Can Shakira Conquer the World?: The New Issue of Rolling Stone

When Shakira released her bestselling single “Hips Don’t Lie,” most listeners never knew that the phrase originated in a fairly chaste setting: the studio. “I would say, ‘Hey, do you see my hips moving?’ ” she says, explaining how she tests out potential tracks. ” ‘No? This is not working. My hips don’t lie.’ ”

Shakira’s sexiest moments: from belly-dancing with Beyoncé to howling in a cage.

The 32-year-old singer’s famous hips have been a good barometer of success in the past. She’s sold 50 million records worldwide and earned over $100 million, but as she prepares to unleash her third English album, She Wolf, the Colombian-born singer is at a crossroads. In Rolling Stone’s new issue, on stands today, Shakira tells Vanessa Grigoriadis about the pressures of becoming a true superstar in the U.S. now so she can indulge a “physical calling” soon: “My body feels like it is asking to reproduce,” she says, revealing that a baby could be in her post-She Wolf future.

To meet that goal, Shakira hit the studio hard for She Wolf, and gave Rolling Stone an up-close look at her coffee-fueled sessions at the Bahamas’ Compass Point Studios, a location she chose specifically for its rock & roll cred. “I am such a huge fan of Bob Marley, the Cure and AC/DC, and when I heard about this legendary studio where all of them recorded, I knew I had to be here,” she says. For a close-up look at Shakira’s RS cover shoot, check out this exclusive footage from the streets of New York:

But even an album as meticulously planned as She Wolf can hit a snag. Find out why the album’s release date got bumped back, how Lil Wayne wound up on Shakira’s new Timbaland-produced song “Give It Up to Me,” why she refuses to marry her beau of nine years, and more about her ongoing oral fixation in our latest cover story.

Also in this issue: how Rivers Cuomo grew up without losing his geek-rock mojo and a close-up look at Lenny Kravitz as he gets back to basics. Go behind the fall’s freakiest tour — Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball — and hop in the studio with Alicia Keys as she sculpts The Element of Freedom. Plus, Naomi Klein on the only way to stop global warming and L. Christopher Smith on the epidemic of murders at the nation’s third-largest Army base.

Hole | 10/28/2009, 9:59 am EST

Ok…in all seriousness if this lady looked like Kelly Osbourne she would not be on the cover. Her music is pretty bad. She Wolf? More like She craps 4 times a day.
Move on…

Shakira is UNIC!

Darren | 10/28/2009, 10:32 am EST

If her body is smart enough to ask her to reproduce, why doesn’t it ask her to stop singing like Pee-Wee Herman?

david | 10/28/2009, 10:35 am EST

Chuck Klosterman | 10/28/2009, 12:47 pm EST

That you guys have Shakira on your cover and not Joel Plaskett only further documents how out of touch you are. When will your advertisers learn that no one reads this magazine anymore?

I love her, great cover.

Privateer | 10/28/2009, 2:47 pm EST

She’s lovely and can dance. But she can’t sing worth a damn. It’s sad to see Rollimg Stone becoming another “Seventeen” or teeny-bopper fan-zine.

Shakira's male slave | 10/28/2009, 2:48 pm EST

I am Shakira’s male slave. Shakira and I will have sex totally in the nude on purpose in private only with Shakira’s permission. To see Shakira totally in the nude on purpose is my all-time #1 favorite way to see Shakira. I really really am madly deeply continuoulsly passionately and romanticly in love with Shakira. I really really love enjoy crave honor cherish respect and obey all of Shakira from head to toe. I really really do care about Shakira. I really really am concerned about Shakira. Someday Shakira and I will meet each other on purpose. I am a true fan of Shakira. I also am a huge fan of Shakira. Shakira is my babe,my honey,my love,my boss and my future wife. And I will get the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine with the sexy picture of Shakira on the front cover of it in my mailbox soon.

gaga rules | 10/28/2009, 2:51 pm EST

oh she’s preatty but in this photo she looks like Madonna on her Ray of Light video

O'Brien | 10/28/2009, 2:51 pm EST

It’s a shame she’s concentrating on “becoming a true superstar in the U.S.” instead of becoming the best musician she can be. Another manufactured, semi-talented wannabe. Sigh, where are all the real artists?

