Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Shows: New Issue of Rolling Stone

Over two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden last month, rock history was made again and again: Bono, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and more legends united on one stage to celebrate the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary with a pair of concerts featuring some of the biggest talents of the past six decades. Metallica rocked with Lou Reed. Stevie Wonder sang with Smokey Robinson. The Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie and Will.i.am joined U2 and Jagger for “Gimme Shelter.” Rolling Stone has the story behind these epic concerts, and an unprecedented look behind the scenes of one of the greatest rock events ever in our new issue, on stands today.

Get a look at all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s inductees.

David Fricke and Brian Hiatt trace the concerts’ journey from the first entreaties to artists (Led Zeppelin declined to reunite again; David Bowie couldn’t make it) to convincing HBO to air the shows as a prime-time special on November 29th to the incredible rehearsals, where Springsteen almost rocked his voice away trading “Fortunate Son” verses with John Fogerty. The issue also features an annotated set list for every tune performed by the two epic lineups: Crosby, Stills and Nash, Paul Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on night one (see live photos); Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck, Metallica and U2 on night two (see live photos). Both shows opened with Jerry Lee Lewis and featured special team-ups that helped demonstrate the evolution of rock as a cultural force. As Jann S. Wenner — the editor and publisher of Rolling Stone and the driving force behind the concerts — writes in his editors’ notes, “To me, rock & roll has always been about soul and community. These shows had to tell a story, from the heart.”

Check out all of Bono, Jagger and Springsteen’s Rolling Stone covers.

In a series of special essays in our new issue, artists reflect on their Hall of Fame heroes: Alicia Keys reveals how Stevie Wonder taught her to break musical rules. Wayne Coyne recalls his first Black Sabbath concert. Brandon Flowers speaks about the moment he first heard “Born to Run.” Plus, there’s a guided tour of the Rock Hall and an explanation of exactly how an artists gets included into the Cleveland institution.

We’ll be revealing the Rock Hall’s most memorable moments — from Clapton reuniting Cream to Mike Love’s crazy speech — in videos and photos, as well as Mark Seliger’s exclusive backstage photos. Check out all of our Essential Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Coverage for photos, our full coverage of the anniversary concerts and much more.

Also in this issue: Adam Lambert on his influences, in the studio with My Chemical Romance, the story behind Pearl Jam’s 41-song Philly blowout and our review of Them Crooked Vultures’ anticipated debut.

could’ve been a worse cover

Phil | 11/11/2009, 9:31 am EST

What are you talking about? It is a worse Cover!!!! I always see the same 5-7 people on the cover all the time. Bono Mick and Bruce have been on so many covers in the past few years. Bono was just on the cover two to three issue ago. So much for Variety!!! Feh on Rolling Stone!

Rafael Pompeu | 11/11/2009, 9:41 am EST

way cool picture, nice reunion

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 9:42 am EST

Great cover! Bruuce is lookin’ fine :)

TheCoz | 11/11/2009, 9:51 am EST

Great cover but does Bono and/or U2 have to be on the cover every other month? They are a great band but let a new group have a shot at the cover.

Tabula Rasa '10 | 11/11/2009, 9:55 am EST

when is rolling stone going to put van halen (with roth) on the cover. enough with bono and springsteen.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 9:57 am EST

Bono? Again??

bossfan | 11/11/2009, 10:00 am EST

That is Bruce’s real hair. I must say it’s pretty nice for 60. Bruce is the best part of this cover. Cannot stand Bono!! It’s all about THE BOSSSSS!!!!

jman077 | 11/11/2009, 10:28 am EST

Much better than Them Crooked Vultures. (Though I expect that cover eventually.)

Dominique | 11/11/2009, 10:38 am EST

I often dreamt of a day when James Hetfield and Bono would share the cover. My two favorite bands of all time. This was the perfect opportunity!!!

joshua | 11/11/2009, 10:48 am EST

What is Bono always so afraid of? Falling debris?

loureed fan | 11/11/2009, 10:59 am EST

lou reed needs to be in the rock and roll hall of fame

auramac | 11/11/2009, 11:50 am EST

Lou Reed ISN’T in the Hall of Fame? For shame!

Ari | 11/11/2009, 11:50 am EST

Is that Robin Williams with Bruce and Mick?

