Britney Spears “Extremely Upset” By Australia Lip-Synch Controversy

Britney Spears is just two shows into her Circus Tour in Australia and she’s already the center of controversy Down Under. Reviews of Spears’ tour-opening shows in Perth were negative, with critics complaining about the fact that Spears lip-synchs during her performance. While Spears’ lip-synching is no secret to American audiences, Australia’s WA Today called Spears’ first of 14 shows “heavy on miming and light on audience interaction,” adding that she “often had her back to much of the crowd.”

Amid reports that audience members left the show disappointed — with some even walking out on the performance before it ended — the tour’s promoter Paul Dainty told The Australian, “Britney is aware of all this and she’s extremely upset by it. She’s a human being. I’m embarrassed, with such a big international entourage here with Britney, to be part of the Australian media when I see that kind of totally inaccurate reporting.” Spears’ manager Adam Leber also came to the singer’s defense, writing on Twitter, “It’s unfortunate that one journalist in Perth didn’t enjoy the show last night. Fortunately the other 18,272 fans in attendance did.”

Check out photos from Britney’s Circus Tour here.

All the hullabaloo surrounding Spears’ performance also caught the attention of New South Wales’ Fair Trade Minister Victoria Judge, who said tickets to Spears’ concerts should carry a disclaimer stating the show is prerecorded, People reports. “It is Britney’s ‘prerogative’ to lip-sync, and it is my job to make sure consumers know what they are paying for up front,” Judge said in a government-backed statement. Rolling Stone noted Spears’ lip-synched performance when the tour kicked off back in March, but that only minimally detracted from the live spectacle of the Circus show.

Yet somehow in all of this, John Mayer has emerged as the voice of reason, with the Battle Studies singer tweeting this weekend, “If you’re shocked that Britney was lip-syncing at her concert and want your money back, life may continue to be hard for you.” Spears’ controversial trek across Australia continues November 11th with a three-night stand in Melbourne.

Those same people that are shocked that Spears lip syncs are those that believe that professional wrestling is real.

You get what you pay for and the studio tricks (that make her sound “good” in the studio) don’t travel well on tour.

Suckers!

Whalespoon | 11/9/2009, 11:07 am EST

I am not a fan of Britney and have never been to one of her shows, but I have seen several clips of her live shows over the years. There is really no way that she could do those athletic dance moves and still be able to sing without sounding winded. People who think she could (or they can) are deceiving themselves. You either get live vocals or dance moves a la her videos. You cannot have both. My guess is that her fans would prefer the latter, so that is what they get.

Nice nips….er…I mean pic.

Rory | 11/9/2009, 11:18 am EST

It’s difficult for many people to just walk and chew gum let alone dance and sing at the same time. MTV and Hollywood would have you believe a performer could do 100 things at once and still sound like the CD. Sorry folks but that’s why they call it MTV and Hollywood in the first place. If you want live action with real time sound and action just go to a sporting event not a musical concert!

Jorge | 11/9/2009, 11:19 am EST

WHAT? This australian audience does never log on internet? They don’t read on news and gossips sites an well known and acepted fact: that Britney lip-synchs and everybody likes her anyway??? That’s pathetic!!!

Tom | 11/9/2009, 11:43 am EST

I guess I’ve been spoiled by artists such as Prince who can not only sing and dance at the same time, but play guitar too!

Kevin the Robot | 11/9/2009, 12:09 pm EST

I guess she won’t be releasing a live album anytime this century.

MidnightMonsoon | 11/9/2009, 12:16 pm EST

This is not exactly new, where has everybody been?

My first big concert ever was a Britney concert, eight years ago. Which in retrospect is fairly embarrassing. But even back then she was lip syncing and focusing on the dancing/staging aspects. What did people expect? The fake little pop princess was going to have her big meltdown, come back as an adult, and somehow magically have acquired genuine talent?

Anonymous | 11/9/2009, 12:20 pm EST

I’m not a fan of Britney’s by any stretch….

but she CAN sing, when she chooses too.

