Rivers Cuomo on Adam Lambert Team-Up, Favorite Pop Stars

Tucked in the middle of Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment track list, squeezed between songs written by Lady Gaga and producer Max Martin, there’s a tune called “Pick U Up,” credited to a surprising name: Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo. “He has the kind of voice I convince myself that I have,” Cuomo tells Rolling Stone in our new issue. The team-up is just the latest in an ongoing stream of collaborations that began with the hootenannies Cuomo hosted on Weezer’s 2008 tour.

As Cuomo started to move into a poppy direction — he tells RS he sought out everyone from Dr. Luke to Aly and A.J. — another of his collaborators, Butch Walker, told him, “I want ‘My Name Is Jonas, not Nick Jonas.’ ”

Rivers Cuomo’s Surf Wax Adventure: photos from the Weezer frontman’s RS shoot.

The results of Cuomo’s sonic exploration are all over Raditude (read the RS review here). Weezer recruited Lil Wayne for “Can’t Stop Partying,” though the two parties never met: “He snuck into the studio while I was away,” Cuomo tells RS. The All-American Rejects’ Tyson Ritter co-wrote “Put Me Back Together,” and told RS, “If I die tomorrow, I’ll have one of the biggest shit-eating grins on my face.”

Cuomo has also spent in the studio penning a song with Katy Perry, Sugar Ray (the band’s recent Music for Cougars featured Weezer’s “Love is the Answer,” a song now bound for Raditude) and Shirley Manson (”It was a master class in pop writing,” Manson tells RS). “I really like all the female pop stars,” Cuomo tells Rolling Stone. “Miley Cyrus is my favorite.”

For more on the birth of Raditude and how Cuomo managed to start a family and commune with the universe without losing his geek-rock mojo, check out the feature in our new issue, on stands now.

Black Hole Sun | 11/2/2009, 6:11 pm EST

Miley Cyrus is his favorite? Oh man, this guy is a lost case…

JLM | 11/2/2009, 6:49 pm EST

Hey a writer doesn’t have to make sense in life to be good at penning a song. We’ll see what he wrote, but if Adam is singing – it will probably be good.

SuzyQ | 11/2/2009, 6:51 pm EST

I agree Black Hole! I woke up to hear Wheezer on Letterman’s show the other night and immediately turned it off! I hope he really isn’t deluded that he sounds anything like Adam Lambert! Hope he is being facetious. NO ONE sounds like Adam!

Paul | 11/2/2009, 6:54 pm EST

Not really, Black Hole Sun…going with mainstream pop is a better & more alternative way to avoid the boredom & mediocrity that is “credible music” these days. I kind of see where he’s coming from…but then, I think the Jonas Brothers are on to the beginnings of something. Most of the whiners around here would not agree.

Damaris | 11/2/2009, 7:35 pm EST

Rivers is still such a weirdo.

I’m glad he doesn’t ever change. His energy just gets channeled in a different way.

BaubhZilla | 11/2/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Mr. Cuomo, I hope that someday you decide to get off the drugs you’re currently taking (or back on the ones you’re not taking), and start making good music again. seriously, two good albums is all we’re going to get out of you? what are you going to do when you fall out of favor with the teen crowd? You’re never going to be taken seriously again.

paulnaf | 11/2/2009, 10:46 pm EST

RollingStone must be in love with Adam Lambert and I just don’t get it does this guy deserve a post every week? How about a little love for the Allison the rocker chick or the Kris Allen the musician arranger songwriter who actually won. Adams ego is big enough without RS fawning over him like a tweenager with a crush…other things are going on out there in the world of music…get off your lazy duffs and cover it.

Marjorie | 11/3/2009, 12:26 am EST

@paulnaff -

RollingStone must be in love with Adam Lambert… Whether you get it or not, RollingStone is in love with reporting about relevant, interesting artists. Kris may be sweet, but he just doesn’t make the grade.

Drew | 11/3/2009, 12:32 am EST

@paulnaf…if u don’t like adam, then wth are u reading this article? pls google allison or kris and see what they are up to and stop whining over a decent article….nufsaid

Anonymous | 11/3/2009, 2:30 am EST

Because Adam has incredible voice, is that a bad thing thing that he is not write he`s own stuff, but will get incredible songs from other great songwriters :)
I don`t give a shit …
But Kris has a very bad voice, he can`t sing very well, my ears … Yeah by the way Kris first song was a cover and a very bad one so…

Allison is nice, but he also not wrote the songs…

And Adam has the IT factor, gay or not :)

Susan from Finland | 11/3/2009, 2:36 am EST

I am not so fond of Cuomo`s new stuff, the old one rock but now…

But i like Adam and it will be interesting to hear , what they come up to??

