Joe Perry Says Aerosmith Not Breaking Up, Confirms Band Will Replace Steven Tyler

Aerosmith’s Joe Perry took to his Twitter yesterday to relay some potentially positive news to fans: despite Steven Tyler’s apparent departure, “Aerosmith is definitely NOT breaking up.” Perry also confirmed that the remaining four members of Aerosmith would seek out a new singer while Tyler did “his own thing.”

“Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!” Perry tweeted yesterday. “Band is playing hotter than ever and our songs need to be played live! Don’t despair; Aerosmith not splitting up. Promise that’s the last you’ll hear from me on the subject till we gear up again.”

Aerosmith Live: Check out photos of concerts from the past four decades

As Rolling Stone reported yesterday, following Aerosmith’s concert in Abu Dhabi on November 1st, Tyler left without talking to his bandmates, instead telling a reporter for Classic Rock Magazine that he was going to focus on “Brand Tyler. ” Perry and Tyler have been at odds in recent years over what direction the four-decade-old band should take. Perry wants to pursue a sound closer to the band’s bluesy, Seventies records while Tyler is more interested in a poppier path that brought the band hits like “Jaded” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” The tension reached fever pitch when their summer tour was cancelled after Tyler fell off the stage in South Dakota on August 6th.

In an interview yesterday with Boston’s WZLX 100.7 (via Blabbermouth), Perry said he called Tyler before the band’s recent Hawaii concerts to see if the singer had any interest in playing three December gigs in South America, but midway through the conversation Tyler hung up on Perry. “I kind of got the hint that he pretty much wants to be alone and wants to do his own thing,” Perry said. Still, Perry reiterated that he doesn’t think this is the end of Aerosmith. “As long as we’re still kicking, it’s not over. We’ll probably get bored and come back.”

Aerosmith without steven tyler is like Peanut Butter without jelly.

dave | 11/10/2009, 10:24 am EST

you might be able to replace joe perry and still call the band aerosmith, but you cant replace steve tyler and still have aerosmith.

stu | 11/10/2009, 10:29 am EST

what dave said

Lisa | 11/10/2009, 10:35 am EST

If Perry wants to go more toward their bluesy roots, I’m all for it.
A poppy Aerosmith, like they’ve been since the 90’s is tepid at best. I hate their newer stuff–they’re hardly a rock band anymore.

Hole | 11/10/2009, 10:38 am EST

Alice In Chains managed to pull it off. Lynrd Skynrd is still succesful, Van Halen had their biggest run with Hagar.
Sounds rejuvenating to me. Tyler kind of sucks now…and he is so old and frail

Hole | 11/10/2009, 10:40 am EST

Jimmy from Quincy.

Not everyone likes jelly with peanut butter. peanut butter and fluff is what Perry is going to serve now. Deal with it

Jay | 11/10/2009, 10:41 am EST

I am all for the bluesy Aerosmith, Steven Tyler or not.

Brand tyler | 11/10/2009, 10:43 am EST

I just wanted to put out some scarves and embroidered snuggies…I dont know why Joe is so upset.

robin | 11/10/2009, 10:48 am EST

Like any marriage, there are ups and downs. I am sure Tyler is upset with Perry’s lack of sympathy for him trying to put on a good show. Tyler did not fall of stage by not trying to do a good show. Think of all the other dinosaur bands phoning in their shows like Doobie Brothers, Jethro Tull. Aerosmith is legend. Perry is right, however, in that the band should do a bluesier sound. We have had enough of Journey and Styx and Chicago playing to soft crowds. U2 is able to balance both. Perry and Tyler should compromise and alternate album sounds. The next album should be bluesy, the next poppier. It does not help that Perry is GOP and Tyler liberal. They both worked hard on band and do not want to be steamrolled by the other.

Richard | 11/10/2009, 10:54 am EST

This would be ridiculous and embarrassing.

Tyler is one of the dew frontmen that is truly original and irreplaceable.

This should not happen.

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 11:04 am EST

no it wont be aerosmith without steven!! wth?

