Readers’ Rock List: Ghost Songs

11/2/09, 5:39 pm EST

In honor of Halloween, our weekend Rock List was devoted to haunting Ghost Songs — or songs that just have the word “ghost” in the title. We counted the votes, and Johnny Cash’s terrifying retelling of “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” beat out other poltergeist-inspired tracks from Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Bruce Springsteen. Cash’s eerie live rendition of “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” from The Muppets Show hovers up top, and the Readers’ List of Ghost Songs is below:

1. Johnny Cash – “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky”
2. The Replacements – “Rock ‘N Roll Ghost”
3. Bruce Springsteen – “The Ghost of Tom Joad”
4. Nine Inch Nails – “1 Ghosts I”
5. Rage Against the Machine – “The Ghost of Tom Joad”
6. Pearl Jam – “Ghost”
7. Band of Horses – “Is There a Ghost”
8. Phish – “Ghost”
9. The Psychedelic Furs – “The Ghost In You”
10. Paul Westerberg – “Ghost On the Canvas”
11. Ray Parker Jr. – “Ghostbusters”
12. Smashing Pumpkins – “Glass and the Ghost Children”
13. Neutral Milk Hotel – “Ghost”
14. White Stripes – “Walking With a Ghost”
15. Sonic Youth – “NYC Ghosts & Flowers”

Deadmau5 – Ghosts n Stuff

Mr. Danny Boy | 11/4/2009, 12:22 pm EST

My picks are Depeche Mode’s ”Ghost” and for God-knows-what-reason My Chemical Romance ”The Ghost of You”. The latter really gave me chills the first time I heard it. Probably ‘cos of the video which gave it a bit of a more dramatic feeling than the somewhat over-the-top drama of the lyrics at times (all the time + Way’s obnoxious voice… very, very annoying)… Phew…

Lucky Loser | 11/4/2009, 12:58 pm EST

the ghost of you – my chemical romance

Mortimer | 11/4/2009, 2:24 pm EST

What about Morrissey’s Ouija Board, Ouija Board?

glassandtheghost | 11/4/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Great SP song… I can’t believe someone would think that RS Mag. would consider anything by MCR… whether it was called Ghost song for ROlling Stone Magazine.

Robin | 11/4/2009, 4:55 pm EST

That still nobody mentioned ‘Ghosts’ by Japan really annoys me. Probably not very known in the USA?

Andres - ECUADOR | 11/4/2009, 11:34 pm EST

COOL ——– SMASHING PUMPKINS – MACHINA / THE MACHINES OF GOD

zero | 11/5/2009, 1:33 am EST

The smashing pumpkins ROCKS¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Will Alexander | 11/5/2009, 1:39 am EST

Dear Rolling Stone,
Being a rather obscure Machina-era Smashing Pumpkins song, what a treat it is to see “Glass & The Ghost Children” recognized in some fashion or form. There is a certain surreal, hazy quality the songs in Machina have that is quite rad. Plus, seeing The Smashing Pumpkins ocupy the slot beside Ray Parker Jr. is a thrill not to be topped in this lifetime or the next.
- Will Alexander, Shelby, NC

Glass | 11/5/2009, 7:39 am EST

Glass & the Ghost Children is a sonic odyssey. So beats the final coda of a vinyl storm…

erick - chile | 11/5/2009, 8:35 am EST

glass & the ghost children, the ghost of the tom joad (ratm version). this is the great songs!

bless

The Mighty Jerkules | 11/5/2009, 9:59 am EST

“Walking With A Ghost”….Tegan & Sara version was better IMHO.

Gabriel Ronco | 11/5/2009, 12:29 pm EST

What about Sleeping with ghosts from Placebo and Hungry Ghost by The Cure??? I love it!

GlassBR | 11/5/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Glass and the Ghost Children; Best song in this list :D

joe | 11/5/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Love to see so much SP love!! Glass and the ghost children is one of my favorite songs off machina!! The reworking for the 2007 tour is phenomenal as well!

Any 1 4 U2 | 11/5/2009, 11:17 pm EST

Mike Spike | 11/6/2009, 1:39 am EST

Glass and the ghost children rules this list, The Smashing Pumpkins are the best band in the world.

rach | 11/6/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Smashing pumpkins are amazing

bluewaterboy | 11/6/2009, 10:51 pm EST

When I saw the heading I picked about 3 that I knew were going to be there.
And one, based on the RS old fart attitude, that wouldn’t be there.
“Phantom Rider”, by yes –Tokio Hotel!!!

Simon G. | 11/7/2009, 4:12 am EST

Smashing Pumpkins Glass and The Ghost Children is legendary and epic. nice inclusion.

Shopliftersunite | 11/7/2009, 5:55 am EST

Smashing Pumpkins is the best, nice to see this underrated gem from macchina getting some recognition!

But, we forgot the fantastic Eels – Friendly Ghost..

i look like some ones dead son | 11/7/2009, 6:30 am EST

the hotel is really #1

crazy gnome | 11/7/2009, 10:28 am EST

Gabriel | 11/7/2009, 12:45 pm EST

COOL!! The smashing Pumpkins ROCKS!

BryanPope | 11/7/2009, 3:30 pm EST

When I saw the title I knew if they didn’t add Glass and the Ghost Children I would never read this magazine again. Or at least send a disturbing letter. I would have loved to see the Hungry Ghost by the Cure, but I guess it’s too new. Very beautiful song though.

Marcus | 11/8/2009, 2:25 am EST

Pumpkins should have been higher ‘Glass and the ghost children’ is a masterpiece… cohesive list still ‘bar pearl jam’

Steven | 11/8/2009, 2:31 am EST

Long Live ‘Machina And The Machines Of God’ most inspired rock album of the past decade.
All Hail The Mighty Pumpkins.

“as she counted the spiders as they crawled up inside her..”

Organ | 11/9/2009, 7:38 am EST

From the moment I read the title I knew Neutral Milk Hotel would be on the list.

TSP FTW!

Mark | 11/9/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Not to rattle any cages, but I thought Glass and the Ghost Children, was one of the weaker songs from one of the Pumpkins worst albums. It is a spooky song with lots of dissonace, and contains the word Ghost in the title, but in my view the song is about C- Pumpkins quality.

Mark | 11/9/2009, 3:13 pm EST

Hello?!

What about The Bynars!!!

THE TRUTH | 11/10/2009, 10:14 am EST

Ghosts of York by As Tall as Lions

Mariano | 11/12/2009, 1:56 pm EST

Glad a song from Machina got some recognition. Very special somber noise rock album and my favourite of the SP. should ve included The Doors “Ghost Song” in my opinion.

Faster | 11/12/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Have you heard the live version of Glass and the Ghost Children from Budokan Mark? If not, you really need to.

OdinSway | 11/15/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Glass and the Ghosts Children is a great choice. An epic song. As for The White Stripes, I would have gone with Little Ghost.

riverblue | 11/16/2009, 2:36 pm EST

nice to see the pumpkins song on there…that one is an opus, not to mention the first song i ever saw them play live…

i do agree that neutral milk hotel’s song should be #1, however!

Junebugg79 | 11/19/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Pumpkins and ghosts! Can’t go wrong with that. Especially for halloween.
The Ghost of Stephen Foster by Squirrel Nut Zippers would be a much better choice than at least 3 of the songs on this list though.
