With the Stooges set to return to the stage in 2010, Iggy Pop talked to the BBC about the legendary band’s latest comeback, which will reunite them with guitarist James Williamson for the first time in almost three decades. As Rolling Stone reported in early January, Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton passed away in his native Michigan after suffering a heart attack. “We’re all very sorry about Ron,” Pop told the BBC. “His spirit within the group remains with the rest of us and he is still a presence within the group without being on the physical plain.”

While Ron Asheton played guitar for the Stooges’ first two releases, he slid over to bass and Williamson took over lead guitar duties for 1973’s Raw Power, so the upcoming Stooges tour will likely rely heavily on that material. The Stooges also feature original drummer Scott Asheton and Minutemen bassist Mike Watt. “The band have been rehearsing more without me than with me because I’ve been doing other things this year. But we have been rehearsing all together more recently,” Pop told the BBC. “We’re going to be doing a one-off show in Brazil in a few weeks but the real touring starts next year.”

Williamson, who didn’t play guitar for years while working at the Technology Standards office at Sony, talked to Rolling Stone in September about reuniting with his former bandmates. “I wrote a lot of those songs and it’s my style of guitar playing,” Williamson said. “It kind of naturally came back to me.” The band is currently scheduled to perform Raw Power in its entirety May 2nd and 3rd at London’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival.

As Rolling Stone previously announced, the Stooges are among this year’s nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2008, Iggy Pop and Co. performed at the Rock Hall induction ceremony on behalf of Madonna, playing the Material Girl’s “Burning Up” and “Ray of Light.”

I love Iggy Pop. Has it really been 29 years since I saw him rock Poughkeepsie. But I just wish he would keep his shirt on these days!!!

Digableplanet | 11/3/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Super stoked, saw them at Bumbershoot in Seattle a couple of years ago, blew my mind, there’s nothing like seeing your favorite band live. Iggy you are my GOD…slash and tracks marks be damned… keep your shirt off.

Gotta play Nashville, I never got to see them play but got back into them after hearing “Gimme Danger” in the documentary “Lords of Dogtown”, went out and picked up 2 and got more to get. That stuff is as raw as you can get both emotionally and tone wise. It’s amazing that stuff even got made on a major label, it is total indie. What happened to the risk takers at the majors, wimps! They can’t put out stuff worth a nickel anymore. Look we got Shakira on the cover of Rolling Stone and she is on Epic, more style than substance. Why aren’t The Black Keys on the cover?

CANT’ WAIT! Williamson singlehandedly invented the style of sonic explosion that was imitated by thousands of bands after Raw Power. Please don’t charge 50 bux to get in Iggy….

I’m so sick of seeing these burnt-out rockers hobble around these concert stages when they should be sittin in a rocking chair on their front porch. The majority don’t hardly remember how to play their instrument or the words to the songs. They all look like they are going to a Keith Richards look-a-like contest. Most have to get back up there because they blew all their money drinkin and druggin.Anybody see Bono and Mick on stage at the EMA’s.They were practicing for that same contest.Just go home and let these new, young ,and overly talented kids take over instead of embarassing yourselves.Let them go Rolling Stone.

Who would you rather see, asstaste?

Gombus | 11/8/2009, 2:26 pm EST

“New young overly talented kids”
That’s friggin’ funny. I’d like for you to rattle off the names of just who the Hell you think that is, since in the 55 years of RnR, right now is the sorriest era EVER.

Great to see Iggy and James. Show those kids what a real rock band sounds like!
