Michael Jackson’s Final Dreams Come to Life as “This Is It” Film Premieres

There’s a moment near the beginning of This Is It, the concert film assembled from Michael Jackson’s rehearsals for his 50-show run at London’s O2 Arena, where the star’s crew of 11 carefully hand-picked dancers becomes an army 1,000 strong thanks to some eye-popping green-screen work for “They Don’t Care About Us.” Audiences in New York gasped at the sight — for the first of many times — of what would clearly have been one of the biggest stage spectacles of all time.

Look back at Jackson’s life and career, in photos.

Everyone knows why Jackson never got to bring his dream show to life, and in the days before his death many doubted he’d be able to pull off the gigs regardless. He was frail, thin, sickly; the opening shows had been postponed because the production wasn’t ready. But in the late hours of June 25th, as the public scrambled to understand what could have killed the star, those responsible for the This Is It production insisted the MJ they knew was fit, strong, persistent. They said rehearsal footage would prove it.

This Is It is proof that Jackson did still have it: the magical voice, the gravity-defying moves (most of them), the clear-headed artistic vision of one of the greatest artists of our time. The film debuted simultaneously in 16 cities last night, including Los Angeles, where Jackson’s brothers attended a screening, and several locations in New York, like a Chelsea theater where fans danced to “Thriller” in the lobby, ushers were outfitted in special This Is It T-shirts, and fans signed a memory mosaic as they shuffled out the door.

The film shows Michael and tour director Kenny Ortega building the show from the ground up — which means lots of descriptions and 3-D models of the incredible pop spectacle Jackson imagined in his head. Full songs are often spliced together from several takes from different rehearsal days, and though the film touts the footage as full dress rehearsals, there are no glimpses of any costumes and few finished sets.

But the songs — which adhere fairly closely to their original studio versions and video choreography — are crisp. “Human Nature” opens with a chilling a cappella; Jackson becomes a bad guy running from gangsters like Humphrey Bogart in an elaborately filmed segment to accompany “Smooth Criminal”; in a new staging of “Thriller,” Jackson emerges from a giant mechanical spider.

Jackson repeatedly states that he’s holding back a little as to not wear out his voice and body — one reason to explain why he didn’t always keep up with his younger and more muscular dancers, and was sometimes out of sync with the band. (The star, a notorious perfectionist, would probably cringe at the thought of his unpolished rehearsals seeing the light of day.) But at 50 years old, and more than a decade past his last big performances, Jackson still had a great performers’ spirit and skills. You got the feeling that if that empty auditorium was full of screaming fans, he’d be able to conjure some otherworldly energy. And he was generous about sharing the spotlight with his supporting cast: backup singer Judith Hill, who wowed the world at Jackson’s L.A. memorial; Orianthi, the gifted young guitarist who shredded the solo on “Beat It.”

See photos from Jackson’s star-studded memorial.

A lot of the power of This Is It is in the off-the-cuff moments, like Jackson making funky popping sounds to assist bassist Alfred Dunbar, giving advice to backup singer Hill during “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” or just molding the minutiae of his show with an auteur’s precision. Most revealing is how Michael commands and occasionally chews out band in the politest, cutest way humanly possible. (”When that door opens, start that piano! God bless you.”)

The end of every song was greeted with applause in New York, and the scene of Jackson throwing his entire body into the crotch-grabbing “Billie Jean” completely brought the house down. Needless to say, Michael Jackson fans were already singing its praises in the lobby before the credits finished rolling at one Brooklyn theater as “new” song “This Is It” — credited to MJ alone and not co-writer Paul Anka — played.

“Loved it. I’m going on Facebook and saying OMG. This is MJ at his greatest,” said Brooklyn second grade teacher Denise Green. Her friend, Bronx school safety agent Sandra Pires added, “I could watch it again, even if I have a 6:30 roll call.”

Look back fans’ tributes to the King of Pop.

