With Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ New York anthem “Empire State of Mind” blasting over stereos worldwide, we asked our readers to tell us what track puts them in a New York groove. Jigga, Nas, the Beastie Boys and some other Gotham natives came close, but in the end it was Long Island’s own Billy Joel and his “New York State of Mind” that our readers voted as the definitive ode to the Big Apple. To see where U2, Springsteen and the Strokes landed, check out the full Rock List below:

1. Billy Joel – “New York State of Mind”
2. Ryan Adams – “New York, New York”
3. Nas – “N.Y. State of Mind”
4. U2 – “New York”
5. Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys – “Empire State of Mind”
6. Don Henley – “New York Minute”
7. The Strokes – “New York City Cops”
8. They Might Be Giants – “New York City”
9. Bruce Springsteen – “New York City Serenade”
10. Genesis – “Back in N.Y.C”
11. Sting – “Englishman in New York”
12. Beastie Boys – “An Open Letter To NYC”
13. R.E.M. – “Leaving New York”

Spent a week in NYC last year and fell in love with it. Got engaged overlooking the harbor and went to the last Yankees/RedSox game ever played at the old stadium. Great memories.

My personal Top 5:

1. Ryan Adams
2. Jay Z
3. Beastie Boys
4. U2
5. “Across 110th Street” – Bobby Womack

It boggles my mind that Sinatra’s “New York, New York” didn’t even make the top 15. I call bullshit. Call it played out or overdone, but aren’t ALL anthems/standards to some extent?? Precisely. Can’t be an anthem or standard if isn’t played to death . . .

Daniel Boni | 11/9/2009, 5:32 pm EST

How was Interpol’s classic “NYC” not on here?
Also Snow Patrol “nyc”, booker t jones “Native new yorker”, Everclear “New york times”, Dark dark dark “new york song” and LCD soundsystem “New york I love you but your’e bringin me down” are some other great ones

Ari | 11/9/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Huh??? The Chairman never made it to the top? ‘New York, New York’ by Sinatra is THE song that comes to my head whenever I visit the city. You guys are clowns for not even having that on the list. Not to mention, it’s THE definitive NYC ode.

ray | 11/9/2009, 9:01 pm EST

TequilaMockingbird | 11/10/2009, 6:42 am EST

Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” is STILL played at a lot of events held in the city… how this got beat out by Ryan Adams (who I like, but still), I’ll never know.

matt | 11/10/2009, 9:48 am EST

frank sinatra – new york new york
interpol – nyc

Pete | 11/10/2009, 10:08 am EST

John Lennon’s “New York City”. Nas & Jay-Z rate above John Lennon Now? No wonder why Rolling Stone has been a worthless read for years now.

Meshugenna | 11/10/2009, 10:33 am EST

Richard Ashcroft – New York. Are you tuning in?

Tom J | 11/10/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Lou Reeds’ Walk on the Wild Side is a great summation of NY life. He also had an ‘89 album called New York.

Little nemo | 11/10/2009, 3:41 pm EST

wow..nice to see “Back in NYC” off the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album by Genesis recognized in top 15.

Sendog | 11/10/2009, 5:51 pm EST

This list is lame. The only song I agree with is #2 by Ryan Adams. A great song that captures the spirit of NYC. I love the grittiness of NYC. These songs capture that for me and should be on the list: New York by the Sex Pistols,Dirty Blvd. by Lou Reed, New York City by Leadbelly, Fairy Tale of New York by The Pogues, and I’ll Take New York by The Pogues.

temporary | 11/10/2009, 7:45 pm EST

“Another Rainy Day in New York City” by Chicago.

DFFD | 11/10/2009, 10:07 pm EST

No No No…you all got it wrong! The only real New York song is “New York New York” by The Dictators!!!!

And just for trivia sake, “Back In The New York Groove” was originally recorded by the UK group Hello

tom | 11/12/2009, 3:49 am EST

The Sex Pistols song “New York” was about The New York Dolls, not about the city.

tom | 11/12/2009, 3:55 am EST

You could argue The Clash’s “Koka Kola” is about NY because of the references to Wall street and the advertising agencies.

Diegotool | 11/12/2009, 11:49 am EST

And..Where’s Frank Sinata in the list?? MMm..Too Bad…Also, Beastie Boys could rank higher…but..The list is not bad at all.

dingo | 11/12/2009, 1:36 pm EST