John | 10/28/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Shakira is hot, but she stinks as a singer and musician

Kanoa | 10/28/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Re: Shakira’s male slave

Shakira… RUN!

ieva | 10/28/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Shakira is amazing, and I can see from the video that photoshoot will be HUGE. Good luck Shaki, ur the best <3

JEFFERSON BR | 10/28/2009, 4:09 pm EST

SHE IS PERFECT!!!

NickBatt | 10/28/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Im colombian descendant and I can tell this sell-out wannabe is a disgrace for colombian people. She represents the semi talented girl that sold her soul (and probably her body too) to the corporative media.

erick rosas | 10/28/2009, 4:46 pm EST

yes of course, she can conquer the world, she is amazing, she has a voice, style, composer, she had everything

andres | 10/28/2009, 4:50 pm EST

she is nice is the better single in the world

andres | 10/28/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Good luck Shaki, ur the best <3

Lucia Ramirez | 10/28/2009, 4:53 pm EST

She is a worthy ambassador for her country Colombia. With his music helps thousands of poor children can study and build a better future

misha gamois | 10/28/2009, 4:59 pm EST

She is an exceptional woman of great goals. What has been achieved thanks to their effort and love what you do, which is reflected in the love for his foundation Pies Descalzos, from where she helps thousands of Colombian children who have no economic opportunity to succeed.

TheKovalsky | 10/28/2009, 5:12 pm EST

She’s playing probably on everything and writing such good lyrics. Each song and album in other style. Looks like a goddess and she dances like that. Helps kids in Colombia. What i can say more…

I just can’t get you out of my head
Girl your lovin’ is all I think about
I just can’t get you out of my head
Girl it’s more than I dare to think about

She’s got the kind of look
That defies gravity
She’s the greatest cook
And she’s fat free

She’s been to private school
And she speaks perfect French
She’s got the perfect friends
Oh isn’t she cool?

She practices Tai Chi
She’d never lose her nerve
She’s more than you deserve
She’s just far better than me

‘Cause you know that baby I
I’m your biggest fan,
I’ll follow you until you love me
Papa, Paparazzi
Baby, there’s no other superstar,
you know that I’ll be
Your Papa, Paparazzi

Promise I’ll be kind
But I won’t stop until that girl is mine
Baby, you’ll be famous, chase you down until you love me
Papa, Paparazzi

She’s the best

No compromises | 10/28/2009, 5:38 pm EST

I like Shakira THE ROCKER, not Shakira THE POP STAR. What happened? She dyed her hair blonde and ditched her guitar for cut-out leotards and lame dance moves. She totally sold out. I would’ve been more impressed if she conquered the English world without turning herself into the typical blonde, cookie-cutter pop star. And her music keeps getting worse. “She-Wolf”? Really? I’m disappointed. It’s always sad to see an artist you like for being unique turn into something not unique in exchange for fame money.

jacob | 10/28/2009, 5:51 pm EST

woowwwwwwwwwwwwww shakira a love her she is so good. i love her new look she always look fresh…….. she is not scare to try new thing’s

i love shakira….,,,,,,,

Vamos nena eres la no.1 PERO POR FAVOR QUITATE LA ESTUPIDA IDEA DE TENER UN BB ES ABSSURDO SI EN VERDAD APRECIAS A TU PUBLICO Y TU CARRERA NO LO AGAS:
PD: SHAKI ERES SEXY, SEXY.