Brooklyn actor Kenya Brome was first in line, arriving two hours in the dribbling rain, wearing a full red-and-black “Beat It” jacket. “I thought it was a fabulous experience. I cried during a lot of it. I danced in my seat,” she said. “I’m glad he was happy with the way they were going with it. It was comforting. I’ll always miss him and I’ll always love him.”

I am so glad and happy that I saw this film. I’ve loved his music, but I could not say I was his fan until I saw this film. I used to be annoyed by some images the media provided us, but somehow deep down, I knew he is genius and a great entertainer, so I wanted to see this film to form my own opinion based on my own observation.

This film shed new insight on him. I can say proudly I became his fan. I was mesmerized by his total commitment, energy, creativity, passion and his professionalism. His music and dance are current and it was hard to believe he is 50! I witnessed him on the screen how he is humble and has gentle spirit. Now I am convinced that he will be remembered for many many years to come as a true artist. He is greatly missed. I will buy this DVD, for sure. Thank you, Michael!

from the audience | 10/28/2009, 10:31 am EST

As put by MJ himself: Art, good art never dies.

He’s a true artist, a perfectionist. He never failed to prove his professionalism.

Never enough has been said about his talent, his magic, his contribution and inspiration.

He’s the one and only, there will never be another.

Thank you for the music and the fun, Michael!

What a voice! What a show! Like always, like now, like forever …

WTF?!? | 10/28/2009, 10:42 am EST

he looks like a livin’ zombie :S it’s so sad what happened to Michael…

WA | 10/28/2009, 11:22 am EST

Question to WTF?!?: Did you make this comment after you see this film? I don’t think so. Don’t make a harsh judgment based on your preconceived notion. There was no “livin’ zombie” moment in that movie. He is skinny but had a full of vitality!! But I agree that it’s so sad what happened to Michael.

Brian | 10/28/2009, 11:58 am EST

What a great movie! I loved seeing Michael at work, creating his art and developing his vision. You got to see the lovable, humorous side of him too. A great tribute to a true master.

Delvin | 10/28/2009, 1:40 pm EST

I haven’t seen the movie, but if it’s a tenth as good as the concert I saw on the “Bad” tour, then it must be well worth seeing.

ENOUGH | 10/28/2009, 4:30 pm EST

It was never proven that he abused ANYBODY, so shut the fuck up about that already! If that’s all you have to say you’re obviously a stupid douchebag who just says things for shock value. In other words, a complete idiot. Go do something useful, like walking out into traffic or something…

Lu Galasso | 10/28/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Looking forward to catching this movie. Should be interesting.

Black Hole Sun | 10/28/2009, 5:48 pm EST

What’s sad is that most of today’s twenty-something “musicians”, and I use that term loosely, can’t do squat when they’re onstage, they just either stand there or walk back and forth like a disoriented person and either lip-sync or sing horribly, and then you have this 50-year-old guy who died just a few weeks later, performing a million times better than most of today’s, and again I use this term loosely, “artists”. Like him or not, you cannot deny his special talent that so very few people are blessed with. There are some seriously talented musicians out there, but unfortunately they’re not getting the attention that idiots like Britney Spears or the Jonas Brothers are getting.

Anonymous | 10/28/2009, 6:16 pm EST

Michael was enormously talented.

But I have two problems with him.

First, his lack of instrument ability. (People claim he played several instruments behind the scenes… I’ve yet to see any proof.)

Also, it’s hard for regular people, like myself, to identify and relate to Michael Jackson. And the We Are The World/Heal The World songs that tried to spread a universal message, were so banal, and obvious. I like my music to be a little more clever than that.

Not a hater, and I appreciate what he means to others. Just doesn’t mean that much to me, personally.

