Rolling Stone Readers’ Poll: Greatest Music of the Decade

11/10/09, 6:14 pm EST

The end of the decade is nearly upon us and on December 9th, Rolling Stone’s panel of critics, artists and industry figures will name the best songs and albums of the past 10 years. But we want to know what you think too. Starting today, we’re asking the Rolling Stone readers to tell us what they think is the Song of the Decade and the Album of the Decade. Plus, be sure to place your vote on the Readers’ Poll ballot to help decide the pick for Artist of the Decade.

Who will it be? Timberlake or Radiohead? Jay-Z or Beyonce? Springsteen or U2? You can only vote for one song, one album and one artist of the decade, so think long and hard before casting your vote. The balloting stars today and runs until Monday, November 30th, giving you 20 days to make these difficult decisions. Click here for the Readers’ Poll ballot and remember to check back on December 9th when we reveal both Rolling Stone’s and the Readers’ Poll picks.

No OutKast among artists of the decade? That seems like an oversight.

StrummerJones | 11/10/2009, 6:37 pm EST

You guys put Black Eyed Peas and not Outkast on artists of the decade? Oh, and you neglected The Hold Steady, TV On The Radio, and Drive-By Truckers? Anyway, I’ll say my votes.

Album of the decade: Dear Science – TV On The Radio

Song of the decade: Stuck Between Stations – The Hold Steady

Lindsay Anderson | 11/10/2009, 6:47 pm EST

What about John Mayer? Helloooo.

Richard | 11/10/2009, 6:49 pm EST

Gosh, OutKast seems like so long ago (2003), but they certainly deserve to be in the conversation.

It’s going to be hard to dismiss U2, Radiohead, Jay Z, Eminem, and even Springsteen.

Wow.

Matt | 11/10/2009, 6:53 pm EST

Ummm, shouldn’t we wait until, say, 2011 to name the best music of the decade?

Kevin the Robot | 11/10/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Outkast
RHCP
The Hold Steady
Ryan Adams
TV on the Radio

It’s criminal that these names aren’t on your list. Thank God you left off Britney Spears though.

Frank from MusicNerdClub.com | 11/10/2009, 7:26 pm EST

Though I wouldn’t necessarily anticipate any of the following to win, it was tragic to leave off OutKast, Ryan Adams, Foo Fighters, The Killers, The Strokes, Beck, and The White Stripes (yes, I know Jack White is on the list!).

BFGibbons | 11/10/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Guns N’ Roses – There Was A Time

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 7:42 pm EST

No White Stripes on that list? Whoops.

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Edit: Just saw the Jack White thing. Still.

Kyle | 11/10/2009, 7:46 pm EST

“Hey Ya!” has been a lock for Single of the Decade for years now.

D.J.P.M. - the new dawn | 11/10/2009, 7:47 pm EST

I cast my vote for DJ AM, i love his hits… especially the song he wrote called “MASH UP and SERATO beats Real Vinyl ANY DAY!”

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Golden Age – TVotR
or
Encore (Grey Album) – Jay-Z
or
15 Step – Radiohead

sherwin | 11/10/2009, 7:53 pm EST

I would’ve put Queens of the Stone Age on that list. I love Arcade Fire, but can a band with two albums really be the band of the decade?

Rock'n'roll IS noise pollution | 11/10/2009, 8:02 pm EST

My vote is for Yo-Yo Ma, his output of material this decade has been FANTASIC. From Classic Yo-Yo to Songs of Joy and Peace. What I really want to know is, does Yo-Yo walk the dog himself or pay someone to do it for him? Because we all know he goes around the world and I just don’t know when he would find the time to walk the pooch.

BushCrimeFamily | 11/10/2009, 8:14 pm EST

Green Day – “American Idiot”

Best album of the decade

nonny | 11/10/2009, 8:20 pm EST

eminem certainly should be on this list, marshall mathers lp and the eminem show are incredible albums. songs like the way i am, stan, till i collapse, lose yourself, white america.

Newch91 | 11/10/2009, 9:15 pm EST

Album: Elephant – White Stripes
Song: Beautiful Day – U2
Artist: Jack White

Jeff | 11/10/2009, 9:50 pm EST

I’ll bet 100 bucks that RS picks U2. I mean, they rubber stamped a 5-star rating on their new album, so surely RS thinks they’re worthy of this title as well…

Uh, my vote is with Radiohead or Jay-Z.

Cole | 11/10/2009, 10:08 pm EST

The college dropout- kanye west is the best album

when you were young- the killers
best song of the decade

Arun | 11/11/2009, 12:16 am EST

What about Green Day?

American Idiot is by far the best album of the decade!

paully812 | 11/11/2009, 1:41 am EST

How about Audioslave’s self titled debut? 5 solid singles on one album. That’s pretty impressive. Cornell is a god in any decade. Morello and Co. are unbelievable. A single song is a tough choice, but that album is unbelievable.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 2:13 am EST

Jack White as artist of the decade without hesitation.

Album is hard to pick- Funeral, Kid A, In Rainbows, White Blood Cells, Elephant, Songs for the Deaf, Dear Science, Evil Urges, For Emma Forever Ago are all viable options

Song- Hey Ya!

johnny | 11/11/2009, 7:45 am EST

BRITNEY SPEARS? | 11/11/2009, 12:24 pm EST

Where’s Britney Spears on the poll?!!!

She’s the most successful female artist of the decade. RIGGED.

Nicky | 11/11/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Britney!

…oh wait she is not there. WTF Y’ALL!

You're kidding right | 11/11/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Where they hell is Britney????

