just kind of amazed how much Fergie can sound like Axl.

Friggin Tommy Noble | 11/11/2009, 5:40 pm EST

First Fergie pisses on herself, now she pisses on GnR. Nice.

mullethead | 11/11/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Slash is a disgrace. How anyone still thinks that he is cool is beyond me

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Wow, the first scream sounded almost exactly like Axl… creepy.

And the cover should have been with either Cypress Hill or Fergie, not both. Together it just sounds weird.

dubar | 11/11/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Nicks comment is right on. Axl would be ridiculed if he tried something like this. Strange move for a guitarist to do a rap anything. At least RS calls it out for being a “WTF” moment.

Raulinc | 11/11/2009, 7:08 pm EST

Slash sucks.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 7:57 pm EST

I hope he covers Mr. brownstone with Nick Jonas

David | 11/11/2009, 8:04 pm EST

Am I the only one who thinks this is totally badass?

Jimmy | 11/11/2009, 9:00 pm EST

Man….I really like that version. Open your ears people and don’t be too precious.

benji | 11/11/2009, 9:49 pm EST

fergie somehow sounds the same as axl . even if this isnt different its a japanese single, thats not on his album. axl is not way more creative. he may be a better lyricist but thats it. Slash is one of the greatest guitarests ever period.

Cory P | 11/11/2009, 10:01 pm EST

Fergie does it again. First Baracuda now this.

Tarik Tannir | 11/11/2009, 10:45 pm EST

I’m glad people are finally looking at Chinese Democracy for the amazing album it is. People just need to get over the fact that Slash isn’t on it. As for this song, well… it’s kind of embarrassing.

thezero | 11/11/2009, 10:51 pm EST

wow… fergie actually sounds half good for once…

houla | 11/11/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Slash was right about Fergie having a rocker edge. She should become the new singer for Velvet Revolver (are you reading this, Slash?). I don’t see the point in staying with the Black Eyed Peas any longer, they have gotten worse with each album and “Boom Boom Pow” is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard.

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 12:40 am EST

Slash, you’re an idiot!!!! Why don’t you try to overcome your ego and focus on Velvet Revolver again? Oh, and while you’re at it…..get a new management for yourself!!!!

Tim | 11/12/2009, 3:13 am EST

its quite cool….but slash what the f&^k

Magoosd | 11/12/2009, 3:14 am EST

Sounds like something Simon Cowell would put together. Ok Fergie can impersonate Axl well but I just don’t see any non financial reasoning for this. I’m hoping for more off the solo album but past attempts have been adrift from most expectations

bh in ut | 11/12/2009, 9:02 am EST

Chinese Democracy was not art, just self indulgence.
The record company lost their shirts on that.
Slash is just having fun.

Bman | 11/12/2009, 9:19 am EST

I want to hear this… Fergie rocked when she joined Heart on American Idol a couple of years ago.

gp | 11/12/2009, 9:33 am EST

slash fucking rocks

john | 11/12/2009, 10:23 am EST

garbage in garbage out

SeaTea | 11/12/2009, 10:42 am EST

Whatever. I like it. Very rocking and Fergie can sing the hell out of whatever. Chick is bad-ass… don’t let the boobs fool you.

JBird | 11/12/2009, 11:47 am EST

I think its awesome, its new and very much different.. and for those with a “one track mind” who cant see that.. you need to realize that Slash wasnt trying to recreate a masterpiece, he was taking a masterpiece and adding a twist to it.. and it sounds like he did a damn good job

alrighty then | 11/12/2009, 12:12 pm EST

WTF is right. I was hoping to drop a turd bomb over this, but it was actually good! I liked the slowed down groove and the fact that CH didn’t “over rap” the song. Who produced this single? Fergie actually sounded like Axl in places and actually appears to sing very well on this! 7/10.

Disbott 3000 | 11/12/2009, 12:20 pm EST

I agree with all of the previous comments. It was really good and it sucked all at the same time. It’s pretty good, but it’s not as great as the GNR heyday, but then it will never be that again anyway, so you might as well just move on.

Look, is it as good as the original recording? No. Is it piss-horrible? No. Just move forward, people.

knice | 11/12/2009, 12:44 pm EST

i don’t understand why some of you think slash can’t remake any of his songs. if you’ve ever played music in a band you know that it gets old playing songs the same way over and over. it seems like he did something he liked and thought he’d share it. get over it

Lovely | 11/12/2009, 12:47 pm EST

This is an insult for GN’R fans. Do me a favor, dear Slash, ERASE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 12:51 pm EST

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! I know ¨MONEY¨

Vargens | 11/12/2009, 1:33 pm EST

that was just another version. No problem to me.

hey joe... | 11/12/2009, 1:48 pm EST

They did a great job. They should do more together

DannyBoy | 11/12/2009, 2:48 pm EST

Song is good, period. slash rips through the guitar parts as he does. Fergie sounds amazing on it..i didnt know she could sing like that. cypress hill is cool i guess not great though. overall a rockin song. 8/10

DannyBoy

Chuckie | 11/12/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Ugh!!This sucks!

mindy | 11/12/2009, 2:57 pm EST

slash fucking rocks!!!!end of story

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 4:47 pm EST

good idea fern or what ever her name was new v r singer

Jess | 11/12/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Horrible. An all time low. Slash must be in desperate need of money to go this low. This sounds like something i’d hear at a hick bar where a bunch of guys with Mid-life crisis mindsets would be yelling “this song rocks!”

Augustus | 11/13/2009, 12:08 am EST

Fergie sounds pretty good on this cover, but Cyprus Hill? Seriously, Slash? They are terrible. Axl & Izzy Stradlin were the heart and soul of the original GN’R and will never be topped.