RandyE352 | 10/28/2009, 6:02 pm EST

To answer the question, ‘Can Shakira Conquer the World’, nah, her music is too ethnic, it doesn’t cross enough boundaries. But yea, I’m a Shakira fan. Her multitalents make her a great entertainer, but her perspective is too narrow to grab the whole world’s attention.

Cola21 | 10/28/2009, 6:24 pm EST

Because Rolling Stone posed this question, I will give her music just a little bit more attention.

But at this point, my question in return is: Why does Rolling Stone feel the need to pose such a ridiculous question? Our society goes through pop stars like floss. The idea of “conquering the world” just doesn’t seem interesting to me anymore – the same basic question has been posed about Kings of Leon, Lil Wayne, probably Muse at one point in time. What does it mean? Is it a testament to musical quality or to hype? I’m not saying any of these artists are good or bad…I don’t think that’s the question anymore. Why is Rolling Stone in the game of unwarranted hype? All I know about Shakira lately is that everone loves “She Wolf” because she crawls around like a stripper in the video. That’s not musical talent. That’s appealing to base male sexual fantasy.

What does that have to do with music? I’m tired of this crap. Whether Shakira is talented or not, it seems all about “Can Shakira turn enough men on that the world will fantasize about sleeping wither her?”

Put that question on the magazine’s cover.

Cola21 | 10/28/2009, 6:28 pm EST

And…I’m sorry. A magazine cover with that temptress breast-exposure? Maybe the least original and least scandalous concept. I wish Rolling Stone would grow up again. How many of the recent covers have had some obscene pose of a woman? I’m not a prude, but I’m reading the magazine for music, not for a boner. My dad, a Deadhead and unmatchable music fan, has resorted to just tearing the covers off. How depressing of a fall when Rolling Stone used to be famed for their cover shots and for their photographs throughout the magazine? Bring back the class.

Jhon | 10/28/2009, 6:48 pm EST

u’re such a gr8 singer luv ya you’re not like lady CACA or Pigney spears u’re a trully artist!!

Joseph | 10/28/2009, 8:52 pm EST

I see all the negative comments on here and I just laugh. Shakira deserves to be on the cover of this magazine way more than some other people. (Adam Lambert, Paramore, come one). Shakira has made a good name for herself. She is not a SELL OUT, she is a very very smart woman. Her music reflects current music. She is innovative. She Wolf may not be the best song, but the album is great. I can assure all of you that you will hear a lot more about her in the months to come.

Conquer he world??????????? ya still ask that question? She already conquer the world along time ago, or who sang on the world cup 4 years ago???? Yeah, maybe Britney or gaga or some of this blondies are bigger and have better music – but do they help their people??? Shakira has a program called piez descalzos in Colombia where they build schools for poor kids, wich most of them don’t have parents and she provides them with food and a education. Truthfully the question should be, Can Shakira compete with britney or gaga? The answer is yes, and who cares if shewolf is a bad record she’s hot, talented, and helps her people.

FunkyMF | 10/28/2009, 9:27 pm EST

Please just make a TEEN ROLLING STONE for stories like this. Dead Weather? Them Crooked Vultures? The Heavy?

billy | 10/28/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Go shaki! And don’t listen who don’t appreciate you… they don’t understand anything about music!!

Um…who is Shakira?

latina americana | 10/29/2009, 10:43 am EST

When I first heard Shakira’s music she was only singing in Spanish and she was compared to the Latin version of Alanis Morrissette. I wish she could bring some of that sound and feeling into her english music.

There is plenty of free porn on the internet, can exposed breasts really sell magazines anymore? Shakira is a marginal talent, Rolling Stone exalts in marginal talent because the world at large is infatuated with marginal talent. I won’t deride Rolling Stone, they are in touch with the zeitgeist, and the zeitgeist craves vacuous stupidity. Your hips don’t like, neither does my gag reflex. I’m exited to see which airbrushed wonder makes it on your cover next. Matt Taibbi is the only reason I read your magazine anymore. Just wait until 17 offers him a better deal!

