On the Charts: Michael Jackson Hits Number One With “This Is It”

11/4/09, 11:27 am EST

The Big News: The King of Pop resumed his spot at the top of the charts this week. The soundtrack to Michael Jackson’s concert rehearsal documentary This Is It sold 373,000 copies to cruise to Number One on the Billboard Top 200. Jackson albums like Number Ones and Thriller have frequently hit Number One on the Top Comprehensive Charts following his June 25th death, however the albums were ineligible for the Top 200. (Regardless, Number Ones is the best-selling album of 2009.) Jackson’s last official Number One debut came with Invincible in 2001, and This Is It earned Jackson’s best first-week sales since HIStory moved 391,000 units in 1995. (Visit our Michael Jackson page for more news, plus photos and stories from the RS archives.)

Creed’s Full Circle, the band’s first album since 2001’s Weathered, entered the charts at Number Two, selling 110,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The reunited band’s previous two albums, Human Clay and Weathered, both debuted at Number One, with the latter sitting atop the charts for eight straight weeks. Taylor Swift’s Fearless celebrated its 51st week on the charts by selling another 109,000 copies, good for Number Three. Two more debuts rounded out the Top Five: Rod Stewart’s Soulbook and Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Night Castle.

Debuts: Sting’s If On a Winter’s Night entered at Number Six with 80,000 copies. Jack Johnson’s live En Concert bowed at 11 while five new LPs occupied 14 through 19: Tech N9ne’s K.O.D., the Swell Season’s Strict Joy, Wolfmother’s Cosmic Egg, Train’s Save Me, San Francisco and Atreyu’s Congregation of the Damned, all five selling within 5,000 copies of each other. Tegan and Sara’s Sainthood also hit the chart at 23.

Last Week’s Heroes: Twilight Nation couldn’t compete with the swarm of new albums and the New Moon soundtrack, which topped the charts last week, dropped to Number Eight. However, with the film due out in 16 days, the soundtrack’s sales can expect to rebound in the coming weeks. After 10 weeks in the Top Five, Miley Cyrus’ Time of our Lives slipped to 12. The Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. also fell out of the Top Ten for the first time since its release in early June, ending the week at 14.

In this space next week, we’ll see who’s the victor in a chart battle that finds This Is It facing off against Carrie Underwood’s Play On and Weezer’s Raditude.

I really enjoyed the This Is It movie.

But the This Is It cd is simply pointless.

KING OF POP!

Brian | 11/4/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Tegan & Sara really could have debuted higher, I think. I know at least where I live (Pittsburgh), their album was sold out everywhere by Thursday. I couldn’t find a copy anywhere (I looked at multiple stores, like 10 of them) and had to order it from Amazon. I mean, it IS only Pittsburgh, but I wonder if this happened anywhere else. If so, looks like they could have had a higher debut, not that 23 is bad.

Brandon | 11/4/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Michael Jackson is undoubtedly the Kinf Of Pop.

Another proof for all the haters, No Beatles, No Elvis, but King Of Pop.

Mel | 11/4/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Congrats MJ!!! I think it says a lot when people go out and buy an album with the same songs they (probably) already own instead of something new.

I love Michael Jackson and I love the “This Is It” cd which is re-mastered and it has some very good demos on it as well as 2 versions of the “This Is It” song. It also has a poem on it read by Michael called “Earth Poem” which is nicely done by him. Also comes with a 32 page booklet. Well worth the money in my opinion.

ned | 11/4/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I just downloaded Raditude – amazing album. Hopefully, a ringer for #1

Sorry Brandon,

While Michael Jackson was an amazing dancer, and an unparalleled entertainer,

much of his actual MUSIC will not pass the test of time, as the Beatles’ will.

Michael has a good handful of excellent songs, but let’s keep things real.

100 years from now, people will still be listening to Let It Be, not Bad.

dawn | 11/4/2009, 6:14 pm EST

C’mon guys, why the constant comparison between Michael Jackson, the Beatles and Elvis? Why not just admit and accept that they were all great and legendary in their own way?

How would you know???

By all indication, it is pretty safe to bet that people in every continent will dance to Thriller, in your life time, at very least.

Long live forever The king of Music

Anonymous | 11/4/2009, 8:58 pm EST

stella,

all i can say is…

Your loss!

To In 100 years? | 11/4/2009, 9:10 pm EST

I know because true art stands the test of time.

Michael’s music, for the most part, is just fun entertainment, but not art.

The Beatles’ music will live on, much in the way Beethoven, Mozart and Bach has done.

I am not disparaging Michael in any way. I fully appreciate his accomplishments.

ET | 11/4/2009, 9:11 pm EST

From Entertainment Tonight:

“According to press materials, this marks the first time since 1971 that an artist’s concert film and album have been No. 1 at the same time.”