Velvet Revolver | 11/10/2009, 11:17 am EST

Steven Tyler would be a great frontman for Velvet Revolver

Oiver | 11/10/2009, 11:17 am EST

Replace Tyler? You can’t replace Tyler. There is only one.

Hillary | 11/10/2009, 11:18 am EST

This is all Obama’s fault. You should have voted for me instead and this would never have happened.

me | 11/10/2009, 11:20 am EST

this is ridiculous…

keith | 11/10/2009, 11:20 am EST

Joe & Co. Start a new band, with a new name, make a new record, and on tour play as many Aerosmith covers as you like. It’s not as if Queen without Freddie and INXS without Michael really worked. Then again, AC/DC and Van Halen (2 out of three aint bad) kept chugging…

sal | 11/10/2009, 11:21 am EST

steven tyler will make it on his own…..but aerosmith will have a hard time. It’s steven voice that makes you turn up the volume.

loveu | 11/10/2009, 11:24 am EST

Perry has his own project. Why can’t Steven do the same? The answer is cause he’s gonna be a success. He’s body and soul of Aerosmith.Without Steven,Aero don’t survive. Steven is a God of rock, and all this is good to shake who was drinking his bloud. No one moves like Steven, write like Steven and rocks like Steven, and by the way:I love his crocks!

Jef | 11/10/2009, 11:26 am EST

Uh, with all due respect, eff you Joe Perry.

I don’t care how lame Steven Tyler’s being. That’s a definite no-no douche move.

Ronnie Wood | 11/10/2009, 11:30 am EST

A lame way to go about it, but I can’t say that I blame Tyler. He’s never done anything without Aerosmith since they started; no solo records, no nothing. That’s a LONG time. I’d like to see Joe Perry do his own thing to but reforming Aerosmith with another vocalist is a really bad idea. Say what you want about Steven Tyler but he’s a one of a kind.

bates | 11/10/2009, 11:32 am EST

just get it together and move on

Bman | 11/10/2009, 11:39 am EST

I was fine with the thought the band splitting up and going separate ways. They’ve pretty much done it all… all good things must come to an end.

But replacing Tyler is a bad idea. If they do that they need to change the name or something. It would be a slap in the face to Tyler and the rest of the band’s history. Aerosmith just isn’t Aerosmith without Steven Tyler.

Jungleland2 | 11/10/2009, 11:42 am EST

This would be the best Joe Perry Protect ever

Ian | 11/10/2009, 11:42 am EST

Trying to replace Steven Tyler is like trying to replace Mick Jagger of the Stones. It not only can’t be done, it SHOULDN’T be done! Noel Gallagher left Oasis, and they called it quits because you can’t replace him in Oasis. That’s exactly what Aerosmith needs to do. They’re going to kill their already tarnished legacy.

dev | 11/10/2009, 11:59 am EST

omg i luv aerosmith but it just wont be the same wit out stven tyler!!…he makes it great they will only be gud now

Kim | 11/10/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Let them take this break from each other…hopefully that’s all it is…then maybe they will get back together and make some more GREAT music! Everyone needs a break. It will be interesting to see who they get to sing for them. Even though no one can replace Steven. But then again no one can replace any of them and be what they are together.

Mucky Fingers | 11/10/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Steven Tyler is a rock star, and wants to remain that way, even if he’s a grandfather competing with guys 1/3 his age. He wants to shoot for the top of the charts, but he should just give it up and stick what Aerosmith always did best.

christina | 11/10/2009, 12:26 pm EST

“you might be able to replace joe perry and still call the band aerosmith, but you cant replace steve tyler and still have aerosmith.”

Dave said it best!

Steve | 11/10/2009, 12:36 pm EST

I’ve got the perfect person to fill in for Steven Tyler – Ted McGinley.

Dave | 11/10/2009, 12:40 pm EST

They can call it what they want but this is a break up. That doesn’t mean that they will not get back together at some point in time. Hey at least this time they can’t blame it on a glass of spilled milk in Cleveland.