SHAKIRA IS A BORDER-TALENTED??? Someone who sold over 50 millions records??? Are we going crazy????
She’s incredibly talented! She has lots and lots of things to say, and she says them in her particular and original way! Maybe you don’t like her music. It can be so, the world is beautiful because it’s so various. But please, don’t be heretic by saying Shakira has got no talent!

LOVE YOU SHAKIRA...!! | 10/30/2009, 8:31 am EST

PROUD OF ALL YOUR EFFORTS TO HELP CHILDREN…..!!!!
GOD BLESS YOU, You are an ANGEL..!!

“She is one of the most successful women in the music industry. She has sold out arenas all over the world, and gives much of her time to charity. Shakira is certainly worthy of a Rolling Stone cover!”

Like I said, people embrace mediocrity and it does not surprise me that she sells out arenas, there are legions of people searching for their missing chromosomes who happen to converge at said arenas. Everyone has lots of things to say, everyone says them in their own way, who cares! Here voice is an annoying bellow with no dynamism, her music is a boring fusion of pop and pop rock with the requisite ethnic spin, but none of the elements are done well or in an original way. She is a mediocre talent, but in a world where American Idol is the barometer of talent mediocre is enough. You couldn’t go to one black church in America without finding at least two women who could sing better than her. All of you have bought you bubblegum, rot your teeth and enjoy!

I’m starting to think that my IQ is equal to the aggregate IQ of all Shakira supporters. Somehow that makes me feel better. Though it also means that Naomi Klein’s article will probably be met with a great deal of consternated grunting and possible smearing/tossing of feces. Naomi, on behalf of those of us who will read you article on a bench in a bookstore as opposed to buying the magazine, I apologize for the evacuative affect your contribution might have on the frustrated masses who stumbled upon it while looking for airbrushed photos of Shakira for onanistic purposes. One hopes the amount of methane released during said mass evacuation won’t add an ironic dimension to your article on Global Warming. Thank you and good night.

Her last album flopped with her “own” music so she bought a song by Wyclef to save her. Now she relied on others to write all the music and she’s still flopping. Time to retire!

shakirafan?ch | 11/2/2009, 2:31 am EST

i actually took the time to read every single comment on here, which is sad,but i am procrastinating. I have loved shakira since i was 6 years old and her music makes me happy period.however i understand that in life people change, sometimes for the better, the problem is i don’t know if this change by shakira is for the better. if she really is doing this to explore her art form further so be it, but if she was coaxed into doing this by her record company then i will say this as a die hard fan NO! she would sell even more records if she just went back to her roots, mainly her truly first 2 albums(pies descalzos, donde estan los ladrones). it is possible perhaps that she is just doing it to gain more revenue and in turn she can donate more to worldly causes, she is after all a very intelligent person. either way everyone knows and accepts the fact that she will finally take some time off and focus on her personal life. after that i feel that i should voice the opinion of your loyal fans and try to go back to your roots at least lyric wise, this wish now forming from a 16 year old girl who adores you.

FROZEN FIRE | 11/2/2009, 4:25 am EST

I think Shakira WAS a great artist in the beginnig of her career, but lately it has been crap after crap after crap! Her latest disgrace…”give it up to me” featuring lil wayne. Just when I thought she couldnt produce a worse song than “hips don’t lie” she proved me wrong, really?? She is now singing with a low life drugged, gangster, rapper lil wayne??? Shame on Shakira for giving into fame and not staying true to her music and soul, but I guess the shine of money can change anyone right? like she said in one of her songs “It’s all right if the planet splits in three, CAUSE I’LL KEEP SELLING RECORDS…”

I don’t hate Shakira by any means but I couldn’t even make it halfway through this article. I understand she has a new album coming out but do not feel the story behind it is cover worthy. It would have been better as a feature or something like the excellent Pink article a few issues back. But I digress.