Watching one of her biography specials on tv, and they showed her as a child, when she appeared on Star Search. And a kid, she was belting it out!

So I know she’s capable of doing it. Not sure why she chooses not to.

Jere | 11/9/2009, 1:41 pm EST

@Tom: There is but one Prince. There will only ever BE one Prince.

Neo | 11/9/2009, 2:12 pm EST

Did you really think she could sing anyway. And John Mayer knows all about pretending to be something. He been doing it his whole career. He a Dave Matthews wannabe

shaun | 11/9/2009, 2:45 pm EST

its sick how she gets more press and attention for NOT singing live when singers like Pink put on a way better spectacle AND blow Britney out of the water on every level and still receive less press coverage. disgusting.

peter | 11/9/2009, 3:09 pm EST

sorry, but we all do know it’s impossible to make that dance moves and sing it live at the same time, just like de cd audio. she’s a performer, and obviously her voice and the way she sings is not the main and the coolest thing about her work. and you cannot be called as a FAN, if you don’t know she does lip-sync. she’s blond, she’s fabulous. this is all about being a diva. hahah love u brit! keep lip-synching and shaking that ass.

the dreamer | 11/9/2009, 4:37 pm EST

@Whalespoon and Rory:

Spare me the bullshit excuse that it is impossible to sing and dance at the same time. That is the worst excuse ever. A lot of music’s most famous artists were perfectly capable of doing just that. Hell, I can name you some modern acts that can do it. Someone mentioned Pink, she sang and swung from a freakin TRAPEZE on her recent tour, Beyonce dances harder than Britney and always sings live, Hayley Williams, the girl from Paramore bounces around onstage like a kid with ADD on crack, and never misses a beat singing. And what about musical theatre? That is EXACTLY what the actors do: sing and dance live. Unless you mean to tell they lip-sync as well?

And to everyone else, the furor isn’t that Britney lip-syncs, the Australians aren’t behind the times, it’s that they demand ANY act who lip syncs let it be known to people buying tickets to the show that it isn’t a true “live” performance, so nobody gets duped. A lot of performers lip-sync, but not everyone knows that until they fork over their money for the tickets and go to their concerts only to be sorely disappointed. Nobody’s banning lip-syncing altogether, they’re just asking that those who do it be honest about it if they’re gonna charge $1300 per ticket. And it’s only fair. I hope other countries, including America, follow suit. I’ll only spend my money on artists who actually perform live, I want to know keeps it real and who doesn’t.

To Shaun | 11/9/2009, 8:27 pm EST

Pink sucks. Your comment has resulted in automatic loss of man card.

imperfect79 | 11/9/2009, 9:11 pm EST

I think we Aussies have simply been spoiled by Pink who puts on one hell of a show and does it all live. I doubt there would be too many people going to the Britney concert that haven’t already seen the Pink one – they can’t help but be dissapointed.

Nic | 11/9/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Kudos to the Australia press. Nice try , Britney’s management , on the damage control. But hundreds of fans did leave the concert in disgust. And to those rejoicing that her first show broke P!nk’s record for attendance, Pink had an end stage while Britney has a round stage in the middle allowing for more seats. P!nk sold out 4 shows in Perth, Britney Spears sold out 1 show. P!nk sold out in total 58 arena shows. Britney Spears tickets for all the shows besides Perth are still on sale for standing as well as seating.

talkingtobrian | 11/10/2009, 10:06 am EST

for anyone who thinks you can’t be active on stage and sing – go watch some musical theatre.

And then go rent U2 Go Home (live in 2001 in Ireland) – Bono pretty much does a flat-out run around the heart-ramp stage before “Where the Streets Have No Name” and starts singing on his last step, not sounding winded at all!

