Britney Responds to Australia Lip-Synch Controversy, Declares Tour For Fans Not Critics

After a bout of negative reviews, Britney Spears has spoken out over the lip-synch controversy that ignited in Australia following her first two Circus tour concerts Down Under, the BBC reports. “I hear there is a lot of controversy in the media about my show,” Spears said yesterday in a statement. “Some reporters have said they love it and some don’t. I came to Australia for my fans.”

Check out photos from Britney’s Circus Tour here.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the Aussie press claimed that concertgoers at Spears’ first two Circus shows in Perth began vacating the venue only a few songs into Spears’ set when it became apparent the singer was, in fact, miming her songs. Spears was also criticized for what reviewers deemed as a lack of engagement with the crowd, only once talking to the audience to tell them how beautiful Australia was. The controversy was amplified when the fair trade minister of New South Wales proposed marking Circus tour tickets with a disclaimer saying the show is mimed and pre-recorded.

Considering Spears’ lip-synching has been widely reported since the Circus tour kicked off in New Orleans on March 3rd, it’s surprising that Aussie fans expected the pop diva to sing. (Rolling Stone’s review of her New York show also makes note of the lip-synching.) “It’s been all over the Internet for nine months,” said Spear’s tour promotor, Paul Dainty. “This show is about an incredible spectacle, which it is.”

After a four-day break that included a fun day of shopping — “Got a lot of my Christmas presents. Melbourne is beautiful,” Spears tweeted Monday — this controversial Circus tour will resume tonight with the first of three concerts in Melbourne.

She’s a spectacle all right.

Jere | 11/11/2009, 3:51 pm EST

I wish I lived in Australia. Where their fair trade minister has nothing to do but make sure concerts with lip-syncing are properly labeled.

David | 11/11/2009, 3:53 pm EST

Well.. she’s still alive because of her fans, not for her talent. she’s not an artist, not even a performer.. she’s just an entertainer. she’s not the princess of pop anymore, that’s so 99. She doesn’t sing on stage, she doesn’t dance on stage, she walk the whole show, she can’t write a song, she’s not a producer of her own projects or albums or cd’s or whatever. She better improve her career because she looks like a member of “hi5″ on stage and in her artistic life.

Schultz | 11/11/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Time to be a fan of someone else… at least she knows, or seems to know, who she is there for.

Neo | 11/11/2009, 4:44 pm EST

The fact that Rolling Stone even has a story about her, should tell you how far this magazine has fallen

Leonie | 11/11/2009, 4:54 pm EST

australians need to get freaking over it. what did they expect from her. to sing live just for them while she didn’t to the rest of the countries she visited? she’s done it her entire carreer. Yes she does need a wake up call. but leaving a concert after just 3 songs and then complain about wasting your money is ridicules.. sit the thing out then. walking away is more of a waste than staying and trying to enjoy her show. it’s a show, not a songcontest. and it’s not like none of them knew what they were up to. she’s doing this show ever since march 3rd of this year. plenty of time to go on youtube or wherever to watch the video’s and reviews. you knew she wasn’t gonna sing just for you. and it’s your own choice to buy the expensive tickets while there were cheaper tickets as well. get over it already.

Johnnywa | 11/11/2009, 5:56 pm EST

She’s a no talent bayou-slut.She can’t sing so she doesn’t.She needs to go back to the swamp and play with the other snakes.

Sean | 11/11/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Britney doesn’t need to tour AU. She’s doing it as a favor, and she gets treated like this! Britney has no more need for money. She’s been doing this whole tour for her fans and others to benefit off her success!

AU doesn’t deserve to be graced by Britney’s presence if she’ll be treated like garbage.

