Flashback: Nirvana – Live at Reading, 1991

11/6/09, 4:22 pm EST

After 17 years, Nirvana’s incredible headlining set from the 1992 Reading Festival was finally (officially) released on CD/DVD as Live at Reading this week. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Kurt Cobain and Co. also played Reading in 1991, performing on the bottom third of the bill on the fest’s first day. Just one year later, they were headlining Reading’s third night. Since you can see all of the ‘92 show on DVD, this week’s Flashback journeys back to the band’s ‘91 Reading with a windblown rendition of “School.” Compare it with “School” from the ‘92 Reading here.

Bonus Flashback: Cobain and Dave Grohl, who also released his Foo Fighters’ Greatest Hits collection/”obituary” this week, rave about Shonen Knife at Reading ‘91:

I think I like the 91 performance better. Sure the 92 is given to us with better quality or sound and video, but 91 seems more spontanious, fun, and well… nirvana.

I was looking at Billboards top 20 songs today, it’s – Rap, Techno/Dance, and Lightweight Country Pop. Somewhere out there there’s a kid, another of The Worlds Forgotten Boys….strumming some chords on a cheap used guitar……piecing together some simple chord structures…and without even knowing it yet, bringing back the dim flame of rock and roll One More Time….and we need him…….quick.

he was happier and more enthusiastic to play!Nevermind wasn’t out yet..they were not famous and that’s the reaon why! It’s really strange watching this performance..kurt seems another person, happy to live, with the dreams of a teenager..
The next year show is totally different…he was apathic on stage..maybe on drugs..and he was worried about courtney and the shit that journalist were writing about the couple!
The success changed everything..it’s really sad..and it makes me cry..
RIP KURT

I’d like the 91 version better if the camera wasn’t centered on Maynard jumping around the stage like an anus