Are you guys kidding? This woman can´t sing even if her life depended on it. Her songs and lyrics are drab, anachronistic, soul less, commercial garbage. She ripped off Alanis in her early days and she’s done the same with Coldplay and countless other artists recently. RS get your heads out of your asses and put deserving people on your cover…

Mike | 11/4/2009, 7:25 am EST

Shakira certainly has conquered the world. She’s actually duped whoever is a fan. Same overrated belly dancing, fan blown hair, with glazed eyes and voice thats more annoying than an alarm clock.
Rollingstone should put up Miley Cirus on the cover since you don’t cover real musicians anymore.

Pamela | 11/4/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Shakira is a very talented artist. It isn’t the first time she has been on the cover of Rolling Stone. Okay she has changed a bit but what is wrong with change. Credit to her for the difference she has made in peoples lives. I hope Shakira comes to New Zealand. As for the people putting Shakira down what’s your point. No need to insult others.

bh in ut | 11/4/2009, 4:39 pm EST

I read the entire piece in this issue. It was hilarious, it was like a “Spinal Tap” version of the life of a diva.
From the longing look at the ocean from the car and how she has been so busy she was not able to enjoy the beach to the descriptives of her getting into her own music like a possessed woman. It was hilarious. The whole docu drama piece of the “we don’t have a hit, we need a hit” with her rep from Epic, so they stop the date when the CD is going to drop to get a song working with a rapper on the CD. Kudos to the writer this was very visual expose with the feel of a Saturday Night Live skit meets Monty Python’s “Meet The Rutles”. You would think with all the great pictures at Compass she would be able to do her own “Back in Black”. LOL. I like Shakira, I admire her tenacity, but with sampling tidbits of music from deepest Columbia for her next album, it’s like Peter Gabriel meet Britney Spears. Maybe if she wants to make something real instead of “She Wolf” with the overgrown vagina representation she needs to do what Sheryl Crowe did and sit down with some real writers that she can trust for real advice, not suits with blackberries, and meet every Tuesday night over coffee with guitars and notebooks and learn what it means to write quality music from the very root of what you are about. When Sheryl Crowe came out from that experience she was ready for a long career with well established roots rather than just Michael Jackson’s back up singer. I can watch Shakira all day, it would be great if her music was as great as her presentation. Think Elvis “Suspicious Minds”, presentaiton plus the ability to make people feel like the song “is” your life and they can connect to that.

Rock N Roll Junkie | 11/5/2009, 8:27 pm EST

Shakira isn’t that great…a few songs here and there but nothing major…who should have been on the cover?????? try a band/artist with actual talent… *sigh* music is just on a downward spiral.

I am reading these comments and I am thinking seriously? Rolling Stone advertises itself as a “Popular Music” magazine. And guess what?…THIS IS POPULAR MUSIC NOW! Why is this so hard to understand! Pop songs constantly top charts. Despite whatever you may believe about the merits of pop music, it is the top dog right now. If you do not like it, do not get it. Shakira IS a good artist, she does have a unique voice and wicked dance moves. Just because you do not like the music does not mean that it is bad. (I do not like Taylor Swift, yet I recognize she is a good artist.) I think if some of you took the time to go through her entire collection you might be surprised with the breadth of genres there. Times change, roll with it. :)

Wow shakira is soooo pretty, Rolling stone.. Come back to mexico…!!!

bh in ut | 11/6/2009, 2:02 pm EST

to “fan” according to what you are saying “pop” music is the gauge for Rolling Stone, and this is where it is at, I don’t think Rolling Stone would have had a pop artist like Britney or Miley or Shakira back in the day, that would have been on Tiger Beat or somehting. Rolling Stone was about the music culture not pop culture. You wouldn’t have movie like “Almost Famous” wihtout those days. You would have had The Hudson Brothers or Bobby Sherman tlaking about their lates endoresment deal with Marshall. Rolling Stone would be irrelevant without its legacy and perceived value to music culture.

p diddy | 11/6/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I don’t care what anyone says. Shakira keeps getting more attractive every time I see her.

mreo | 11/6/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Shakira SUCKS! She appeared on SNL recently and both tunes SUCKED. Her voice SUCKED. She just gyrated her hips and body and posed for the camera. She’s all image and no talent. Just like in the Mexican/Spanish Soap Operas my mother watches. Stupid waste of space. I guess any woman baring her belly and Tig Bitties for the camera is called “talent” these days. Shakira SUCKS.