Schultz | 11/11/2009, 12:15 pm EST

How much does Bono pay to be on the cover these days – he has been there more this year than anyone… I for one am tired of seeing his smug ass everywhere.

KDK | 11/11/2009, 12:20 pm EST

James from Metallica will look so much better than Bono.

Jon G. | 11/11/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Jagger’s smiling `cause he still has 10x more cool than either Bono or the Boss… and always will.

RayRay | 11/11/2009, 1:00 pm EST

Ok ,now that the “Legends” have had their stage time @”The Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame”can you please send them home before they hurt themselves trying to act as if the are still 21??
I am sick of the $300.00 concert tickets these elder rockers command from their fans.Maybe they should take lessons from some of the younger groups who play for their fans and not just the money.Oh,you want some examples? How bout Green Day? $50.00 tickets ,great 2.5 hr show for their fans.Believe me they are not making a pile of cash after the pyros are paid for and the additional liability insurance for having fans come up on stage to play and sing. How about Blink 182? $25.00 tickets. The list goes on and on .Some you may like some you may not.At least they are not trying to bankroll their retirement in one shot.By the way,Tokio Hotel put two of these guys to shame last week at the EMAs.GO HOME,PLEASE!!

Subscriber Cancelled! | 11/11/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Thanks for contaminating another issue by throwing the living breathing Couric of Bono on the cover AGAIN! Is it just me or does it look like he crapped himself? Man I can’t wait till he gets Malaria in Africa.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 1:17 pm EST

For only being 6 years apart in age, Bruce looks wayyyy better than Mick.

Alice | 11/11/2009, 1:41 pm EST

I LOVE THEM AND THEIR MUSIC ! :)
THEY ROCK !!!

Sande | 11/11/2009, 1:51 pm EST

RayRay- U2 had concert tickets available for $30. I paid $95 for mine, $25 for my Green Day tickets and $25 for my Tokio Hotel tickets last fall. Yes, you can pay $250 for U2 tickets, but you don’t have to.

Dave C | 11/11/2009, 2:00 pm EST

you get what you pay for. U2 is the best band in the universe, Green Day are little punks and copycats who do nothing original. Bruce sucks, he can hardly carry a note anymore. Mick Jagger is old and the Stones havent done anything worthwhile in over 20 years. Come to think of it, neither has Metallica, LOL.

Cathie | 11/11/2009, 2:10 pm EST

RayRay, U2 sells the best tickets for $55. You can also get $30 tickets. Get a clue before going on a rant.

RayRay | 11/11/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Come on now,I don’t want to sit in those $25 seats in the top row of some stadium and you don’t either.
Sorry Cathie I do have a clue. The first time I saw the Stones was in ‘74.And U2 when Bono had zits and a mullet.I have seen these old farts more times than I can or want to even remember.Have fun in those $30 seats.

Brien Comerford | 11/11/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Why no Jeff Beck on the cover. He’s arguably the planet’s greatest guitarist and he’s not been a Rolling Stone cover since 1972 !!!

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Is this the new Rolling Stone cover or an ad for Just For Men hair coloring? Seriously, please fire whoever rubs themselves raw to pictures of Bono and Bruce.

Schultz | 11/11/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Dave C – can you send me some of your drugs cuz you MUST be high!

Juan Cardozo | 11/11/2009, 4:07 pm EST

For several year i´ve heard talking about the power of Bruce in live concerts. Last 2 August i had the chance to prove in the concert of Compostela that Bruce is really the Boss!!185 mins of concert without pauses!! I like U2 and Rolling Stones, and i think that this cover is simply perfect!!

Carlos Leão | 11/11/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Dave C- Don´t drink too much again…It´s dangerous…

Carlos Leão | 11/11/2009, 4:24 pm EST

I always loved Bruce Springsteen concerts and albuns, however i´m goin to show you a letter that i´ve sent to Bruce Springsteen page in Youtube. Untill now i hadn´t a answer back, but however i´ll put here that letter. I have send him a letter cause i was frapped by “Ticketmaster” … Here is the letter:

Dear Bruce Springsteen

Sorry for this inconvenience, but i need to tell you one thing that happened to me buying tickets to your concert at Giants, 2 October 2009, in the Ticketmaster site.
I have got the ticket through a friend of mine that lives in the USA, because here in Europe the fans couldn´t buy the tickets through internet (don´t ask me why but it´s true…).
She bought the ticket cause i ´ve sent to her the numbers and codes of my credit card, because i trust her and i know her since 1988.