Well_said | 10/28/2009, 6:24 pm EST

“All that singing and dancing, he was doing it for real. And all these people, all these pop stars today, they’re not really singing onstage and they’re kind of prancing around — there were no Pro Tools then, there were no singers prancing around with wireless mics, not singing. They’re faking it, he was real… The best performer in the world is Michael Jackson…
Every artist … has been somehow been touched and inspired by Michael Jackson. You can’t be a performer today, or any day, that sets foot onstage and didn’t watch some of those performances, some of those videos, some of that magnetism, some of that whatever about him, and put that into your own show. If they’re saying they aren’t, then they’re lying.”

samantha | 10/28/2009, 6:46 pm EST

child abuse,drug abuse. your hero

brian | 10/28/2009, 6:50 pm EST

they used a double so a lot of the movie wasnt even him.

Christina Ihler Madsen | 10/28/2009, 6:56 pm EST

to samantha and jose, maybe you should get your facts stright, before judging somebody! Read aphrodite jones’s conspiracy… It is based on FACTS, and is writen by a woman who was actually in the courtroom, then you will realize why he was aquitted on all charges! You’ll realize who the real victim was!

About the Movie: This is a beautiful and honest documentary! Filled with music, genious, humor and truth! Michael only got more brilliant with age, he was strong, commited og simply amazing! The world was cheated, this would have been the greatest show ever, had he not been taken away from us. He really out did even him self on this one!

freemanrockin | 10/28/2009, 6:56 pm EST

havent seen it yet, probably never will, seen him live before 20 minutes of great stuff then evening proceeded to become a bore. i was filming his concert from my balcony then after the first 20 minutes he just became an ordinary performer. even had lots of children with him for his finale. robert plant held me to my seat for 2 hours man, michael had me interested for only twenty minutes at most.

Christina Ihler Madsen | 10/28/2009, 7:03 pm EST

to brian: Have you even seen the movie? I have and no one can do what Michael did except for Michael himself! THAT WAS MICHAEL!
Stop reading and beleaving trash! Use your life on something better!

Paula | 10/28/2009, 7:14 pm EST

I truly believe MJ is the greatest artist. “This is it” just confirm he was in an excellent creative moment. It is a shame we couldn`t see his genius live one more time.

LoopGuru | 10/29/2009, 12:17 am EST

The only thing I object to is the name of the movie. “This Is It” was Michael’s vision of the finished product. What we have here is “This Is The Beginning Of A 20-Year Cash Register Firing Up”. The Beatles and Jackson tunes showed up on commercials before he was even cold. Michael was indeed a perfectionist, perhaps pathologically so; methinks he would disapprove of most of the film.

burnt pizza | 10/29/2009, 12:48 am EST

it’s not a valid criticism of this movie to say mj wouldn’t have approved of it. had he known he was going to be dead he either would have approved or would have changed things around where he wouldn’t have died. anyone watching this movie can see it’s only rehearsals and can leave it up their imagination how much better the finished project would have been. for rehearsals this shit is brilliant.

Patra | 10/29/2009, 3:21 am EST

I saw the movie and all I can say is that MJ was the best and will always be the best. We miss you Michael!!

scottypyppenn | 10/29/2009, 4:03 am EST

i love you michael and i will always miss u

kristian | 10/29/2009, 5:48 am EST

This Is It is a brilliant movie about the genious of MJ. I was amazed by his voice – it had not lost anything and the vocals sounded very good. He reminds me of James Brown who also was on stage “until death” and did always his best on stage even in his 70s. MJ was an old scool hard-working artist. He just can’t sing without dancing, it comes so naturally from him.

f**ck U... | 10/29/2009, 8:49 am EST

….Samantha.
you’re so pathetic, so sad, so stupid

aquiarius | 10/29/2009, 9:19 am EST

im a year older than michael. a certain age usually haunded with ailments. seeing him do his thing during the rehearsal inspires me alot. were both singleparents. and it was really amazing that he hadraised his children so well. just do not know why some people are judgemental.

posture | 10/29/2009, 9:31 am EST

From what I saw in the film the THIS IS IT tour was going to be an amazing show but what I took away from the movie was how normal MJ seemed. Soft spoken yes but otherwise he behaved very much like one of the guys. It’s a nice balance from all the tabloid stories that have burnt in a sensational image of MJ into our consciousness.