S Taylor | 11/10/2009, 12:40 pm EST

I think the dude looks like a lady, and now they are both acting like little girls! Shut the F%#k up and write a kick ass song about your issues. “USE” the emotion, “USE the anger, “USE” the moment to share your thoughts and message in your next hit! Stop being an ass! You’re a R&R Band, you bone heads talk about world peace then you do stupid shit like this! Walk This Way to a wise solution so both of your over inflated egos can stretch out over the radio waves all the way to bank! Idiots.
Great songwriters, Great musicians, no question…and yes…dumb ass bonehead, petty and spoiled idiots if they break up a band that’s gone this far. I can not believe they would be that stupid.

Adam | 11/10/2009, 12:43 pm EST

What no Tyler !! no way !

Actually I can see it wouldnt be the same but

stu | 11/10/2009, 12:45 pm EST

hire Miley Cyris… they can’t suck any any worse than their recent stuff anyways…
I liked their older stuff ok, but recently. ehh.. it was forgetable at best… I really can’t see them being successful without Steven Tyler anyways..

Change The Name | 11/10/2009, 12:50 pm EST

For the love of Pete, if the other 4 stay together, please change the name of the band! Don’t degrade yourself to Styx, Journey, Yes-level. Too many QUALITY artists have tried this and FAILED! If all you’re trying to do is collect a check, then I guess there’s no point in arguing. But, if you truely are artists….change your name!

As much as I dis-like Creed, I appreciate what Altered Bridge did!

Two words – David Coverdale

Sorry Steven, but grow a pair and make a comment. If you don’t want it, you can’t expect your brothers to stop making beautiful, timeless, solid gold rock and roll. May peace take over the demons inside your reckless soul and come back to us. Please don’t let my last image of you sitting on a patio, gacked to the nine’s, playing your mouth organ, trying to sing Pink (weakly) next to your buddy with the gay green and pink beard. Clean yourself up and get some freaking help before you end up 6 feet under. This is coming from a 41-year-old woman who adores your pipes. Your music saw me threw plenty. One of the greatest moments of my life was watching you wrap my white silk scarf with tassels around your neck. Peace brother.

Jubble | 11/10/2009, 1:45 pm EST

How about Carly Simon?

Versus | 11/10/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Aerowhat | 11/10/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Nobody is going to give a flying fuck about this band without Steven Tyler. I loved what they did in the 70s and Pump is in my opinion their best, and one of the great all time rock albums… HOWEVER… like almost all bands out there Aerosmith’s signature identity and sound is 99.9% Steven and his voice. The other guys must have egos the size of the Hindenburg if they think their generic blues rock shit will matter with some new douche trying to sing in any manner resembling Tyler. Like him or not dude is a rock legend. Interesting that it took 40 years for them to turn into genericshit Velvet Revolver + Whatever Axl’s Album Was Supposed to Be.

UpgrayeDD | 11/10/2009, 1:49 pm EST

Aerosmith hasn’t been relevent in years (decades) anyway.

bob | 11/10/2009, 1:54 pm EST

A couple of possible replacements,Mick Jagger or David Johansen.

Greg | 11/10/2009, 1:56 pm EST

Sigh…!!! While I loved Aerosmith “back in the day”, they ceased being musically significant about twenty years ago. That’s a long time boys and girls. The Who have pulled off drawing a live audience while being insignificant , but they had a better body of work to draw on. Aerosmith is meaningless, and it’s time for even hard core fans to move on.

billy wyman | 11/10/2009, 1:56 pm EST

Perry must be kidding who the hell cares about this band without Tyler. Its like the stones without Mick. They should call it a day and Perry should start a new band.

Good riddance to the arrogant douchebag Tyler. Over the last 10 years he’s been writing more and more with outside writers. that’s why Aerosmiths last few records SUCKED !

Steve | 11/10/2009, 2:02 pm EST

There should be a rule that states once any member of your band requires hip replacement surgery, you’re officially finished.

daniel | 11/10/2009, 2:03 pm EST

It’s just a rock band – if they want to take different paths – so what? Maybe something good will come out of it. At this stage, they have the luxury of being able to do whatever they want. Go for it and Godspeed ….

