Slipknot’s Corey Taylor Admits He Tried to Sing for Velvet Revolver

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor has finally confirmed rumors that he tried out for Velvet Revolver’s vacant lead singer slot, telling Altitude TV, “I had a meeting with those guys, we did some demos together, and it just didn’t work — for whatever reason.” Since Scott Weiland’s departure from Velvet Revolver in April 2008, everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Sebastian Bach to Chris Cornell to obscure Canadian singers have been rumored to be the permanent fill-in for VR, but Taylor is among the first to reveal that he actually tried out for the job.

“It was just really cool. It was one of those things where it’s like I could have got to jam with legends, man, in my opinion,” Taylor said, adding that he’s still on good terms with the band. Slash had previously said in passing that Taylor had worked with VR, and while it seemed like Taylor might take over as lead vocalist, the band decided against it, Blabbermouth writes.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, even though Slash is currently hard at work at his own solo album, he’s still devoted to the singer search. “We (VR) know the right guy is out there somewhere,” Slash wrote in a MySpace post in August 2009. “It’s possible somebody could turn up before I do my tour and we could start working on new material sooner than later, in a perfect world.”

That would have sucked hard…as hard as Steve Guttenburg sucked me off in the bathroom stall of a Montreal queer bar circa 1987. Just sayin’ :)

StrummerJones | 10/30/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Ugh. Thank fuck he didn’t make it in.

Kay D | 10/30/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Hey Slash – what about a female singer????

Black Hole Sun | 10/30/2009, 5:44 pm EST

Corey Taylor?!?! WTF?!?!? They would’ve been far better off breaking up than to have him as lead vocalist, seriously. What next, we’re gonna find out they auditioned Fred Durst as well?

isabelle | 10/30/2009, 6:26 pm EST

that picture is awesome.

TOM SMITH | 10/30/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Geez guys, are you going to start being like Axl and taking your sweet-assed time getting anything done?

Ensixx | 10/30/2009, 9:54 pm EST

If Corey Taylor was good enough to garner their consideration as a vocalist, then I wouldn’t discredit him as a performer. Especially one comparable to Fred Durst. VR was serious enough to record demo’s with Corey, and if he were a less than competent replacement I don’t see why the band would waste their time.

Anonymous | 10/30/2009, 10:21 pm EST

did someone say AXL????

Cory Taylor is a musical genius who has studyied classical for many years and would of did the band justice…considering the rest of them are legends as well.

Bucketfoot | 11/1/2009, 6:19 pm EST

It is not a case of just ‘go get Axl’…I’m sure these guys would have gotten over the feud and reformed GNR by now but Axl has called Slash a ‘cancer’ and stated on numerous occasions that there is no way he will perform with the original line-up again…GNR Reunion = not going to happen.

d'yerman | 11/2/2009, 9:02 am EST

Why don’t they offer the spot up to Duff? So he may not be the best singer, he’s already in the band…

Vic De Zen | 11/2/2009, 1:47 pm EST

I find this to be pretty funny and unexpected! Corey can actually sing though if you’ve heard his Stone Sour band, so it wouldn’t be really odd if he did get the gig.

seriously think about it…Henry Rollins

thomas | 11/4/2009, 3:57 am EST

I definitley have terrible tastes in music.
Because VR seems to be such a popular band, and I think they sound like a bad holdover from the 80’s hair band era.
But hey, Coery can do whatever he wants. He already gave the world some groundbreaking music thru Slipknot.

jakwiant | 11/4/2009, 8:47 pm EST

wat the i think hes just fine in slipknot hes to good for a shity ass band like that anyway

monter 41 | 11/4/2009, 9:57 pm EST

slipknotu rock

Spirit Of 69 | 11/6/2009, 6:01 am EST

..maybe from japan..

Mono | 11/6/2009, 8:34 am EST

Ginger from the Wildhearts is the best singer for that band.

Tyler | 11/8/2009, 2:50 pm EST

seems to me that VR made a mistake, if anyone here actually bothered to LISTEN to Corey then they would know that he is an amazing vocalist. People just assume that he sucks because they don’t like slipknot or stone sour that all he can do is scream.

For anyone who wants to at least consider a change of heart try listening to:
(Slipknot) Circle, Danger – Keep Away, Child of Burning Time, ‘Till We Die, Dead Memories
(Stone Sour) Zzyxz Rd., The Day I Let Go, Through Glass, Wicked Game, and Sillyworld

Thanks For Your Time

damn he loves singing thats it dont worry about making fun of him. If he didnt love singing ask your self why he sings for stone sour and slipknot. Ever think he likes it and wanted to be part of another good band?

paris | 11/11/2009, 3:51 pm EST

well corey taylor is a gr8 guy and he is “brave” to admit that he tried for VR. there is no shame though…

Che | 11/11/2009, 11:05 pm EST

I think Corey Taylor would have been a great fit for VR, although hard to juggle with Stone Sour and Slipknot. I think tyler made a great point Corey can sing, another example is “Snuff.” Me being both a Corey and slash fan think it would be awesome to see both jam together at least ones!

Renee | 11/12/2009, 7:29 pm EST

After recently seeing a you tube version of Corey Taylor doing It’s So Easy with Slash I can totally see this. Oh well!

steve | 11/13/2009, 4:08 pm EST

slipknot are great but it is no shame for corey taylor trying for VR. i mean, he is very populare at the minute in slipknot and stone sour.the thing is corey taylor can sing, so he should have got the place in VR. i am not testifying im just syaing corey is a good guy and any-one who says he is a whimp then he is not.

slipknot have just realsed their new single and got reunited through thier break. with jim root and corey taylor then doing sid projects for stone sour and joey jordison for murder dolls, obviously corey would be kind board. what is the big deal with every one shocked about him trying for VR?

awnser that….: )
stay (sic)

steve | 11/13/2009, 4:11 pm EST

i also think that VR would have done good with corey taylor, why did they turn down the offer? it also says “taylor is the FIRST to admit “. i am not sure if anyone else tryied for it. i mean, it didn’t work out so not much corey taylor can do. i hope VR recuite a lead- vocalist

steve | 11/13/2009, 4:14 pm EST

Corey would have proberly got the job but there was something that didnt work. proberly that corey is more seen in slipknot as heavy metal. it might have influanced VR that they don’t wasnt a heavy metal singer in the band.

i am not particually sure what happend but i hope something happens.

nic | 11/15/2009, 2:05 pm EST
