Phish Follow Halloween Show With First-Ever Acoustic Set At Fest 8

Free breakfast has become a hotel staple, but how can Phish fans be sated while camping in the middle of the scorching California desert for Festival 8? A Sunday high-noon acoustic set with gratis coffee and donuts, shaped fittingly, like the number eight.

Check out photos from Festival 8.

Most of the 40,000 in attendance (many still buzzing about the band’s Halloween monster take on the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street) straggled in to enjoy the band’s first-ever full-length unplugged set Sunday morning. The band — playing under eight red-and-black banners that hung from the lighting rig to the stage — kicked off with “Water in the Sky” and the chugging “Back on the Train.” Befitting the mellow mood, not to mention the punishing SoCal sun, fans dutifully obeyed singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio’s request to sit down because “we’re gonna play a lot of mellow tunes.”

Amazingly, nearly every one plopped on the grass, but it didn’t last long, as five songs later the band busted out a longtime fan favorite, the intensely intricate “The Curtain (With),” which closed their 2004 supposed last-ever set in Coventry, Vermont. Other highlights included a punchy “Wilson” that nicely retained some of the raucousness found in the usual electric version.

Later, Anastasio apologized for asking everyone to sit, admitting, “I have ADHD, I can’t sit either,” before closing the set with the classic “McGrupp & the Watchful Horsemasters.” The band returned for rare midday-set encore, bringing it down with a mellow “Driver” and “Talk” before finishing quietly with the delicate “Secret Smile” from their 2004 album Undermind.

It’s ‘McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters’ (no ‘r’)

The audience sat down? I can’t believe that a Phish audience would stop twirling for more than a minute.

Geoffry | 11/2/2009, 11:29 am EST

Losers.

the band’s first-ever full-length unplugged set? Do your research morons. They did the same thing at Clifford Ball in 1996 and at Neil Young’s Bridge School concert in 1998

Anonymous | 11/2/2009, 1:00 pm EST

did they do KISS ALIVE 2?

Anonymous | 11/2/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Clifford Ball wasn’t full acoustic set, just a few acoustic songs during a set

Anonymous | 11/2/2009, 4:24 pm EST

And the bridge school benefit was not a full set either.

Nick | 11/2/2009, 5:44 pm EST

Correct on the distinctions between 4 acoustic tunes at Clifford and 25 minute sets at Bridge.
Plus, it was official Phish PR which heavily billed this as the “first full length acoustic set ever”

And yes, the entire audience sat down and it was quite an amazing sight to see.

I want to download this set that they played. If anyone knows where I can get it email me at ckisskiss48@yahooo.com please!

THANKS

Well, gee, then maybe someone needs to define what exactly a “full-length acoustic set” is because when I saw Phish at the Bridge School concert in 1998 and they played 12 songs, it seemed pretty “full-length” to me. I’ll just assume it’s 18 because that’s the number of songs they played during the acosutic set on Sunday.

Esther | 11/2/2009, 11:30 pm EST

A full length set is when all the songs are acoustic. Not just some of them… All of them.

wilson | 11/2/2009, 11:59 pm EST

cliffard ball setlist
Split Open and Melt, Sparkle, Free, The Squirming Coil, Waste, Talk, Train Song*, Strange Design, Hello My Baby, Mike’s Song** -> Simple -> Contact -> Weekapaug Groove*

Waste to Strange Design was acoustic.

Checks your facts before crying to someone else to check facts.

Yes, it was billed the first ever as a marketing scheme, but that does not mean it wasn’t.

BTW, A set means the band comes out and plays then they bow and leave. The set even had an encore this time which was all acoustic.

Vintage | 11/4/2009, 12:37 am EST

I did check my facts rtfb.

I’ll give you the Clifford set because it was only a few songs, but when Phish played Bridge School (a show I was at), they played 12 songs, all acoustic. When they were done, I don’t remember if they bowed, but they certainly left. That was a full acoustic set. I don’t know what else to call it.

Even Phish.net called the Bridge School show a “single-set, acoustic performance.” I’m pretty sure they have a staff that does their fact checking.

sundays last set dope!

Vintage | 11/4/2009, 1:22 am EST

Heck Nick, If Phish PR says this is the “first full length acoustic set ever,” than it’s just gotta be true!

Jake St. Vitus | 11/4/2009, 5:04 pm EST

@Crissy: you can download the entire acoustic set (all the sets actually) from LivePhish.com. Enjoy!

Anonymous | 11/4/2009, 10:31 pm EST

lose the emotion please – who cares when or what their last acoustic set was. Just chill and enjoy the musical geniuses we call Phish

babyboo | 11/5/2009, 12:48 pm EST

lil wayne u r sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooo fuckin fine

Clifford | 11/5/2009, 8:55 pm EST

I don’t remember a full acoustic set at the Cliff Ball, mind you I was quite lit back then, especially on Day 1. Totally remember Fluffhead, though. I think.

Col. Forbin | 11/10/2009, 1:50 pm EST

The difference between the 8 acoustic set and the Bridge School set was that this was the first time it was ever done at an official Phish show. Bridge School was a show with a bunch of other artists, but this set was the first at at a Phish only showcase. It was an incredible special thing to be a part of. They really brought it for all 8 sets. The perfect weekend.

False-Vintage | 11/16/2009, 1:09 am EST

A full length Phish set is generally around 90 minutes. Something that is shorter than this, and confined to a time slot at a place where other bands are playing before and afterwards, would not qualify as a full Phish set. If the four dudes called it their first full acoustic set themselves, I’m going to listen to them, and not you Vintage. PR or not, Trey is very particular about everything concerning the band when it comes to things like this, if you’re “vintage” you should know this.

Mags | 11/20/2009, 7:13 pm EST

I’ve been to a LOT of festivals and this was by far the best organized I have ever been to.
The music was spot on and being able to attend the First Full Phish Acoustic Set was an honor. Free coffee and donuts taboot!!!