Nik | 11/10/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Everyone who works in the music business knows that Steven Tyler is a self centered jackass. If Joe wants to go on without him, more power to the guy. Then again, I don’t care if he tours WITH Tyler. Aerosmith haven’t put out an interesting record in twenty years.

AC | 11/10/2009, 2:32 pm EST

Aerosmith stopped being an even remotely interesting band a quarter century ago. If Tyler was responsible for horrors like “Love In An Elevator”, then I’d say “Good riddance!”

Dude | 11/10/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Adam Lamber SLAUGHTERED the Aerosmith songs he covered- NO WAY he can step in for Steven Tyler. In fact- THERE IS NO AEROSMITH without Steven Tyler. They should just throw in the towel and call it a day without Tyler.

Sally | 11/10/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Insider info says that Tyler is back on the blow/drinking heavily, hence his little accident. No wonder everyone is pissed off. Not sure musical direction has that much to do with it. Read between the lines people.

Hock Ptooey | 11/10/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Steven wants to be a douce. Later. I fully support the rest of the guys in this band not to be held hostage by his ego. Plus, an Aerosmith driven my Tyler has sucked balls. Time for a new driver. If you want more Dianne Warren tunes, follow Brand Tyler.

Joe Dirt | 11/10/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Diana | 11/10/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Wow, Steven has become so self-centered. I hate to see it, but I bet he’s on drugs again. Aww, poor Joe, at least he’s the one who’s staying true to his roots, to himself, to AEROSMITH! I think Tyler is sensational and obviously it’s not Aerosmith without him, but I’m afraid I’m gonna have to side with Joe Perry on this one.

Iluvaerosmith | 11/10/2009, 3:58 pm EST

I would not want to be the poor soul to try and fill those shoes!!!Too much criticism to have to overcome. There are too many sharks out there looking for fresh prey to devour, and this little guppy is going to get it……

Tom | 11/10/2009, 4:03 pm EST

Steven Tyler IS Aerosmith! Even though Joe’s great, Steven has always been the most distinctive musician in the band…

basser | 11/10/2009, 4:14 pm EST

Tyler is NOT old and frail, as one poster stated before. He and Aerosmith were great in Tulsa in August, despite the tour derailing several days after that gig. I stood six feet in front of the band and photographed them. They were energetic, sounded tight and were all over the stage physically. Even with Tom out (Perry’s solo bassist Dave H. was filling in), the band cooked onstage.
That being said, I think Aerosmith has the right to continue without Tyler. Yes, Tyler is the face of the band, or most of it, but it’s unfair to the other four to think about quitting since he’s out. I used to think the opposite. It’s like when Water was out of Pink Floyd in 1985. It wasn’t as good after, but Gilmour, Wright and Mason had earned the right to continue the band. We can only be purists for so long in this changing world. Those who refused to see The Who in 2000 because Keith Moon (RIP) was gone really missed a great show; heck, The Who with Pino on bass now is still a good band. It’s not 1976 anymore. There have been many rock casualties, and sometimes, people just don’t have their heart into a band anymore. If Tyler wants out, let him go (I think it’s a bad move, but it’s his right). Perry and the others can try something new. It’s a free world. Do we have to like what they’ll come up with? No. But they have the right to try.

Studio Dave | 11/10/2009, 4:16 pm EST

Aerosmith without Steven is just not right. However, Perry does have the right idea. Haven’t we all had enough of the the Aerosmith version of Bon Jovi? Go back to old school Aerosmith. It will rock! If Tyler wants to make a but load of money(which we already know he does) he should come to terms with the fact that Aerosmith, with him as the frontman is ‘the’ true American rock band. They have been at it the longest. They should go out and tour doing nothing but 70’s material. They will sell out everywhere they go and introduce today’s kids to the real rock band they are.