I love Michael HE will forever live in my heart..and yes he will be remember and honored for hundreds and hundreds of years..I think longer..He is everything an extraordinary human should be; couragous, campassionate, ultra chrismatic, giving, full of love, highly intelligent, and one with GOD, andddd..a creative genius..HE WILL LIVE FOREVER IN WHAT HE GAVE US HIS MESSAGE OF PEACE AND LOVE Through his artistic genius..Thank you Michael..

We are all mortals | 11/4/2009, 9:20 pm EST

Nobody thought Carmen (by Bizet) was “art” before he died.

The opera could only feature royalties, gods, …

Only time will tell what is art, not mortals.

Anne | 11/4/2009, 9:37 pm EST

You seem to forget great epic songs like Man in the Mirror, Will you be there, I’ll be there, Earth Song, Cry, Heal the World, We are the World, History, Stranger in Moscow, They don’t care about us, Black and White and of course Thriller ect…ect..ect… You see, the legacy of Michael Jackson will leave forever. Stop comparing but appreciate all these artists and as the previous bloggers said, encrich your life by listening and really listening to Michael.

AW | 11/4/2009, 11:56 pm EST

FYI, the Beatles are on the verge of becoming the best selling musical act of THIS decade. Yes, they are now in second place, and rapidly climbing.

MJ? He didn’t even make the Top Ten

That’s tangible, true proof of their staying power.

aadhavan | 11/5/2009, 12:12 am EST

you are a big man

Rachel | 11/5/2009, 12:57 am EST

MJ will always be the best..RIP..love the music and the movie..

Jamie | 11/5/2009, 1:33 am EST

FYI….My little brother and other children that I know, know who Michael Jackson is. They do not have any idea who the Beatles are. I like the Beatles and MJ. I believe that MJ had a much wider range of fans though. I want to see where you are getting your statistics from AW. And, Anonymous, I’m pretty sure that people will be listening to ‘Man in the Mirror’ instead of ‘Yellow Submarine’ many years later. Don’t compare ‘Let It Be’ to ‘Bad’…..try comparing it to ‘Thriller’! BTW….I believe that MJ owned the Beatles!

Boring | 11/5/2009, 6:33 am EST

This only goes to show that people are sheep. As a CD, “This is It” is marginal, at best.

And it’s so stupid to compare the Beatles and MJ. Two different things. And all you idiots bashing the Beatles, your man Michael LOVED Beatles music.

@Boring | 11/5/2009, 10:07 am EST

“This is it” CD has a brochure with 36 pages of photos and a few new releases (whatever they are). It certainly appeals to MJ fans.

Both the movie and the album are marketed for fans. Sony had to fill the package with some old hits to justify the price, btw the fans did not actually appreciate the packaging.

Don’t call MJ fans sheep if their idol is not yours.

Didn’t Beatles fans just rush to buy remastered Beatles songs, what else is new?

Both camps should stop bashing each other’s idol, “to each his own”.

Nick | 11/5/2009, 11:43 am EST

The real news story of the week to me is that Creed’s comeback album bombed. I can’t stop laughing. They’ll be lucky to sell what their last album sold in its first week in its whole chart run. Quite a comeback, huh?

Deborah Ffrench | 11/7/2009, 7:46 am EST

My God, Michael.

You are so missed.

Brittney Loves Michael | 11/7/2009, 10:16 am EST

Brittney, Michael is heavily accomplished, but you are wrong on so many points, it’s pathetic.

Go learn your history, and come back when you grow up.

Also, POSTING IN ALL CAPS doesn’t make your erroneous statistics true.

Michael Jackson is one of a kind- The rest just wish they were Michael Jackson- Michael Jackson is the greatest entertainer that we will ever see in our life time. When you can show anyone with more awards, gave to charities more, is in the guiness book of world records more, who tried to change the world with their music more, who can change dance, music and the way videos are made like he did,who has broke more records than him,who treats their fans better than he did,who could make a crowd of millions, billions go crazy without moving or performing for long periods of time before even performing on stage like Michael Jackson did,Who can move their body like he did,who can leave a crowd of millions, billions speechless, fainting and moved by his messages of his songs the way he did, who invented the gravity shoe, should I go on…? Untill you can show anyone that has done all of these things better than Michael Jackson than the question of who is better should not even be asked- Because, Michael Jackson is the only one that has ever done these better- That is why Michael Jackson is and will always be the greatest entertainer that we will ever see in our life time!!! Rest in peace Michael – Gone too soon- You were the Best and you will be missed!!!

How did Ms Taylor Swift take the last award from Michael Jackson? I have no understanding how the matter was judged. It appears that Michael Jackson movie market results just three days on the market would have been enough to earn him the title since he will never earn it again and Ms Swift is awesome within her own rights and nineteen with enough ambitious and style and talent to earn many more title in her lifetime in the business she works in. I felt cheated for Michael especially since the music for the music moved to Number One; all of this with Mr. Jackson sleeping in his grave. It’s over now. But if purchasing Mr Jackson stuff and music will help him next year; well count my few dollars on his behalf. Thank you for my two cent