Dan | 11/6/2009, 5:16 pm EST

After carefully listening to the whole record on youtube I must say its a good record and I plan on buying it…those that don’t like it or her should just stay away and save your nasty comments for a better day;-)

Until now I have not been moved enough to buy any of her stuff as she typically has a few good songs and then the rest are shite but this time with the help of timbaland its quite a great record!! Its not rock enough but quite enjoy a good pop record that has that slight rock edge to it plus with other inspirations its a fantastic record!! So, I say if you like catchy tunes, with nice romantic lyrics and such then this record is for you!!!

Frank | 11/7/2009, 11:24 am EST

I have heard Shakira since she was around twelve years old and sang the beautiful “Magia” song, everybody knew she was going to be a super star. Shakira has already conquer the world and will continue in the same path unless she stop singing. Shakira can be heard in clubs in USA, Canada, SouthAmerica, Sweden, France, China, India, Australia… all over the world our little colombian Shakira is greatly known by common people.

Best greetings from Bucaramanga, Colombia.

LinkPinkPark | 11/9/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Ah NO !!!

No te digooo…

Anonymous better be glad their anonymous cause if I knew who they were I would personally punch them in the face for talking smack about Shakira the Latin pop goddess who is better than any crappy music I’m sure they listen to.

beach-bum | 11/10/2009, 7:57 pm EST

I’m a rocker, and even IIII like Shakira!

“She Wolf” is her best song yet — the music video is cool too, minus the part where she’s sucking her fingers… that type of sluttiness is just not her — but the song is one of this year’s best ones.

Scanning through these comments, it’s clear to me that people have a hard time moving on in terms of changing musical landscape… pop music is always changing, and, yes, often what is current is hard to accept, and can sound less soulful, less inspired than music from the era before it… yes, sometimes new music is very hard to listen to, even for a progessive minded person like me =)

But the new Shakira song is good, and I think it’s going to seep into people’s conscience in time. You have to think back and look at the history of any good song that has stood the test of time… a new, and in a sense (at the time) controvesial pop song comes out — for example, take Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes” — the song garners immediate attention, is instantly hated by many and/or thought of as weird or unfitting at the time by many (mainly by those living in the past), but, in time, as the song seeps into peoples’ brains, the song becomes liked by just as many people, or more, thus becomes popular, and, in time, a classic… it’s always been like that, pretty much…

Of course I’m not saying everything that’s out today is good; take mainstream rock: bands like Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin make me wanna wretch.

To be honest i already listen the whole record and i have to say that at first time it´s feel very different from all i heard before, but every rythm, every word it´s perfectly design to produce and emotion on listeners, every bit produce on you a good reaction, and good feeling so i only can recommend to listen the whole record and i´m sure that after that you´ll agree with me that this is a great record, surely the best of 2009.

It takes more talent than SHE has to conquer the world. Did u hear Jimmy Kimmel tell her, “..he likes her robot dance?” She sux, and even Madonna knows it.

If there’s someone who conquered the world, it’s BRITNEY.. She had a mindblowing popularity and success that every single person talked about her worldwide, had been the biggest selling female of the decade, still most searched name on web, her songs and videos became worldwide phenomenon, and everybody followed her footsteps.. Even her depression-time was one of the biggest legendary eras in the industry… Flopkira is a Middle East singer, and she has just one known album.. Her new album is a totally flop…