I met both Joe and Steven in NJ on the Permanent Vacation tour and spent nearly 40 minutes just talking to Joe. Most of the time was spent on him asking me questions and I was just a 21 year old kid. He was truely just a good person. He even went out of his way to make sure my girlfriend and I met everyone in the band, got signatures, had birthday cake(bassist birthday i think), and felt right at home backstage. If anyone is being self centered it has to be Steven. I found him to be a conceeded ass.

Steven is the frontman of the biggest american rock band who has been around for almost 40 years. Isn’t that enough? If he want to do a solo record fine, just don’t screw up a great thing in doing so. It would be moronic.

basser | 11/10/2009, 4:19 pm EST

and Greg, where do you come off saying “The Who have pulled off drawing a live audience while being insignificant” ?

Did you sleep through Halloween 2006? That is when The Who released “Endless Wire” and played a TON of stuff of that record on the 2006-07 tour. I caught three shows of that tour, with two of those nights back to back, and all three shows had different set lists. The first two shows I saw, they played about half of the new record and did, as usual, some wonderful improvisational moments thorughout the gigs. On the third show I caught of that tour, they reinstated a couple older songs and still did improv throughout the 2-hour concert. Don’t diss on The Who. “Endless Wire” and the two new singles they put out in 2004 are rock-solid stuff. I’m with you, though, on you saying The Who has a more impressiive back catalog than Aerosmith. Love Aerosmith, but The Who is tops, in the studio and on the stage. :)

No FUCKING Way | 11/10/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Wotttttttttttt!

Jack Locker | 11/10/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Have Aerosmith made any interesting record in the last few decades and could they make valid recordings with a different lead vocalist are 2 valid questions.

What I seem to notice when I come to the RS website is there seems to always be a high number of people who post who can only be described as artist HATERS. And i would venture to say that these individuals couldn’t play a lick TO SAVE THEIR LIFE let alone ever release a music record of any significance or measurable acclaim of any kind. U fcking pathetic bastards should tell all what U have done, accomplished, and current career profession. Yes, everyone has an opinion however instead of music lovers articulating praise, these blogs are over-run by an infestation of asshole like flees on a dog’s ace.

Black Hole Sun | 11/10/2009, 4:49 pm EST

If Joe and the rest of the band want to carry on as a band, fine, I’ve got no problem with that. As long as they change the name, cause Aerosmith just ain’t Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. If Joe Perry had left the band instead of Steven, it’d be the same deal. And I hope they don’t try some Aerosmith + Whatever Guy Fronting The Band crap.

NESTOR | 11/10/2009, 4:52 pm EST

S. Tyler is GOD…and Aerosmith is the HEAVEN….no way….Mr. Tyler don’t go..!!!

Edz | 11/10/2009, 4:58 pm EST

No Steve Tyler isn’t Aerosmith. Remember in the late 70’s – early 80’s after Joe bolted and Brad left soon after. They got two good guitar players but the magic wasn’t there. Aerosmith went from playing arenas to theaters to clubs and record sales plunged.

Areosmith is the sum of it’s parts. Just because Tyler is the most recognizable member doesn’t make him the most important.

Areosmith is Tyler, Perry, Whitford, Krammer and Hamelton. The public has shown once before that it will not accept any other version. Better believe that they will again.

Steve | 11/10/2009, 5:13 pm EST

If Sally is right about the blow/booze frenzy Tyler is on right now then I’d say get him back in the band and record an album right now while he’s wasted. Let’s be honest, they haven’t recorded a good album since they sobered up. It might actually be half decent, though I’m fully aware that I’m grasping at straws by saying this.

Box | 11/10/2009, 5:14 pm EST

REALITY CHECK | 11/10/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Hey 4-man Aerosmith….

Get ready for your sad future, playing half empty House Of Blues clubs, on co-headlining bills with Styx and REO Speedwagon.

Your days as a big time, arena filling juggernaut, are officially over, without Steven Tyler on board.

Way to go to piss away your legacy after 40 years, instead of retiring gracefully.

Rumor around the net is Axl Rose will be the new Aero singer! Amazing! This will take the band back into its prime and glory days! A few songs into the concert and we’ll all be saying ‘Steven who?’ Don’t turn this one down Axl!