So the problem is – I got this ticket but some months later (in July) , my mom was warned by doctor that she is very sick and she needs to make a stomach operation that will be next saturday (3 October).
I have send some emails to Ticketmaster to help me sell the ticket.
I have a brazilian friend that wanted to buy the ticket, and i asked to Ticketmaster if they could change the name of the ticket to his name.
The answer of Ticketmaster was :

“Thank you for your e-mail. If the cardholder will be unable to attend, we may add an alternate pickup name to your order 22-43723/NY1. Please disregard the previous email, as we have contacted the venue and have been approved to add an alternative pick name to the order. Please reply with the alternate name you wish to add.

Please be advised that in order to pick up the tickets, they will need to bring their picture ID, the actual credit card used to place the order (or a front and back copy of the credit card), as well as the order number.”

Now i ask – I don´t know the guy in real life, i just talk with him in the net, how can i make a copy of my credit card to someone that i never saw in my life?? Nowadays anyone can make shops in the internet with credit cards, so, how can i give a copy of my card to someone that i never saw??…

I had more two friends interested in the ticket, but they are friends that i´ve met for one day in your concerts through Europe, it´s insane to make someone give his credit card copy to a stranger, i think…

I made a second try to have my money back, so i asked them to send me the ticket by normal ship to my house in Portugal.
The answer was:

“(Martin_ZYS735)07/31/2009 09:30 AM EDT
Dear Carlos,

Thank you for contacting us regarding order number 22-43723/NY1. We do regret any inconvenience. Ticketmaster does not mail or ship tickets to billing addresses outside of the United States or Canada. The only method of delivery made available for international customers will be to have the tickets waiting at the box office will call window. Once again, we do regret any inconvenience.”

I made a third try to recover my ticket or my money and i asked them to send the ticket to the house of my uncle that lives in the USA, – Cambridge (M.A)-.
Do you want to know the answer of ticket master, Dear Bruce??

Here´s it is :

“(Martin_ZYS735)08/04/2009 03:02 PM EDT
Dear Carlos,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding order number 22-43723/NY1. For your protection, we only mail tickets to your credit card’s billing address. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Since the billing address for your credit card is not within the United States, we are unable to deliver your tickets. However, we will have your tickets waiting for you at the venue’s box office will call window. Tickets at will call are typically available one hour prior to the event time. In order to receive your tickets, you must present the credit card that was used to purchase the tickets, your picture ID, and the Ticketmaster order number issued to you during the sale. The will call window at the box office is usually located near the main entrance of the venue.”

For my protection?? It´s funny when they keep with our money, we don´t receive the tickets, and they say it´s for OUR PROTECTION…Hilarious!!

I know that you don´t have time to concern for problems like this, but i think that your european fans deserved more respect, specially because no one can guess that will health problems in the futur.
Each time that Ticketmaster is selling your tickets to shows in the USA it´s impossible to buy it cause the operation is always falling!
I hope that the owner of Ticketmaster have a good Happy Family meal in the Mac Donalds with my money…
Thanks for your time reading this.
Tramps like us

So Dear Rolling Stone fans, take care when you buy tickets in Ticket Master Site…

allliieee | 11/11/2009, 4:51 pm EST

awww i want just mick!!

bonosluv | 11/11/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Bono couldn’t look more sexy!!!

The Dude | 11/11/2009, 5:47 pm EST

There aren’t any younger bands making 1/2 the impact that U2, The Stones, or Springsteen have made over the years. These guys may be getting old but they are still packing arenas and stadiums and influencing people. I would include Metallica and JBeck in the same group.

randomRSreader | 11/11/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Bono and Bruce on the same cover.
Mick as a Bonus. Nice one

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 6:56 pm EST

Well Dude, I think you forgot Pearl Jam…

Jim K | 11/11/2009, 7:00 pm EST

Man, you put three rock icons together on the cover of rock music’s most enduring magazine, and people STILL gotta complain.

GREEN DAY FAN!!!!! | 11/11/2009, 7:13 pm EST

WOW i thought it was going to be a hot Jon Bon Jovi cover but this is great!!!!! i love Mick & Bono!!!!!! Nice cover RS :)

To: Dave C-

Green day are very original!!!! you don’t know what you are talking about!!!!!

