Rihanna Breaks Silence About Chris Brown Incident in Emotional “20/20″ Interview

11/9/09, 1:48 pm EST

Rihanna’s first televised interview since her February 8th altercation with Chris Brown finally aired on Friday during the November 6th episode of 20/20. While excerpts of Rihanna’s conversation with Diane Sawyer appeared on Good Morning America earlier last week, the full 20/20 interview provided more details of the assault and its aftermath, including why Rihanna returned to Brown only three weeks after the incident and Rihanna’s reaction to the shocking leaked photograph of her battered face.

“I get very embarrassed, I feel humiliated. I get angry, all over again. Every time I see it, the whole thing plays back in my head,” Rihanna said of the leaked photograph that appeared on TMZ in the days following the assault. “It’s humiliating to see your face like that.” Rihanna also lashed out at those who said she must have provoked Brown in some way prior to the assault. “It’s ignorance,” Rihanna said, adding that at no point did she hit Brown. “Because even if I hit him first, that makes it okay for him to do that to me?”

On March 1st, just three weeks after the incident, Rihanna joined Brown in Miami, something she recognizes now was a “selfish” mistake because of the message it sent to her female fans. “I was still attached by love,” Rihanna said, “but I wasn’t thinking about the reality of the situation. ‘If I feel this depressed, then what is he going through?’ I had to protect him. The whole world hates him now. His fans, his career. He lost me. I just need to let him know, ‘Don’t do anything stupid.’ ” Shortly after their Miami rendezvous, Rihanna ended their relationship.

Just hours before Rihanna’s 20/20 interview aired, Brown’s own MTV interview ran in which he discussed how his life and career have changed since the incident. He cited one occasion when he went to an amusement park and people shouted things like “woman beater.” “I’m human, so when I hear certain things that they say or if I go somewhere and I hear somebody be rude about it, it’s just like, ‘Man, it’s a mistake,’ ” Brown said. “I made a big mistake. I’m learning from it. Like, I’m not saying, ‘Who are they to judge?’ because, I mean, everybody’s entitled to their own opinion on how they feel, but it hurts.”

While Brown has been reluctant to discuss what transpired in the rented Lamborghini on the night of February 8th — he said he wanted to respect Rihanna’s privacy — Rihanna didn’t hold back in her interview with Sawyer. After the 20/20 interview, Brown issued a statement saying, “While I respect Rihanna’s right to discuss the specific events of February 8, I maintain my position that all of the details should remain a private matter between us. I do appreciate her support and wish her the best. I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions.”

With the incident finally behind her, Rihanna has begun to once again focus on her career as her new album, Rated R, will hit stores November 23rd. The album has already spawned two singles, “Russian Roulette” and “Wait Your Turn,” while a third track “Hard” has been leaked online. After joining Jay-Z and Kanye West to perform “Run This Town” on the Jay Leno Show in September, Rihanna reprised her role by taking the stage in front of a large audience for the first time since February 8th with a surprise cameo at Jay-Z’s Los Angeles concert last night, RihannaDaily writes. Rihanna is set to sing at the American Music Awards on November 22. She’s also rumored to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards nominations show on December 2nd, but when asked whether this was true, a Grammy spokesperson told RS “not to our knowledge.”

Taking the stage at MSG w/ Jay- and Kanye West on 9/11 doesn’t count as a ‘large audience’?

It does not make a difference if she did something to him or not. You don’t blame the victim. We are not animals. We have power over how we react. Human beings can think and act according to morals. He could have made her get out of the car. He could have taken her home and then went home himself. He beat her face in and that was the wrong choice. The sooner Chris takes real responsibility the better. Domestic violence hardly ever has a happy ending. If help isn’t sought out some one may end up dead.

garbage on either side, non-issue!

Jeff | 11/12/2009, 7:16 am EST

@mortymort She specifically SAID she DID NOT hit him at any time or physically provoke him..and how do you justify promising “to kill” a girl and “to beat her when you get home” like she’s a child…he is just tyring to make it sound like he’s hiding something about her role, but her interview was very honest about exactly how it happened..she must have been loud or being theatrical like a typcial woman who’s being fooled so he just lost it..and THAT is the issue…loosing your temper because a woman is throwin tantrums

aurora | 11/12/2009, 10:21 am EST

i do not believe in that double standard bs that if a woman hits a man ,the man is just supposed to stand there and take it so yea rihanna,if you kept hitting him, then he DOES have the right to defend himself.he may not have the right to beat the hell out of you,but he does have the right to restain or push you down if you physically attack him first.the 1950’s are over folks.i’m a woman saying this and as i said before anyone man or woman has a right to odefend themselves if physically attacked so knock off the double standard that is being played out in the media and everywhere else and lets all keep our hands to ourselves okay kids?!

aurora | 11/12/2009, 10:26 am EST

i also would like to point out how ironic it seems that she’s finally ready to talk about what occured from her side at the same time that her new album is comming out.she is only telling her story to sell more music which i think is an insult to not just women but to anyone who is a victim of abuse.she is making herself out to be a money hungry cash ho.(will do and say anything for that extra buck)

Alexandr | 11/12/2009, 10:30 am EST

Funny how she kept her mouth shut about the whole thing, right up until her album is due to come out. Seams like Mrs.Fenty is wanting a little more exposure to promote her record.
Kind of disgusting really.

aurora | 11/12/2009, 10:39 am EST

to jeff, although we may not ever know the whole story i highly doubt that she was keeping her hands to herself i for one have been guilty for popping a guy in the mouth after hearing that that person cheated (i was 17 at the time, that was a long time ago)so i do not think that rihanna is little miss innocent and if you read my other posts i have stated that the 1950’s are over and this double standard that a man should just allow a woman to slap him around just because she is a woman needs ro stop too.the point is that we all need to control our temper and keep our hands to ourselves.i also think that the media puts too much emphasis on women being the victims and not enough on men being victims too.notice how you rarely if ever see a public service announcement ad on women beating up men but that you’ll see plenty of pa ad’s on men beating up women.the media thinks that they are helping female victims when they are really just exploiting them .why don’t they try it from a male victims point of view

dory | 11/12/2009, 11:05 am EST

these ignorant remarks make me sick…my ex-husband tried to kill me….3 times…..and it makes my stomach turn to hear things like….”he didn’t mean it”…or…”you made it up, because he’d NEVER do that”….he did it….the damage he did goes on….12 years later….to hell with chris brown’s career….he doesn’t deserve admiration..he’s only sorry he got caught, and sorry it is hitting him in his pocket…..i wish rihanna peace

Mayrse 21 | 11/12/2009, 11:06 am EST