musiclover | 10/29/2009, 10:29 am EST

loved the movie – a must see. awesome!

julie amohanga | 10/30/2009, 9:30 am EST

i think we missed out on one of the best musical productions ever to be staged.I’ve seen the “Bad” and “History “tours but they were nthing like “this is it” appeared to be.His mind was sharp, his body was no thinner than any other time,he kept pace with everyone. No way could he have performed day after day with an ongoing addiction to sedatives…Murder or Manslaughter..that;s the only conclusion

anon | 10/30/2009, 9:26 pm EST

anonymous: MJ had his own God given instruments: His voice, his body, his arms and legs, and brain. Who said you have to be an instrumentalist to be a brilliant musician? This movie was great. If he was this great in rehersals, that concert would have been off the hizzle.

He was way too thin, but thats “hollywood”, only yes men/woman need apply. Yup Ortega was seriously brown nosing, and so was that bald dude..wots his face..who turned up at the premier with a MJ/like/not studded monstrosity and no shirt, and oh yeah, he got Associate Producer Creds. If they were not so busy kissing MJ’s ass he’d be in London right now putting on a “Thriller” Halloween show.

I will love MJ till the day I draw my last breath. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!!

Anonymous | 10/31/2009, 4:42 am EST

This is it! This is the movie everybody should see. Remember, this is only a rehearsal but what a rehearsal. I saw this show in Johor Bahru, Malaysia in the daytime so there wasn’t many people around and the theater was too quiet for my liking. How I wish I am in New York or London where I understand everyone is up and dancing and cheering and singing in the theater. BTW, the female guitarist was awesome.

Old Man | 10/31/2009, 7:13 am EST

Quite sad to see some of the vicious comments about a great performer who was indisputably a great artist. Who cares what he “Might have been” he is dead & deserves to be remembered for his talents & influence on pop music. Why throw stones at someone who cannot throw back?

freemanrockin | 10/31/2009, 6:43 pm EST

HE WAS A GOOD PERFORMER BUT CERTAINLY NOT GREAT. GREAT DANCER IS WHAT I CALL HIM

Anonymous | 11/1/2009, 3:07 am EST

THIS IS IT WAS AMAZING! NO ONE CAN MOVE LIKE MICHAEL NOT JUSTIN USHER NO ONE MICHAEL WAS THE ONE

Samantha2 | 11/2/2009, 9:29 am EST

Michael was a hell of a singer and dancer, no doubt about it. But he was also a child molester….plain and simple.Do any of you so-called fans really believe that ANY 50 year old man would go on national TV and state that he shares his bed with kids has never molested any of them? If you do,….then Bernie Madoff wants to help you with your financial investments. Would any of you pay a kids family 20 million dollars to shut them up and keep from having to go to court? Even with as much money as he had, a innocent person would want to go to court and clear his name, even if it cost more than 20 million. Like i said, Michael was a hell of a performer, but he was also a sick pervert….and he needed help…..mentally…..and declaring him the King Of The World is not the kind of help he needed. He should be rememberd for his singing, and his dancing, but it should not be forgotten that he WAS a child molester.

DawnSpirit | 11/2/2009, 10:36 am EST

Samantha, the District Attorney and a whole bunch of police tried their damnedest to find evidence that he was a child molester and failed … twice. Michael was a great performer but he was also human and fallible. If he had been a child molester there would have been some proof but there was nothing.. and please don’t try to claim that they didn’t look hard enough.. they went over his home with hordes of police and the only reason they didn’t find any proof is because there was none … because he was innocent.

Secondly, when a child molester is unmasked in public, you will always see a bunch of other people speaking up and saying “He molested me too” because child molesters don’t stop at one or two kids… they abuse hundreds. Think of what happened with the Catholic Church and child molesting priests. Now, given all the children Michael had access to, why didn’t that happen when he was publicly accused?