Cee | 11/3/2009, 2:59 am EST

@paulnaf Yes, I do believe RS has some insight that you don’t seem to have. Whether you like him or not, there are always tons of posts wherever Lambert’s name comes up. Interested in any articles from RS, better for RS. Lambert brings that interest and Adam’s fans and haters really do help their(RS) cause. No matter what & how you plead, Lambert is in a spotlight, and I predict, he’ll be there for long time to come. His massive appeal is unique animal of it’s own.

Rob | 11/3/2009, 4:55 am EST

It seems like he’s finally lost it…

Lollie | 11/3/2009, 8:32 am EST

Adam is not a rocker. He is a disco queen.

Fail | 11/3/2009, 8:51 am EST

I didn’t think Weezer could fall any further down on my list, and then I read this article. I just can’t believe this is the same guy who wrote blue and pinkerton

Oddjob | 11/3/2009, 9:30 am EST

It’s really weird that this guy who I thought was so cool when I was 14 and their first album came out… is now walking around talking about how he loves Miley Cyrus.

And I hate that he’s got rappers on his new album. The new single is great though, he should work with Butch Walker more and LISTEN TO HIS ADVICE! “More My Name is Jonas, less Jonas Bros.” Awesome!

MiMi | 11/3/2009, 9:51 am EST

I don’t even know who WHEEZER is, but I do know who Adam is, and I want to read everything about him and buy all his recordings and watch all his performances. I love RS for keeping his fans up to date.

The Truth | 11/3/2009, 11:33 am EST

Weezer died in 1996 after Pinkerton.

Cassidy | 11/3/2009, 1:39 pm EST

@paulnaf Just in case you don’t get it RS writes about Adam because he is the singer of his generation. Just like Elvis or Michael, he will be a legend. Your little Chick-fil-a Idol stole the win with his backward home state.

tired | 11/3/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Adam 14 minutes 50 seconds and counting …….

Cindy | 11/3/2009, 5:54 pm EST

This song sounded amazing from the snippets. It’s one of my front runner from Adam’s upcoming album. In fact, his whole album sounds fantastic from the snippets. Looking forward to it!

cindyl | 11/3/2009, 6:36 pm EST

Girls lol…Adam is not the singer of his generation these statements just make you sound stupid he has talent but has yet to prove he is orginal or even a serious artist… Relevant…get a grip his stlye of music was relevant 20 years ago…his first two songs are just cobbled together cliches nothing about them is original nor are they climbing up the charts or burning up the airways. His appeal is limited to his large group of diehard fans whom I am sure each one will but 10 copies of his cd just to prove he’s awesome. He will be a 1 week sales wonder unless his albums is miles better than his first two singles. Personally I am a fan of Coumo and read the article for him but LMAO reading some of these childish fan ravings …declaring him the next big thing does not make it so…please broaden your musical horizons and yes I too am puzzled by the coverage RS gives to him who is next the Jonas Brothers… oh wait..

Glittery | 11/3/2009, 8:54 pm EST

Not for Nothing all you people need to Wake Up!! Adam was the Best thing that ever hit Reality TV, His Voice is Pure, his stage presence is remarkable. He will be around for MANY years! He’s a delight to watch and listen to.his Album will be #1. and tough shit for those who don’t like him. Best thing that ever was on Idol. and he is going to be in the company of the Greats, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Etc.. Viva Adam!!! He’s adored by Young and old. Everyones just Jealous! Kris Allen WHO??? He will be a 1 album wonder. No Offense Kris, But Adam’s Talent is REAR!

chris | 11/3/2009, 9:17 pm EST

this is not a story about adam. it’s a story about rivers cuomo, a great songwriter.

Please! | 11/3/2009, 9:31 pm EST

cindyl — Just take a breath darling, your big head is swelling. You’re one of those people who like to rain on other people’s parade. Does it feel good? Now why don’t you run along and bother some other people who cares what you think.

terie | 11/3/2009, 9:54 pm EST

cindyl … what are you exactly trying to say? You seem to be incoherent and unintelligible and go off on a tangent therefore confusing one who is attempting to follow your thought process … in other words … WHO CARES WHAT YOU SAY!!!!

terie | 11/3/2009, 10:03 pm EST

BRAVO!! RS … keep the articles about ADAM coming and keep using his pic as well & you have a lifelong subscription from me. Now why not publish the tracks from his album .. snippets can be heard on amazon.com.uk and they are AWESOME!!

Bob | 11/3/2009, 11:01 pm EST

“Weezer died in 1996 after Pinkerton.”

