Green Day Revive Foxboro Hot Tubs for Surprise London Show

Green Day waited until November 1st to celebrate Halloween, taking on their alternate identity — garage band Foxboro Hot Tubs — for a secret late-night show in London. The performance at the small Garage venue came just hours after Green Day’s final official U.K. concert at the city’s Wembley Stadium. For the Foxboro Hot Tubs show, the 21st Century Breakdown crew rifled through their entire album Stop, Drop and Roll and loaded Green Day rarities and covers into the two-hour set, NME reports.

On the road with Green Day: shots of the band goofing off behind the scenes.

The Reverend Strychnine Twitch, or Billie Joe Armstrong as he’s usually called, first alerted fans to the surprise show on the Green Day Website earlier yesterday. The band then posted a photo of themselves in their Foxboro garb on their Twitter page. According to NME, in addition to playing Foxboro’s entire 2008 debut album, the band also unearthed the Warning rarity “Blood, Sex and Booze” plus a track called “Supermodel Robots” from another surreptitious Green Day side project, the Network.

Keeping with the trick-or-treat spirit, after exhausting that initial cavalcade of songs, the band next performed the title song “Stop, Drop and Roll” four more times consecutively, claiming each time they’d played it better than before. The band then launched into covers of songs by the Who (”A Quick One, While He’s Away” and “My Generation,” which Green Day covered on their 1990 Sweet Children EP), the Ramones (”Blitzkrieg Bop”) and Chuck Berry (”Johnny B. Goode”) before ending the performance with a sixth rendition of — you guess it, “Stop, Drop and Roll.”

Look back at Green Day’s evolution from Berkeley punk to international superstars.

Green Day had one last surprise for England: they announced yesterday they’ll return to the U.K. for a pair of shows — one at Wembley Stadium and the other at Manchester’s Lancashire County Cricket Ground — in June 2010.

Glad to see they’re still filling big venues overseas.

I saw them a few months ago in Miami. And the place was half empty. So peculiar since their previous tour sold out down here. And I don’t think it’s the recession, as tickets were pretty cheap to start with (by today’s standards.)

They still put everything they had into it, but it was a little sad to watch their popularity decline in such a short amount of time.

Philly was jam backed in July.

Miami sucks for punk rock, that’s why.

Green Day sucks for punk rock…

Lemme gues… Chris Gaines was spotted watching from the wings?

If you think they “suck”…then why bother commenting? Just move along then. I went to their show in Orlando. The place was not completely full, but the show was fantastic. Green Day, regardless if they are “less punk” than they used to be, give a great show. I dislike reading the same old comments over and over about how Green Day sold out or are not punk. Who cares?!? I’m less punk now than I was back then too. We evolve people. It would be ridiculous to expect them to still be squatting in a rat invested heap eating top ramen. They obviously love what they do. I love what they do. Stop harping, and either enjoy or move on.

“….just hours after Green Day’s final official U.K. concert at the city’s Wembley Stadium” – Not to be pedantic but it was Wembley Arena and there’s a huge difference, the reason I mention it is that I intend to get tickets for the Wembley Stadium gig next summer and it will be HUGE. They were awesome at the O2 Arena last week and I can’t wait to see them play a huge stadium like Wembley.

I was at the secret gig on Sunday night & it was AMAZING once in a lifetime stuff. A proper punk rock gig that was about authentic kick ass punk rock. To have that much energy after playing a massive gig at wembley arena…outstanding! Foxboro Hot Tubs all the way.

Guli | 11/3/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Say what you want, but this band totally rocks when playing live, period.

Luke | 11/3/2009, 6:36 pm EST

I hope they film the show at Wembley stadium. I want another live Green Day DVD. But this time, I don’t want 5+ songs edited out.

Ghost Writer | 11/3/2009, 7:56 pm EST

@Guli: Agreed! I’ve seen them in every possible scenario: all the way at the top of Giants Stadium, Good Morning America, seats 2 sections above ground level at Madison Square Garden, and second row in a mosh pit. (Bullet In A Bible, too, of course.) All those times have been the best concerts of my life. Praying the Hot Tubs come to NY.

u think u must be a snotty kid to be known as a punk?????
i mean look at punk history.it’s has nothing to do with these things that u call punk.u must be political to be known as a punk.like green day.but nowadays everything has been backwards.they call a band like blink 182 a punk band.and the reason is that they run naked in theire videos.thats fucking stupid.green day hasnt always been political but they’ve always been diffrent than other bands.punkrock is not fucking love songs.u must talk dirt.the more u talk dirty more u r known as punk.like sex pistolz.bad religion green day

Lisboa, Madrid and Barcelona were sold out. It was amazing! Believe me, in Europe we love good music, we love Green! People in Miami prefers Julio Iglesias and Gloria Stefan.

estela | 11/7/2009, 6:29 am EST

omg! they are the most! i saw them in barcelona, i have no words to describe it!

Shelby | 11/12/2009, 11:28 pm EST

I’m so glad to see that their tour is going strong. I saw them twice this summer, once in Chicago and once in St. Louis, and both shows were sold out. They truly are one of the best live acts out there right now, and they deserve every bit of praise they receive. Being in the front row at both of those shows this summer were some of the most defining moments of my life, and I can only hope that eventually they’ll come around as Foxboro Hot Tubs, and I’ll get to experience that, too.

And for all those out there who say Green Day isn’t punk, please shut up already. I’m sick of hearing the whole “They sold out, they’re not punk anymore” argument. Find some other mall-punk band to pick on. Some of the greatest punk bands in history a la The Clash and The Sex Pistols were so huge because they were socially aware; they were relevant. They stuck it to the man and whoever else needed it. You name me a band today who is more politically and socially conscious than Green Day. And that’s not punk? Save your mindless ranting for someone else who deserves it.

Kudos to an amazing band.