Because there WAS no child abuse … there were just some greedy and unscrupulous parents who exposed their children to some unholy publicity in the process of trying to extract money from their cash cow. In doing that, THEY were abusing their own children.

But you aren’t really interested in truth. You just want to make yourself feel good by putting someone else down when they aren’t around to defend themselves. Good luck with that … I hope you’re not planning on entering any popularity contests any time soon.

MichaelFanFromThailand | 11/2/2009, 12:18 pm EST

He was the best world over in music industry as no other artists in the 70s, 80s, 90s and well into this century could match him. In fact, after having seen him on screen, he is now even better than the best. He’s gone but his music on this film brings him alive. You could feel him, touch his spirit, come close to him as a human being on stage.

I don’t think anyone could come close to him as an artist at least in the next couple of decades.

jenny | 11/2/2009, 12:47 pm EST

This is it was brilliant to see, Michael looked well and full of energy and stamina, he also looked so happy, oh why did he have to be taken from us. Please stop running him down you people who are doing it, he’s gone now, he can no longer defend himself and thats not fair. He was found completely innocent so there is no arguement, Michael would not have hurt anyone, please leave him alone in peace now, love you Michael.xxx

KYSHEA | 11/2/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I LOVE U MJ! U THE BEST!

Samantha2 | 11/2/2009, 4:19 pm EST

“DawnSpirit” you are just in DENIAL……or a complete idiot. You don’t pay off a family with 20 million to stop the rush, that just entices it. If you are not guilty…..you nip it in the bud…or in the butt in Michael’s case.

DawnSpirit | 11/2/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Samantha … If you had looked into the details of the case, you’d know that all he wanted was to make the horror go away … he realized he had made an error of judgement and taken the wrong lawyer’s advice later.

When he did go to court for the second case, he was found innocent by the people who listened to the witnesses and looked at the evidence. Yet you think you know better than all of them. Nice ego problem you have going there.

However, as I said before, you’re not really interested in the truth, only in making yourself feel superior to others. With all that hatred and prejudice festering inside you, you must lead a poisonous little life.

I realize that answering your puerile arguments won’t achieve a whole lot, since you’re stuck in your little hate groove … but do realize that your words tell the world a whole lot more about you than they do about Michael or anyone else.

dark&lovely | 11/4/2009, 3:36 pm EST

well, well, well Samantha wonder who made you the district attorney of the USA or the leading authority on child abuse? maybe you have some inside scoop from members of your own being that informed you about the details on child abuse…any close at hand nightmares leaking from your brain? judge not…you may find yourself judged.. in your case silence is golden… shut your pie hold missy..

dark&lovely | 11/4/2009, 3:39 pm EST

samantha …you should pay 20 million for being a idiot in the USA.

Samantha2 | 11/4/2009, 4:06 pm EST

But MICHAEL, NEVER DID! So just Shut up and live ok? Thnx Hun!

Denise | 11/5/2009, 4:27 pm EST

I wish everyone would just let Michael rest in peace. He is not here to defend himself so please leave him alone. Let us please remember him as the pure genius that he was. His music and dance has brought millions of people so much pleasure over the years. I thought the movie was fantastic. It was made very clear to everyone that this was a rehearsal and boy what a fantastic one it was. His music will live in our hearts forever and I for one will never forget him. It was great to see him perform again but so sad that he didn’t get the chance to perform it live to all of his loyal fans. You will be sadly missed Michael. God love you x

mmarinam7 | 11/12/2009, 11:14 am EST

Michael was too good for this world. The people who think he was a child molester are just ignorants, they cannot understand that there are people who feel and think differently than them. They cannot understand that when he went to bed with those kids, it was like when I’m going to bed with my own sister. It’s their mind that is disturbed. Michael was an angel.