Not everyone’s Bono, granted, and maybe Britney could sing at one point in her life, but modern production techniques have made some performers REALLY lazy. But you know she’s not a musician, she’s a pop star.

lazer | 11/10/2009, 11:35 am EST

what goes up, must come down…. at different times and levels….

dannnyy | 11/10/2009, 12:08 pm EST

C’mon people, you’re only defending her because she’s american,, of course, she’s your pop princess, but outside america we DO NOT appreciate a plastic chick shakin’ her butt (not even as good as madonna does), and using backtracks, people are paying her to see a LIVE show!! Well,, if that’s what her show’s all about, then she might as well end it now,

Ben | 11/10/2009, 12:39 pm EST

I’d be upset too if I spent hundreds of dollars to see that crap. There are better musicians and performers who could only dream of making the kind of money she’s pulling in. She doesn’t write her own songs for the most part, someone else does her coreography, and she’s not a virtuoso singer. Fans jumping to her defense is like arguing that HMO’s should be able to continue business as usual. Singing and dancing isn’t doable? Tell that to James Brown.

jhollywood | 11/10/2009, 6:11 pm EST

I am with Tom – there is a difference between a true artist like Prince, and a mediocre entertainer like Britney. This is what happens when we take style over substance. I imagine Britney likely lip-syncs in the studio as well. We need real musicians making real music.

AT | 11/10/2009, 7:49 pm EST

OH NO!!!! they realized I can’t really sing and left!!! boo f-ing hoo, this was bound to happen sooner or later everyone knew she lip synched live. It was just the big elephant in the room no one talked about. Honestly was anyone really surprised about any of this stuff?

MotTheWot | 11/10/2009, 9:26 pm EST

Google ‘Britney Real Voice’ posted on Youtube in 2008 and you will understand why she lip syncs her concerts….warning do not do this on a full stomach!!

Mathew | 11/11/2009, 7:38 am EST

Wait. Why do ppl in Australia want to see Britney Spears?

Anonymous | 11/11/2009, 5:27 pm EST

WHAT about PINK?????????….SHE CAN DO ALL THE THINGS BRITNEY DOES STANDING ON HER HEAD…..PLUS SHE CAN SING TOO!!!!!!…..AMAZING LIVE PERFORMER…..

Anonymous | 11/12/2009, 7:51 am EST

Britney Spears is the most infamous lip syncer in popular music. Probably why this tour seems like it sparred no expense production-wise. Britney’s one of the acts where it’s better when she’s not live…huffing it out with her live voice would only distract from the pyro and semi nakedness and dancing (the real reason people go to her shows).

It’s much ado about nothing. Just a chance for the media to get it’s weekly controversy and people on the internet to pat themselves on the back for their impeccable taste in real, non-Britney Spears music. She has her place in music and she has her fans. I’m not exactly giddy with excitement to rush out and see one of her shows, but I’ll give her credit where it’s due. And if her fans are fed up with her lip syncing, we’ll see a decline in her career…

…but not even out performing Courtney Love in the ‘fucking up mess’ department a few years ago slowed her down. I doubt miming pop songs will be her undoing a decade after she began the practice.

Aussies are not so dumb... | 11/17/2009, 8:45 am EST

I am an Australian. In our defence, it’s not that we weren’t aware that Britney lip-syncs….we are not that dim-witted. The issue that has gotten everyone so riled up is that she is not moving on stage hardly at all…so this excuse about not being able to sing live because she has to move is just crap. Pink came over, sang live and moved a HELL of a lot more than Britney with no problems. Britney is not dancing much at all, combined with the fact that people are getting to see little of her – she has had her back to the audience throughout the shows, and the camera work has been shocking – on the screens she is really no bigger than if you’re standing back halfway from the stage and viewing normally. Considering people are paying between $150 and $1500 AUD for tickets, I can see why people might be a little cheezed off…..

June | 11/18/2009, 4:23 am EST

Wow, is it unheard of to expect someone to actually sing their own songs live in concert?

What’s wrong with that?

If Britney doesn’t sing her songs live, doesn’t write her songs, doesn’t choreograph her dances, barely moves around and engages the audience then why the heck is she being paid so much? To be a talentless clod on stage?

MMC Fan | 11/22/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Christina would have sung live, and even JT, with just as much dance choreography.

Britney – Fail