Iowa Hater | 11/11/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Doing it for her fans? Doing what…ripping them off? It’s truly amazing. $100 to watch somebody lip-snych and “dance” to somebody else’s choreography. But if the people keep showing up and giving her (free) money….then I suppose more power to her. It’s a shame her “fans” don’t have better taste in music.

gaston | 11/11/2009, 11:05 pm EST

come on people britney sucks a lot she cant do anything like an artist, the only thing she has, is that she is super hot and some hits that never had been wrote by her

kym | 11/12/2009, 12:00 am EST

look SEAN you can have your bluddy britney spears we dont need her here and who needs sum1 on stage that cant even sing i agree with IOWA HATER

em | 11/12/2009, 12:08 am EST

sean: Britney does need to tour Aus because she has x amount of fans here, and her fans are doing her a favour by paying $$$ to see her. Britney’s neglect of her aus fan base for all these years has been really rather disappointing,I’ve been a fan since i was 10 and didnt get to see her till now (im 20)!
I attended her conert last night in melb and thought it was amazing…no she cant sing or dance but the show itself was worth it.

LordLucan of Sydney | 11/12/2009, 1:00 am EST

Britney`s best visual recordings were the ones on youtube when she skanked it up on meth. so yesterdays girl. give it up, sweetie and retire to the milli vanilli rehab, way down the Quays. We like it live, luvie.

MB | 11/12/2009, 11:51 am EST

Haha she should do all of us a favor and stay in Australia

Vic De Zen | 11/12/2009, 12:24 pm EST

I love how Australia is making it a law for musicians to state weather or not their lives shows are lip synced by law/contract. I wish North America would do this as well!

Joey | 11/12/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Why would anyone want to pay money to see a recording artist lip-synch their songs live?

JT | 11/12/2009, 3:39 pm EST

she actually has a response to something? Her meds have made her blank face even blanker.

DOGFISH | 11/12/2009, 5:22 pm EST

It’s for her fans?Oh,I was so wrong about her.I feel so bad.I thought she blew all her money on booze and drugs until her daddy got hold of it.You are stupid if you think that nasty scum gives a damn about her fans.

Kate | 11/13/2009, 9:36 am EST

C’mon!!!everybody knows Britney can’t sing a note!!!she is a great performer, she is hot,but not artistry there, so…save your money Aussies, kelly Clarkson is going to AU in a couple of months, there you can enjoy real talent,100% artist!!!she’ll blow you away with her Voice,no needs of dancers or fireworks, just her voice and charisma, she is sweet and down to earth, not a diva like Brit.

John | 11/13/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Britney Spears.Never liked her,never will.

Corrine | 11/14/2009, 3:41 am EST

Loved Britney, Im an aussie.. everyone knows she lip-syncs and that is why she dances and provides entertainment. nonetheless, hearing the music you love, seeing britney for the first time and being entertained is enough :) I would love to go back :)

Pink, lady gaga and kelly clarkson are the one’s you wanna see sing live.

Respect Britney | 11/15/2009, 8:58 pm EST

False Accustions Of Reporters Who Weren’t There.

If you look at any concert photos of Britney, she is wearing a mic. The only problem was with those falsely accusing and making negative public comments just because those behind that wanted attention. Walk out on the false news reporters. Cancel your subscriptions to those involved who could tell people what the news was or treat people farily or honestly.

theMime | 11/16/2009, 9:20 pm EST

FYI
ROLLING STONE did have her on the cover a few years ago proclaimin gher to be “The Woman of rock”

so yeah theyve been nursing that tit forever, covering her aint nothing new.

RS HAS SUCKED SINCE the 80’s

Em. | 11/16/2009, 9:37 pm EST

RespectBritney?
no. just cause she was wearing a mic doesnt mean she was singing? you can turn off a mic… she doesnt dance. guys, youtube Michael Jackson and Britney Spears and its really funny. all she does is walk around stage and goes ‘ohh’ at the end of the song she lets Michael do all the work. she cant preform. sure, she was ALL RIGHT before… but now… ugh. shes tryign to hard to keep her career alive when its been over… since a long time ago.

aef | 11/17/2009, 12:17 pm EST

OMG, Australia! Britney has never hid the fact she lip syncs. If you don’t like it, don’t go!!

Is that so hard??

Sammy | 11/18/2009, 9:33 pm EST

You stupid! “she’s wearing a mike so she must be singing.Dumbass