Muldfeld | 11/11/2009, 8:50 pm EST

Well first off, let me open by saying the obvious, Rolling Stone has again proven it’s irrelevance by placing these three old geezers on the cover together. Rolling Stone, like many of it’s readers, is clearly living in the past. There was a time when The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and U2 were all amazing and relevant bands who made great music. Unfortunately those days are long gone. Aside from a song or two on their latest outing, U2 has not made anything remotely interesting since 1996. And the fact that the majority of America turned on them for “boldly going where no mega-star band had gone before” (inside of a giant lemon) caused this once unstoppable band to run back “into the arms of America” with their creative tail between their legs. Thus we have 2.5 boring albums (ATYCLB, HTDAAB, and half of NLOTH) as proof that U2 has sold their artist integrity in return for radio airplay. The irony here is that the Flop-ahem-Pop album actually had bigger hits than anything of this past decade. Strange isn’t it? Yet here we are, U2 by the numbers, not getting any younger now are they? In this age of internets, these aging supergroups with their super longevity has gone the way of the dinosaur. Clearly people no longer depend on radio to tell them what is good music, or event MTV or VH1 or the single at the record shop. Now they have access to all kinds of music that is available that they never before would have heard of. So bands like U2, the Stones are no longer force fed to them like in days past.
In closing, i should add, i don’t expect the average reader to understand what i am saying because im sure it would be over their head. Surely, if the fansites of these bands were any indication, my words will fall on deaf ears and i will be blasted for my comments. But in the dark corners of your world you know what i am saying is true. You just cannot let go and admit it.

Nathan | 11/11/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Don’t worry about it, Dave C has no clue what he’s talking about….

Bruce, Green Day, and, yes, U2 all rock. Green Day will be in the HOF as soon as they are eligible.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Black Eyed Peas and Fergie! C’mon, get a grip!

HAPPY FAN | 11/11/2009, 10:04 pm EST

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T NOTICE THIS ISSUE IS ABOUT THE HALL OF FAME, BONO KEEPS GETTING COVERS AS HE IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MUSICIAN AT THE PRESENT MOMENT, READ THE NEWS PLEASE.

Bubba | 11/11/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Anything is better than NWA on the cover.

Big Jim | 11/11/2009, 11:16 pm EST

How about putting John Fogerty on a cover? The guy is the greatest songwriter ever!

Jethro | 11/11/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Who gives a crap about these concerts? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sucks.

Bill | 11/11/2009, 11:40 pm EST

Enough fucking Bono on the cover. Jesus! What’s it been, 2 months?

skadi09 | 11/12/2009, 12:58 am EST

I sense a lot of animosity towards Dave C, I read his post and now understand why.. You deserve what you have coming, I’m sure you’re not even close to seeing the end of it. Happy days! :)

p.s: Metallica = Awesomeness

Anais | 11/12/2009, 4:02 am EST

Tokio Hotel ROCKS XD

No Line On The Horizon | 11/12/2009, 6:20 am EST

Great cover. U2 is by far the best Rock N Roll Band on the Earth. U2360 is a sight to be seen. A modern Marvel. RayRay I paid $50 and I was in the Pit At Soldier Field in Chicago and Again in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl. You tell me who can bring down the house with 97,000 fans. Green Day is good, give them a few years and some more maturity and they will command just the same amount of Money. Blink 182? Seriously? I would only pay $10 to seem them.

Bruce's Toupe | 11/12/2009, 8:34 am EST

That is not Bruce’s real hair. He’s been wearing a piece for years. It’s quite obvious. Same thing w/Bono but Bruce’s is much worse. There are pictures from the show w/him sitting on Billy Joel’s piano where it’s so obvious it’s a toupe. I know everyone loves to ballwash Bruce but a toupe is a toupe.

stevefrehley | 11/12/2009, 8:34 am EST

James Hetfield should most definitely be on that cover as well. Big oversight.

Linda Almeida | 11/12/2009, 10:09 am EST

How can I order this issue?
Mick and Bono are my stars for more than 20 years…in the sky, on earth, in everywhere….
I really love them! They had made my days better through this years God bless them for existing… I love the Boss, too, but not so specially..

