Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs, a drummer for indie-rock bands like !!!, the Juan MacLean and most recently Maserati, died early Sunday morning, November 8th, after falling down an elevator shaft. Fuchs was 34. LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, who once worked with Fuchs, told the New York Times Fuchs was “one of the only people we all knew who was literally great at what he did.”

According to reports, Fuchs and a friend were attending a benefit at a Williamsburg, Brooklyn warehouse when the freight elevator they were in got stuck between floors. While Fuchs’ friend made the four-foot jump out of the elevator, Fuchs’ jacket reportedly got snagged, pulling him backwards and through the crevice. Friends recovered Fuchs at the bottom of the shaft, but he was unable to speak. He later passed away at Belleville Hospital.

“Jerry was one of my best and most loyal friends. He was hands-down the best drummer I have ever played with or seen for that matter,” Juan MacLean wrote on his official Website. “He was utterly sincere and fiercely loyal.”

Fuchs recently served as drummer for the Toronto band MSTRKRFT’s performance on The Late Show With David Letterman. Watch the performance below:

Very Sad. His next show was in San Francisco performing with The Juan Maclean.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Jerry and his family. It is such a tragic loss. Still can’t believe this happened to him. So saddened.

Damn. I saw Knife Skills at the third incarnation of the club “Sine” in the L.E.S about 6 or 7 years ago… good band, but Jerry was the standout. Really just phenomenal. I never do this, but this time I had to tell him how much we liked him. He seemed like a nice guy, but I didn’t know him. I do know we lost a truly great musician.

How Sad

I knew this guy- grew up playing music with him, and he was a very dear friend. In fact, it was rare to meet someone like him in music. Amazing talent, sense of humor, and no big head about it at all. Most good drummers are assholes. Not Jerry at all. Really a good friend.

Saw Jerry perform in several bands. An outstanding drummer. He certainly had the gift, taking to a new level. I absolutely agree with Mike Haggerty, most good drummers ARE pricks. This guy had it all. He will be greatly missed.

He will be missed greatly, one of the most prolific drummers of our modern day. RIP Jerry, we’ll miss you

Most creative drummer death since Spinal Tap.

Well done, Jerry.

This is just so much to take. Although I had not seen Jerry in several years, he was the kind of guy you could pick right back up with where you left off.

His band toured with my band in the 90s and I have many fantastic memories of him.

Hands down, the most admirable drummer and friend anyone could ever ask for.

As old friends of the Fuchs family, we are shocked to hear of Jerry’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in such a difficult time. My children had a great time in NYC with Jerry, as always he was (like his family) the nicest, most warm and caring person. God bless you all, Joy, Jerry, Erica, Adam and Gretchen

I grew up 2 doors from the Fuchs and knew Jerry from the time I was in diapers. He was always about the drumming. I love playing drums as well but more as a hobby.

Jerry and I loved listening to KISS. My sister told me we used to listen to it all the time.

This was such a tragic end to a great musician’s life. He will be most definately missed.

To anonymous up there that was too chicken to use a name etc. grow up. Give him some respect.

Best wishes to all that feel the loss. I’ll be in Atlanta on Tuesday.

We have know the Fuchs family for many years and we are very sorry for their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. What a tragedy.

RIP. Sending his family and friends love.

And remember that performance from time to time as one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s not easy for a drummer to stand out as having perfect-timing and tasteful skills in a synth ensemble. He was amazing, truly. What a bummer.