Hunter Ambrose | 11/10/2009, 6:02 pm EST

this means that steven will come back eventually right?! he HAS to come back to sing with aerosmith sometime right?!

PR | 11/10/2009, 6:03 pm EST

Perry just wants Tyler to think that he could be replaced to call his bluff. Same thing Page did to Plant to get his goat. Guys also do this to girlfriends to get them back when they were like 14.

SMK | 11/10/2009, 6:14 pm EST

The rest of the guys should carry on under a different name. Look at all the bands who have tried to replace the only lead vocalist they’ve ever had and tried to carry on: The Doors, Sublime, Alice In Chains, INXS, Journey, etc. Not a good idea. Aerosmith without one of the founding members at this point would be beyond “nuking the fridge.” Rename the band or hang it up.

joe perry has no integrity as a band member. he is a hollywood slut like many others. he’s dissing the man who put food on his family’s table for decades. Aerosmith and the members wouldn’t be where they are now without S. T. as their front man. I can’t believe how eager joe perry is to replace his brother.

Tog | 11/10/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Aerosmith hasn’t been relevant to the music scene since they were mentioned in Wayne’s World 2. I never liked them but I can’t deny they’ve influenced modern music a bit.
The least they could do for their fans is call it quits and try not to end on a sour note.
When you put out studio albums slower than Tool, retirement isn’t a bad idea.

Jackie | 11/10/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Aerosmith has been my favourite band for 25 years, I love them, but it is not Aerosmith without Steven. I think if they go on calling themselves Aerosmith without Steven Tyler it will cheapen their reputation and people will lose respect for them. Don’t do it.

Buzz Radio | 11/10/2009, 7:52 pm EST

With out Steven Tyler, there is NO Aerosmith ……. : (

BubbaCo | 11/10/2009, 7:54 pm EST

I think Aerosmith without Steven Tyler is more like peanut-butter without peanuts.

WHO WOULD GO SEE THEM?

Josh | 11/10/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Agreed. I love watching the band themselves play, but I would rather Aerosmith (whom I’ve always been a big fan of) fully break up then not have one of the most famous lead singers in rock at the helm.

Stupid decision to continue.

Anonymous | 11/10/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Steven Tyler just did the stupidest thing in rock-n-roll history, and I hope he pays the price. Anyone who throws something like he had in Aerosmith away, is a real moron.

*Music Freak* | 11/10/2009, 8:27 pm EST

NOOOOO!!! WHY?! Steven and Joe both started the band, they should get over it and just go back to being Aerosmith: Steven (singer), Joe (guitarist), Joey (drummer), Brad (guitarist), and Tom (bassist)!!! And you people are crazy if you think they would be better as Steven gone and a new singer be there!!!! If they’re gonna do that just retire and be friends!!!! Aerosmith is like MAC ‘N’ CHEESE, perfect together!!!

Bandless singer | 11/10/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Awww… WTH is this? Whether you like him or not, there’s no Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. C’mon guys kiss and make up, you’ve stuck out 40 years so why quit now?

Bob Plant | 11/10/2009, 9:23 pm EST

Why is Tyler leaving? Is this because he auditioned for Led Zep and maybe pissed some people off? This could be similar to Eddie kicking Michael Anthony out of Van Halen cuz he was in Hagar’s band.

Orson | 11/10/2009, 9:29 pm EST

The singer(s), in this case Steven Tyler, for the most part make the sound of any band. My opinion is he can’t be replaced in this case. Sounds like Joe Perry seems to be a little full of himself and he’s not really that good of a guitar player. Best would be to work out their issues.

*Music Freak* | 11/10/2009, 9:35 pm EST

WHY?! NO FREAKIN’ WAY!!! Personally I think that they are acting immature…. Two grown men fighting over a style of music!!! But still you people are crazy if you think Aerosmith will still be successful without Steven!!! Seriously (THIS GOES OUT TO JOE PERRY!!) if you replace Steven you Should just retire and GET OVER IT!!!! Cause he’s the one and only!!! Joe might have been the best guitarist for them as far as lead goes….. But this is the important thing: Steven and Joe started the band… it’s a great band…. and why throw it away after 40 years….. THEY ARE AN UH-MAZING BAND!!!!!