The Truth, indeed. I never really liked Weezer very much in the first place, but jeez they are just totally awful now.

ianaleah | 11/3/2009, 11:50 pm EST

Adam wrote 4 songs on the album. his singing is extraordinary because of the crystal clear vocal tones, and multi octave range and smooth as silk be it deep chest or piercing high head, flawless.Since Lambert was asked to preform at the DLA award for Steven Spielberg and to perform at the American Music Awards and his CD isn’t even released yet- that says nuff right there for the quick thinker. Talent like his is rare, his performances are fun and he is mesmerzing even sitting on a stool and singing. Sure, Whole Lotta Love is sexy, but Lambert in a suit standing still and wetting his lips while singing ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ is just as sexy. His presence is tangible, felt, pleasurable. A magnificant performing artist at just the perfect time to give us all a lift.

cindyl | 11/4/2009, 12:27 am EST

terie lol… you and please seem to think we only to need care what you think …sorry if my posting is too full of content for you to follow…but typing in capitals sure makes you sound important…I’ll make it simple for ya his music so far has sucked.

OK, | 11/4/2009, 2:25 am EST

cindyl, Your 2 minutes is up! So move along.. right out of his blog to wherever dingy place you dwell.

alal | 11/4/2009, 3:06 am EST

blue and pinkerton: So overated its not funny. On par with jeff buckleys Grace and anything by pink. hey if we are all still talking about that bargain bin shit how about semisonic or third eye blind or tonic? all from the same period – moderatley popular, couple of good songs…. give me a break. Only agree about hannah montanna even though I watch that with the sound of

martha | 11/4/2009, 3:20 am EST

Right, Cindy, Rob, Vicky troll and cyber stock all Adam news just to post negative -repeatedly.When Adam sings ‘A Change is Gonna Come, or Life on Mars- unbeatable, brillant beautiful voice-he dosne’t need anything else. But I am a hugh fan of good old Rock and Roll and not electro/pop so I don’t expect much from his CD. Will listen to it though before final decision.I respect his magical vocals and multi-octave range and his gutsy honesty and free spirit-Now THAT is rock and roll.

me | 11/4/2009, 9:11 am EST

i think he is messing with us all. he could not go more further into embracing current pop mainstream and celebrity musicians. very odd.

unless he so desperate to remain relevant and popular.

i think he is pulling a joaquin phoenix move

lilyx | 11/4/2009, 9:27 am EST

haha.. I love Rivers for saying Miley is his favorite! Watching people get so upset over it makes me laugh. To the person up top who hoped Rivers was being facetious about sounding like Adam, he did say ‘convinced himself’. Adam’s voice is brilliant, loved every snippet I heard so far, can’t wait for the whole album!

Suge | 11/4/2009, 10:25 am EST

What do Tupac and Weezer have in common?

A: They both died in 1996

Tom | 11/4/2009, 2:35 pm EST

So RS cares about Weezer now. Even though they named Pinkerton as the worst album of 1996.

And Radititude is one of the worst albums I’ve ever listened to. It pains me to say I hate a Weezer album. I bought it because I liked the lead single and I’m a huge Weezer fan. In my teens they’re all I cared about. I was even a member of the original fan club. But I can’t believe what they’ve become.

Jenn | 11/4/2009, 4:22 pm EST

A quote from Weeaer “I was invited to sit in with Adam Lambert and watch him sing, and he was checking out the song. And as it turns out, he came up with a few ideas for it for himself, changed the melody around, suggested some lyric changes and before you knew it, I was writing a song with Adam Lambert.” Weezer also said Adam’s voice is amazing. The snippets souund phenomenal on Adam’s CD – it delivers Epic!!

Jenn | 11/4/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Opps Weezer!! Sorry.

keith | 11/4/2009, 4:34 pm EST

The new weezer album is awesome, play it loud and go for a drive. As for Adam Lambert, finally, an idol alum delivers on the hype and potential.

bukuurk | 11/4/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Hi…I am from New Zealand. Its awesome here. Who is Weezer? Are they good at Rock and/or Roll? I hope to make friends here. Redhead Kingpin is number one on the pepsi chart attack here on our best and only tv station, Tv 1

Love Mikey T.

terie | 11/5/2009, 2:02 am EST

cindyl … once again your thought process escapes me. Whatever you are trying to convey certainly does not follow the normal grammar pattern that I learned in school … may I suggest you return to yours and then post a comment that makes SENSE!!