Kliff | 11/12/2009, 11:36 am EST

All legends but yes, we need more variety and less rap & madonna on the covers.
How about the following:
1. Van Halen
2. Them Crooked Vultures
3. Lenny Kravitz
4. Paul McCartney
5. Eagles of Death Metal

Kliff... | 11/12/2009, 12:54 pm EST

putting the Eagles of Death Metal on the cover would rock! But think about this… just put Josh Homme on the cover! I mean think about it, he’s been making great music with many good bands: Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, and the band RS loves right now (Them Crooked Vultures) to name a few. Rolling Stone, it’s time you put Mr. Homme on the cover. You guys are having a bad case of repeat-cover syndrome right now. It’s time, it’s time.

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Kliff,

Those are all artists deserving to be on the cover, but none of them have any real reason for a cover story, at the moment.

No new albums (save for McCartney’s new Citi Field live album, which doesn’t really command attention).

When Lenny Kravitz releases a new groundbreaking or big selling album, he can have the cover.

Same with Eagles of Death Metal and Van Halen (their Guitar Hero video game doesn’t count, just like McCartney’s live record).

Them Crooked Vultures would be a timely cover right now, but Rolling Stone is in the business of SELLING MAGAZINES, and frankly 99.9% of people don’t know who Them Crooked Vultures are (yet), despite the supergroup members.

the mule | 11/12/2009, 2:10 pm EST

For the record, U2 were horrible at the actual concert. Along with bruce and Patti Smith, they screwed up Because the Night. Metallica, who playedjust before U2, blew them off the stage. U2 are terrible musicians. Unless you buy into Bono’s Messianic nonsense, they brought nothing to the table. Just my opinion. And Jagger only made it worse.

Jack | 11/12/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Gotta love Bruce.

Jack | 11/12/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Where is Pink Floyd, David Gilmour on that cover??, anyway, three legends, put Mccartney,Plant,Page and Gilmour and thats it

Myron | 11/12/2009, 3:26 pm EST

When rock music can give us something to replace U2, then Bono will stop being on the cover every other week. Fact is, current rock is boring and U2 continues to make great music.

Sidewinder | 11/12/2009, 4:29 pm EST

Music is very diverse and people will have their favorites – let them have that privilege. I enjoy my music very much and these guys are legends – but I must admit that U2 is incredible. And no – I have not been a U2 fan for 30 years – I became a fan 3 years ago, and will never look back. So yes, they are still very relevant, and they are so much more than just music. I hope they can continue for another 30 years – and Bono should be on a lot more covers than just RS – you just can’t keep a good man down. Enjoy!

Belle Isle | 11/12/2009, 4:57 pm EST

U2 may be “old” by some people’s standards but they are still probably the greatest band on the planet. I caught their 360 show recently and it was absolutely amazing. Muldfeld, i dont know what your problem is but i think you need to stop being so critical and get out and enjoy life a bit more.

damn mick | 11/12/2009, 5:25 pm EST

even that ugly chick from americas got talent, looking at mick and saying “damn!”

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Sometimes I just don’t understand why people always have to make such rude and offensive remarks about a person or people they don’t like. I understand the fact of freedom of speech and everyone has their right to voice their opinion, but why must we be so cynical? In this day and age the world needs more people who care for all mankind.

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 11:35 pm EST

So much angst and anger over a cover. Its only ROCK N ROLL and I like it!

Merv | 11/15/2009, 7:55 pm EST

I’m a big U2 fan, seen them a few times live (not yet on this tour though) and they are usually amazing. I thought they were really disappointing at this concert. When there wasn’t guests on stage it seemed like they were just going through the motions.
For the record, Patti Smith screwed up Because The Night, not U2 or Bruce. And when they got it right, it sounded great.
I do not like Metallica at all, but they probably had the strongest set of the night. Ray Davies stole the show with them.

The Perp | 11/15/2009, 8:43 pm EST

For the few people commenting stuff like “who cares? the rock and roll hall of fame sucks”… who gives a sh*t? These shows could have had nothing to do with the hall of fame and they would have still been amazing. Just the chance to see all these different performers live and collaborating together over two nights.

Cactus Jack | 11/16/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Look at page 103. “Inside the Hall” (of Fame)

Les Paul’s, second ever electric guitar….

Dude! It goes to 12!

the great | 11/18/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Great cover, three rock&roll legends, sorry guys, those who do not like bono and want someone else on his place here, you can just write negative stuff and that’s all you can do unfortunatelly, people full of hate you can just buzz off!