You're kidding right | 11/11/2009, 12:33 pm EST

*the and srsly the Best selling female artist of the decade isn’t on this list FAIL rolling Stone FAIL

Hmmm | 11/11/2009, 12:34 pm EST

There must be a mistake because I don’t see Britney Spears as an option on the poll. You know… Britney Spears? The woman who’s been on 8 of your covers and is the best selling female artist of the decade?

Wicked Witchy | 11/11/2009, 12:35 pm EST

The fact that Britney Spears is not even there says ( ONCE AGAIN ) that RS consists of nothing but pretetious pricks that can’t see past their own judgmental opinions. You may hate her but she is Pop Royalty and instead placing bands on there that will long be forgotten in 2011 makes this list not only a joke but a slap in the face of music lovers. Basically you are clueless what the music scene is about and have been so for the last few years. Get of your high horse morons.

O.o | 11/11/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Seriously, no offense…where is Britney Spears? She is successful, doesn’t matter if you like it or not. I’m not siding with anyone. She should be on the list. Be unbiased.

leo3375 | 11/11/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Where’s NIN? They sold out arenas and made valid arguments for why the old music-distribution models are obsolete while exploring ways to get the music to the fans right away without losing any profits.

Nrt4 | 11/11/2009, 1:12 pm EST

All the best bands you don’t report on.

Band of Decade: Wilco
Album of Decade: The Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit
Song of Decade: Sax Rhomer #1 by The Mountain Goats

Lennon Fan | 11/11/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Album: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb by U2
Song: Vertigo by U2
Artist: U2

what the actual fck? where’s britney?

Dany | 11/11/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Where the fck is BRITNEY SPEARS???!!!

StrummerJones | 11/11/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Yeah, Rolling Stone is so pretentious. That’s why they have Black Eyed Peas on here while ignoring typical Pitchfork fodder, even the universal stuff like Daft Punk and Outkast.

The Spears fanatics are laughable in this case. Not only is Rolling Stone unpretentious, it has no shame.

Jenna | 11/11/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Out of that list, Radiohead.

But the artist that pretty much sums up this decade and was relevant in 2000 and is relevant today really is Britney.

Samuel Erthal | 11/11/2009, 4:37 pm EST

sorry, but I think not even need a poll to see who is right? Britney Spears, is the artist of the decade.

Carrie | 11/11/2009, 4:40 pm EST

This was a huge failure, botarem to Britney Spears. Independent poll or not, it is the artist of the decade, to be sure.

britney spears..artists of the decade and princess of pop!

Tammy | 11/11/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Seriously. There was a mistake?
Britney Spears is in fact the artist of the decade! not a fan of her but her influence since 1999 has been undeniable. The only artist to debut with 6 albums in the first Hot 200 I think. The artist who sold more in the decade, everyone wanted to be her, so..

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 5:12 pm EST

Britney Spears is the most artistically, musically, socially, and politically relevant artist/performer of the last 2000 years. Anyone who disagrees is simply ignorant and uncultured.

Britney is not on the poll for “artist of the decade” because she is not an artist; she is not a musician, she is not a real singer, she is just a freaking dancer (and not a very good one anymore), and I guess that’s just not enough to be named the artist of the decade.

The Britney Spears comments are incredibly dumb. Just because she sold so many CDs doesn’t mean anything. She’s only popular because she caters to what the mainstream music lover needs. her image is manufactured and based on sex appeal, not real talent. She has never made an artistic statement in her life. End of story

Btw: I’m expecting it to be a tossup between Bruce Springsteen and U2. Though I think Springsteen has the edge with the amazing records he’s put out.

MIA? Really?

And Bob Dylan??? Thought this was a decade end list for the 2000’s not the 1960’s….

Um, guys? It’s for what WE consider the greatest music of the decade, not the most popular. And if this horribly shitty decade is of any indication, popularity does not equal greatness. So go to hell with your Britney Spears.

bluuuuurgh | 11/17/2009, 7:12 pm EST

what’s with all the retards not understanding when a decade starts and ends?

Anonymous | 11/17/2009, 9:12 pm EST

1)The Strokes- Is This it?

2) Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I am, that’s What I am not

NME almost got it right

although any album by either of these bands is ace.

Val | 11/17/2009, 10:58 pm EST

I can’t BELIEVE an act as monumental, iconic, definitive of this decade as Britney Spears has been left off the list. Like her or not, she is one of the biggest things to happen in this decade, and one of the most influential people in pop music. But whatever.

Where’s John Mayer? Norah Jones?

U2 is the best band in the world, are musically million times better than Britney and Beyoncé. They go through the decades without losing quality, because the Stones entered the process of decay. U2 is a mega band the others are just good bands (Coldplay, Oasis, The Killers …) I make a mention of Simple Minds, who also had his moment of glory and still endures, with a good work, however, already without the glamor of old.

Green Day is THE artist of the decade. They released the best album “American Idiot.” The other 2 albums from 2000-2009 include Warning: and 21 Breakdown. These two rank pretty high in the pecking order as well. Blvd Broken Dreams (song of the decade, hey what else would it be?

Anonymous | 11/19/2009, 9:58 pm EST

I love U2 but i think people are over looking the fact that their music quality is (and i hate to say it) diminshing if i wanted to listen to music that goes nowhere i’d break out obscure Pink FLoyd!

Avril Lavigne Let Go
Os fas do Brasil estao votando em “Complicated”

Ryno | 11/21/2009, 10:34 am EST

Is far as this list I would have to pick Jack White hands down. He has to much talent to just be in one band. So with White Stripes, the Racontuers and Dead Wheather he has constantly made music thoughout the decade. But the most talented never win these things.