It is amazing how people that hate the guts out of Michael Jackson feel they have to come on a site that is designated for him. I find this so strange, so obviously they are either in denial or just plain assholes, but whatever people the best thing is to ignore them all cause to me they are just to birdbrainy to even acknowledge. So to the real fans on this site, This is it was the most inspiring, breathtaking, music film or any other film to that matter I have ever watched, no fiction, no horror, no action etc. has had me so focused for the entire length of play, he was the best, will always be the best and no one out there can ever be like him,not in his talent, not in his simple humbleness not in his very human nature. A brilliant man, gone to soon and you should all ask yourselves why? You all should know the answer to especially seeing these same hating bitches on this site, there were too many around ready to destroy him. But he was just unbreakable! God bless him, love him more.

Ligaya | 11/14/2009, 9:53 am EST

It’s one thing if people who believe Michael’s a pedophile did their homework & checked the other side – MJ’s an innocent victim of extortion. But I bet no one has. ANYONE DECENT will check @ least one source below in ea. of the allegations.

Regarding the Jordie Chandler allegation which was settled:

1. “Was Michael Jackson Framed? The Untold Story,” Mary A. Fischer, GQ, October 1994, buttonmonkey(dot)com;

2. “Bury the Never Ending Myth of Jackson as Child Molester,” Earl Ofari Hutchison, July 8, 2009, huffingtonpost;

3. Redemption, Geraldine Hughes, legal secretary for Barry Rothman, Dr. Chandler’s lawyer, who witnessed the set-up.

Ligaya | 11/14/2009, 10:00 am EST

Michael ACQUITTED ON ALL COUNTS in the Gavin Arviso trial:

1. Michael Jackson Conspiracy, Aphrodite Jones.

2. Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland (DVD) by Larry Nimmer (some excerpts on YouTube).

3. On Michael Jackson, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic for NY Times Margo Jefferson.

Deborah Ffrench | 11/15/2009, 5:11 am EST

A way will be found to fully vindicate fully Michael in time, but it must be remembered that telling the truth is hard to do for some people, especially when they know they would effectively be opening the door to the media’s gaze. I ask all of us now to do stop buying into the thought that we are powerless – and instead, do something very powerful.

An intention has been set in effect. And everyone who wants to, is being asked to ‘Hold The Vision’ of this intention:

‘That the truth of Michael’s integrity and the innocence of his relationships with children will be unequivocally proved and known by all – in our lifetime.’

When you think of Michael, re-affirm that intention in your mind and in your heart. Put all the desire you have for the successful unfolding of this vision into this intention. If the millions who love Michael do this daily, we will do more to affect change than we ever knew possible.

Sassy Lass | 11/16/2009, 5:23 pm EST

Michael was a beautiful, loving, compassionate, gentle, giving soul. There is no way in hell he molested children. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I can honestly say Michael did not show the signs of a true molester. I believed he was innocent and always will. He was the greatest entertainer ever and will remain that way. I saw This Is It. Wow, what a true professional he was, and a wonderful human being. Wish I could have met you Michael. We had very similar upbringings. Sadly, nobody stood by you and helped you with the pain. How sad!! I was so looking forward to your concerts in my hometown London. Grew up with you since I was about 4. Will love and miss you forever MJ xxxxx

Sassy Lass | 11/16/2009, 5:27 pm EST

I will buy the DVD “This Is It” when it comes out. Seems so hard to believe you are gone, but sadly, nobody helped you in your darkest hours. How sad that a beautiful human being suffered in silence, while everybody took from him and took advantage of his gentle and generous nature. He did so much for charities and gave so much of himself. Let us remember this, along with his phenomenal music, singing and dancing. At 50 he still had it! A true legend in every way. RIP Michael! Wish the media would leave him and his children alone. For crying out loud he is dead. Let him rest in peace and let his kids have time to grieve and grow.

I had the pleasure of seeing “This is It” last night, and I was amazed about the show he was putting together. After watching the movie, I was thinking to myself…How can he physically do that for 50 Nights? It certainly would have been the best music show ever. It was great that they filmed the rehearsals. It certainly gave all of us a good insight about what his tour was going to be like. He was and is certainly a Genius!