Josh | 11/13/2009, 6:59 am EST

Wow. Whoever said that sounds like something Simon Cowell might put together hit it square on the head. No wonder Axl didn’t miss a beat when this guy quit the band. Listen to Slash’s other ughmazing solo work on Slash’s Snakepit and Velvet Revovler. He’s not exactly an idea man.

james | 11/13/2009, 10:52 am EST

sounds good to me

Fly | 11/13/2009, 12:55 pm EST

Wow. SLASH NEEDS HELP. What’s next? ¨Welcome to the jungle¨ is going to be sung by Britney? Go back to VR! Look for a new singer for VR!

barnaclebill | 11/13/2009, 4:55 pm EST

that’s gotta be the cheesiest thing i’ve ever heard…i think i’m gonna puke

Michael | 11/13/2009, 5:58 pm EST

I don’t get this. In all honesty, almost everything rubbed me wrong about it…from the lead work, the arrangement, the rap verses, Fergie’s vocals, which I have never been a fan of.

This didn’t sound appealing but I wanted to give it a shot.

Started out bad. I don’t like those wretched “yes yes y’all this is (insert songtitle) 2009 keepin it real” intros in any type of music. I didn’t like it any better here.

The quality tonal quality of Fergie’s voice seems to have processed cheese food substitute in it but maybe it’s backed up in my ears and I’m blaming her for nothing. I didn’t like the Axl tribute/imitation…ie going nasal at the end of held notes.

Oh well. I’m interested to here Chris Cornell and maybe Adam Levine (if he’s actually on it.)

Anonymous | 11/13/2009, 10:25 pm EST

ABSOLUTELY!!! I dig it, its awesome.

!!!!???? | 11/14/2009, 12:41 am EST

I LUUV SLASH.
BUT DUDE THAT “COVER” SUCKZZ
FERGIE SUCKS, SHE PEES ON HERSELF! EEWWW YUCKY!!

GO BACK TO GUNS N ROSES SLASH!!!

Beth | 11/14/2009, 7:57 am EST

UMMMM I dunno what everyone is whining about that version KICKS ASS, and why because IT IS new and fresh and Axl couldnt carry a note anymore if it was in a back pack on his back anymore. SO why not save the music, by letting fergie who has a GREAT voice JAM OUT WITH HER CLAM OUT!! RELEASE IT IN THE US!!!!

Anonymous | 11/15/2009, 7:36 am EST

this is just a guy paying tribute to his own band that changed direction in front of his own eyes. it’s ok slash… you will alawys rock! don’t listen to negetive feedback

music ny | 11/15/2009, 4:01 pm EST

if you don’t like this version, you just don’t like music. period. fergie can flat out sing, so even though you may hate her for her shit she does normally, (which I do), you can’t deny her talent. I mean you can, but you would be an idiot, and in most cases on here, you are one.

Ash | 11/15/2009, 8:55 pm EST

Apart from the Hip Hopish styles I think this was pretty good. Fergie can really whale. At some points in the song I thought I could hear Axl.

Andy | 11/16/2009, 7:52 am EST

The orginal version of the song is already awesome, so we don’t need any covers of the song. That’s only a waste of time, trying to re-create this song and make it better. It wont be better than it is.

Anyway, I think this was just a funny thing for Slash to do. So we shouldn’t take to much energy and time to judge it.

john milton jr. | 11/16/2009, 7:40 pm EST

Slash is a neo maxi zoom dweepie and a sade person, that’s al I want to say about htis loooooooooooooser.

J | 11/16/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Sounds like a cheesy demo.

Craig Ferrett | 11/17/2009, 5:01 am EST

★ I’m thinking about giving my Slash autobiography to the dog. I always thought something was up with Axl still not getting involved with Slash…now it’s clear. Cheers to you for always keepin true Axl…I’ll buy your albums and rip Slash’s. FERGIE is disgusting…keep fakes away from the rock…bottom line…what a let down man

Anonymous | 11/17/2009, 5:25 am EST

Fergie and Rihanna are a mockery to everything us fans stand for. In todays breakdown of music and spirit, bands like Guns are all we have left. Please dont let us down Slash!!!

Anonymous | 11/17/2009, 5:26 am EST

Scott was bad enough…now we really fooooked

dirk | 11/17/2009, 8:20 am EST

pure cheese…slash is a whore

Groovychick33 | 11/17/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Fergie rocks hard, thanks Slash!

Bill | 11/17/2009, 7:02 pm EST

get over it !

But the songs …they never die…

-This one is hot and will always be

chris | 11/17/2009, 10:49 pm EST

i hate it,it sucks!!! wtf?? why would anyone do this.it is just bad bad bad!!! i feel like my ears just got raped.

chris | 11/17/2009, 10:59 pm EST

fergie may be a good singer but she should stay with what she has been doing hip hop. this crap just sucks. slash what a dumb ass.

Anonymous | 11/18/2009, 2:56 am EST

theres no excuse for this shit…and Guns N’ Roses arent dead Bill…Chinese Democracy has some of Guns best work on it…better than any Velvet Revolver with respect

Anonymous | 11/18/2009, 3:01 am EST

there’s no excuse for this rubbish man…and Guns arent dead Bill…Chinese dem has some of the best work to date on it..sorry to say but better that Velvet or snakepit…with respect

Kry | 11/19/2009, 1:03 am EST

I am incredibly disappointed with Slash over this. Fergie seems to be trying her hardest to sound like Axl (and has nowhere near as much uniqueness and talent). What’s the point in doing a cover if it’s just a money-making rip-off of the original? Wait, I think I answered that myself…

Anonymous | 11/19/2009, 10:16 am EST

Fergie is a man…she’s not hot

Anonymous | 11/19/2009, 1:18 pm EST

FERG THE TERD

lluksmun | 11/20/2009, 6:25 pm EST