JLM | 11/5/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Actually the 30 sec snipped of Pick U Up on Adam’s ablum is pretty awesome!! In fact his whole album sounds fantastic. Mixed genras like crazy. Adam is a rocker like Bowie and Queen but his is also fantastic at ballads, pop, electro – you name it it has the vocal chops to make it all freak’n awesome!!

meg | 11/6/2009, 12:01 pm EST

People are so weird. I like Weezer and love Adam Lambert. It’s not Adam’s fault that he is in the media so much. From Day 1 on Idol, he had the media interested. First, he is an amazing talent. Can’t dispute it. Call him a Disco Queen if you like (he won’t care) but the man can ROCK with the best of them. Steven Tyler? (listen to Adam’s Cryin’) Robert Plant? (compare any of his LIVE versions to Adam’s live Whole Lotta Love. They BOTH kill). So, why the hate just because ppl are nuts for Adam. Allison and Kris are great, too. Frankly, it’s to an artist’s advantage to have lower expectations and come in under the radar. Oh, and Mr. Cuomo is awesome in a very different way than Adam Lambert. But. . .his voice is not in the same league. He said Adam has the kind of voice “I convince myself that I have on a good day.” So, he was not saying that his singing is on a par with Adam. All in all, “It’s not that deep” as Adam says.

LMAO | 11/6/2009, 12:06 pm EST

This is all very funny to read. Yes, Adam Lambert does have to prove himself. No, everyone does not have to agree that he is other-worldly talented. Should RS cover news about him? Of course. The biggest selling mag cover of the year was Lambert’s. Let’s see what his cd is like and decide for ourselves. Meanwhile, I’ll also check out Raditude and make my own decision on Weezer’s new direction. It’s all good.

poprocks | 11/7/2009, 10:05 am EST

liked that RS us talking about Cuomo—like how he changes it up–and can’t wait to hear what he did with Lambert. Some love Lady GaGa some hate—same with every artist–i love him—i love him—AL due to his out of this world voice–i’m with Brain May and Rodger!!

sassy | 11/7/2009, 9:19 pm EST

Adam gets attention because he warrants it and he has a large and varied fan base. When I went to the Idols tour show there were Adam fans of all ages, on one side of me were two women in their late 60’s, on the other side of me a man..likely late 40’s with his daughters in their early 20’s, each of them holding up Adam signs, including the man. In front of me were two people in their 30’s. It’s not just a bunch of young teens that are fans of Adam. On the Idol tour in most of the locations, he got the loudest and most rousing applause and reception from the audience. At the concert I was at the applause and reception was very loud when Adam came out, males and females alike, and the cameras flashed constantly while he performed. I say performed, because Adam is not just a singer, he is a performer, he doesn’t just sing a song, he performs it. Adam deserves every bit of attention that the media wants to give him. I drove 14 hours total to see Adam and only Adam. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like or respect the others, but I wouldn’t have driven 14 hours to see them. I don’t declare Adam to be the next Elivs or the second coming of chr*st, but he’s got incredible vocal range and he’s a breath of fresh air. He is a true artist in every sense of the word, and thankfully some pretty big names in the music industry also recognize that. Hats off to Adam. I like Weezer, and am looking forward to hearing the tune on Adam’s cd that Rivers gets the credit on.

you | 11/12/2009, 2:23 am EST

i hope your right about rivers pulling a joaquin phoenix move. ok rivers, we get it. could you stop and go back to be a rock band again? I’m really disappointed. I can’t even listen to Weezer anymore. So if your point was to turn off your loyal fanbase to reach the Disney channel then mission accomplished!

lol | 11/21/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Rivers is nutcase, I love him.

Love Adam too. He’s not your typical AI. Aside from the obvious and the fact that he can hit every note on the guitar, he’s in control of his career & image, I respect that. Dude’s been gigging for the past 10 yrs fronting bands from metal to psychedelic just trying to break thru so it makes sense that when his mates dared him to audition for Idol, he gave it a shot. Gained himself a huge global fanbase in a year after years trying to make it; single-handedly got everyone talking, trolled their family show etc.

His band are badas.s. Smashing Pumpkin’s keyboardist Lisa Harrington, Madonna bassist Monte, Yellowcard drummer Longineu. He has musical legends on his side & others who contributed to the album or want to work w him; Slash, Queen’s Roger & May, Paul McCartney’s band, Weezer, Gaga, JHawkins, Pink, Aerosmith, Muse, Tim Burton.

“There hasn’t been anyone who’s brought that ’70s eccentric over-the-top operatic thing to a stage in a while. A lot of people on the charts are stylists, but not great singers. He’s lucky to be both.”

Honestly, I’m really f-n impressed w this album. Despite the fact that they put it together in less than 2 months, it’s solid. Turned out exactly how he described his vision months ago;

“As if a 70s time capsule blasted off into space & you’re watching it thru a holographic filter. Varied yet w a cohesive overall sound & lots of fusion.”

The album is a remix sampler for all the different directions he hopes to take in future.