WHY?! | 11/10/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Just make up and get over it!!!!
This little rivalry has been going on for 40 years…. but you still can’t replace Tyler!!!!

Stupid Move!!!!

Mykl | 11/10/2009, 9:46 pm EST

@dave :

They did replace Perry once and it failed.
This might follow the same path.

Blondie | 11/10/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Pretty sure if Steven Tyler is out, Aerosmith will lose the majority of their fans!! There is no Aerosmith without him. I don’t see why they can’t meet in the middle and do both if it really means that much to them! SERIOUSLY!!
I agree with josh, if you breakup, do it completely, don’t replace the heart and soul of the band for someone who won’t do it the justice that the band got from Steve Tyler!

Andy | 11/10/2009, 10:57 pm EST

Joe had the Joe Perry Project— but he would be living in the projects without Tyler…..get a grip!

skadi09 | 11/10/2009, 11:06 pm EST

“In 1975 this would be a big story. 2009, who cares!”

I agree with this

Yeah | 11/10/2009, 11:35 pm EST

Aerosmith IS Steven Tyler, it was his energy and his attitude and his chemistry with Joe, and even then the end product was aaalways more about Steven Tyler than the generic blues rock guitarist he plays with. I respect Joe Perry as a person and for what he’s done with the band, even though I do not respect many of his political perspectives. That said, Steven Tyler’s attitude and stage persona have been basically unrivaled for about 25 years (not the broken up drug years) and HE will remain the icon. They had better be careful with how they handle their legacy if they truly give a damn.

There’s only one ‘ya-ka-ka-ka-kow!’

manson | 11/10/2009, 11:48 pm EST

It didn’t work for motley crue and you think it will for aerosmith. You mention black sabbath and everyone talks about the Ozzy years. But I wouldn’t worry i’d say Steven will be back.

Ray Murphy | 11/10/2009, 11:53 pm EST

I saw Aerosmith with opener act The Paul Collins Beat in 1981. This version of Aerosmith was more or less the “Steven Tyler” Aerosmith because the original guitar players Brad Whitford and Joe Perry were subbed by Rick Dufay and Jimmy Crespo. I believe Joe Perry was doing his own solo thing with The Joe Perry Project. During that concert, I honestly enjoyed The Paul Collins Beat and their guitar player more than that half-baked version of Aerosmith, mainly because guitarist Joe Perry was nowhere to be found. Regardless, this concert showed me how important Steven Tyler is to the band, just as Steven Tyler is neccessary. His vocals are a HUGE party of the equation. Take away Steven Tyler’s voice and it’s hard to say if the music would be the same. Boston was able to replace their lead singer after he passed away a few years ago. Journey has again replaced their singer a few times, most recently with a much younger man who sounds alot like Steve Perry on all the songs. Nonetheless, the best solution may be for Aerosmith to go on hiatus until Steven Tyler can complete an effective rehab program which could last up to a year or more.

Reg | 11/11/2009, 12:40 am EST

Aerosmith means Steven Tyler, how can you watch Led Zep without Robert Plant or Bon Jovi without Jon.

Wow crazy Tyler | 11/11/2009, 12:46 am EST

Wow Tyler is out of his mind!!! How can he just walk out like this. And for Perry’s idea’s of doing older 70’s style music, that sounds much more exciting then more of the stuff they have been putting out.

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 12:57 am EST

Steven Tyler and Santana”Just Feel Better”….

mATTERgOD | 11/11/2009, 12:58 am EST

A disclaimer is first necessary…I have not been an Aerosmith fan. Although I appreciate classic rock as much, if not more, than the next rock fan….Steven Tyler is not one I’ve ever been a fan of. That being said, if the remaining members play good R&R with a singer who is in no way like Steven Tyler, I will buy it!
I’ve always appreciated the music, but couldn’t stand the flamboyant frontman. This has much more potential than any other major act replacing a frontman. Joe, godspeed ahead. Make the music and we will listen!

Marti | 11/11/2009, 3:00 am EST

oh no way. Aerosmith without Steven won’t be the same anymore.

Mr. Tim | 11/11/2009, 3:29 am EST

Susan Boyle would kick a$$ fronting Aerosmith

Uncle Albert | 11/11/2009, 5:11 am EST

Life just simply happens…
Things do change when you least expect them.
Heck…my girlfriend and I after 6 years have seperated and taking a breather and I never thought THAT would happen.
So things work out for a reason but it is painful to hear because you want it to last forever.
It isn’t always the case.
We can however treasure what Steven Tyler did and provided a one of a kind delivery with his voice that made so many people happy.
2009 has been a year of alot of loss and change but “It’s Not Always Gonna Be This Grey”

tim | 11/11/2009, 6:09 am EST

ac/dc did it

Woodstock31 | 11/11/2009, 7:26 am EST

Aerosmith with Paul Rodgers! I hear he’s looking for a fractured 70’s band to join… look what it did for Queen… or not… if you know what I mean.

Dave | 11/11/2009, 8:21 am EST

Steven Tyler performed with Joe Perry Last at Irving Plaza in NY. They played walk this way, and Steven assured the crowd he was not leaving the band, despite the rumors.

versedandvested | 11/11/2009, 10:19 am EST

tell me tyler doesn’t look like the gloved one in the above photo?

versedandvested | 11/11/2009, 10:24 am EST

tell me tyler doesn’t look like the gloved one in the above photo? christ.

djandy | 11/11/2009, 10:27 am EST

Aerosmith without Steven Tyler is like Fleetwood Mac without Stevie NIcks.

MB | 11/11/2009, 11:00 am EST

I do agree with Joe Perry as far as going more toward the bluesy route. I think Aerosmiths best was their earlier stuff. But at the same time I wouldnt continue the band without Tyler. That would be ridiculous and im not even that big of an Aerosmith fan to know that.

h_e_n_r_y | 11/11/2009, 11:18 am EST

anything else > Aerosmith

Beckola | 11/11/2009, 2:50 pm EST

The last great Aerosmith record was Rocks in 1976. 33 years and they haven’t come up with anything nearly as good. Going back to their roots without Tyler may actually be an improvement, but they shouldn’t call it Aerosmith.

Evil Eskimo | 11/12/2009, 10:31 am EST

Most over-rated band ever. It’s about time this shit-show draws the curtains.

John | 11/12/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Where is Tom Hamilton ? David Hull is still on bass.

Bob | 11/13/2009, 12:09 pm EST

just saw perry solo the smith tunes had life pumped back into them there is no room for stevens ego in the band more or less his worn out voice …..throw him on the scrape heap …….GPO HAGEN!!

renee | 11/16/2009, 10:04 am EST

joe has the joe perry project and is still in aerosmith.. steven can have a solo career but he needs to stick with aerosmith

Alex Segura Bruckheimer | 11/17/2009, 10:35 pm EST

Anyone replacing Tyler needs to be a REAL Number One singer. Tyler is the truest ANY Rock singer can get to be called a Rock n Roll vocalist. He´s got electric guitar strings right along his throat and no yeller Axl Rose neither soft Steve Perry can deal with that kind of flex!…We need them in CARACAS…please Steve!.

Scott | 11/19/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Aerosmith hasn’t been relative in 10 years. Their best days as a band are long since over. A Steven Tyler solo project has a better chance of being interesting than another Aerosmith tour supporting a dull new release.

demon within 78 | 11/21/2009, 4:23 pm EST

ALL RISE THE DEMON WITHIN IS IN!!
AEROSMITH HAS SUCKED FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS OR SO. IF THEY HAVE TAKEN WHAT SONGS WHERE ACTUALLY GOOD FROM THERE PAST 5 OR SO DISCS
THEY COULD HAVE MADE A REALLY KICK ASS DISC. AREOSMITH NEEDS A
PERMANENT VACATION
