John Mayer on the “Vulgar Relationship” Behind New LP “Battle Studies”

10/27/09, 7:10 pm EST

John Mayer may not have set out to make a concept album, but as his fourth LP, Battle Studies, developed, he found the songs’ war theme oddly appealing. “I was loving the war theme, the battle theme. The militaristic, vulgar, violent side of a relationship on the down slope,” he tells Rolling Stone in an exclusive video interview. “The record starts out sort of like the sun is out, then it gets darker. And then the sun comes back out at the end.”

Earlier this month, Mayer unveiled the video for the album’s first single, “Who Says,” which gives fans a raw look at one of his nights out on the town. In our Fall Music Preview, Mayer told Rolling Stone the song’s first lyric, “Who says you can’t get stoned?” was not about weed but, being “in control of the pleasure in your life,” adding that the record — which also features a duet with Taylor Swift — as a whole is “the next step in the story of who I am.”

Fans will get to hear that step on November 17th when Battle Studies hits stores, and pre-orders start today. Mayer has also lined up a string of dates to introduce Battle Studies to the world: a gig in New York on the day the record arrives, as well as stops in Toronto and Australia before New Year’s Eve shows with RS Breaking Artist Mayer Hawthorne. Mayer also revealed the locations he’ll hit on his 2010 Winter Tour:

WHEN IS HE COMING TO MPLS? RS, WILL YOU LET ME DO A REPORT OF IT?

Anonymous | 10/27/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Sounds like it’ll be a great album, I’m hoping :)

Valerie | 10/27/2009, 8:42 pm EST

As a woman, I just don’t get the appeal. The man is in love with himself, writes paint-by-numbers-I’m-so-sensit ive tripe, and he’s only out for one thing: his next sexual conquest.

Not that rock ‘n’ roll isn’t full of those types, but he’s just so painfully obvious about it all.

And his self-love is appalling.

casey ryback | 10/27/2009, 8:43 pm EST

more bland music from John Mayer!

dominic Pascarella | 10/27/2009, 11:13 pm EST

this is great stuff!

Amina | 10/27/2009, 11:24 pm EST

I can’t wait!

shaun | 10/27/2009, 11:29 pm EST

yawn, this album is going to be a snore judging by ‘who says’ maybe he’ll throw in something worthwhile this time. just for kicks, ya know?

Kirche | 10/28/2009, 6:45 am EST

The man is a genius. Have you EVER read his tweets?

mo | 10/28/2009, 7:25 am EST

even if the man is all about himself, all you bitter jennifer anisten fans need to realize that mayer is a dirty dirty guitar player, no question.

Hole | 10/28/2009, 9:33 am EST

The new single “heartbreak Warfare” is a direct rip off of the Edges’s guitar line on U2’s “Bad” off of The Unforgettable Fire. This guys best years are way behind him.
Sorry John. You should give all of your money and toys away and start over…then you may find that old writer in you.

none of u know | 10/28/2009, 10:30 am EST

he is one of the best guitarists around now, before u bash, im saying he’s one of the best that’s appeared in recent years. yes he may be full of himself, but in the music business you have to be or else you disappear. take kanye west for example, he makes great music and is a fucking jerk-off. nonetheless, people will pay to attend his shows regardless that he is a jerk. if u dont appreciate john mayer’s music than something should be wrong with your brains? just a thought

craziness | 10/28/2009, 1:07 pm EST

I saw him live once–killer guitarist. I was actually excited for this album before I saw the “duet with Taylor Swift” line. Lost me there, man.

DAN | 10/28/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Its like Justin Timberlake with a band and an acoustic guitar.

Which is good or bad.

I really think John is doing a great job with his career. Listen to Belief off of his last record.

Loucass | 10/28/2009, 3:19 pm EST

His music is obviously not bland, he was admitted into the top 200 guitar players hall of fame, plays with B B King and Eric Clapton. And I think your confusing “paint-by-numbers-I’m-so-sensi t ive tripe” with not caring what anyone thinks. I would like to see any of you get up in front of the amount of people he does and continuously perform the way he does.

anonymous | 10/28/2009, 3:42 pm EST

He is nothing special, just a bunch of old spliced together guitar licks. I can’t play as well as him I admit that but at least I don’t rip everybody off and pass it off as my own. He needs to tone down his ego, all that pot has gone to his head. Retardation is a common side affect from smoking too much. The only people that like him anymore are drunk 20 year college girls.

youdontknowme | 10/28/2009, 4:34 pm EST

OH, he is something special! Perhaps you hater haven’t been to one of his concerts or actually listened to his many albums, all of which are great. Try Live in LA…it’s my fave live recording. Many of you feel he is full of himself? I get the opposite impression. I think he is very down to earth and can be at times, self deprecating AND very good to his fans. His fan base is a huge mix of people and is quite diverse. I have seen it at concerts and on his cruise. Not only his he a genius, he’s funny, he’s can play the guitar like no other and writes his own songs…not to mention how many grammys he has…so suck it all you haters who don’t know what you’re talking about. Do you’re homework before you decide to bash someone!

youdontknowme | 10/28/2009, 4:36 pm EST

yikes..too bad this didn’t have spell check…should have read it before i sent it…don’t bother bashing me because i won’t be back on this site to look at it anyway…losers

Anonymous | 10/28/2009, 5:26 pm EST

God, what a talentless douchebag. Who in hell would pay a dollar to see this garbage? Total loser.

Harley | 10/28/2009, 10:43 pm EST

He is unquestionably a talented guitarist. Any musician would have to give him props on his ability, even if they don’t care for his songs. Also, he admits that it is a challenge to be innovative and that many of his licks do harken back to older rock and blues recordings. Name *ONE* guitar player who doesn’t have influences which find their way into licks? I enjoy several of his songs, and don’t care for some. Isn’t it what way with any artist? I agree that his tweets can be quite amusing and take a person of intellect to concoct. The previous comment about the live in L.A. DVD is correct. It shows his versatility, some humility, and an ass-load of talent.

Hrmm | 10/29/2009, 7:13 am EST

I was really hoping he’d continue with the killer blues sound he had developed into with Continuum. Not sure I’m a fan of where’s he’s going with this “next step in the story of who I am.” I see nothing here that even comes close to “Gravity” or “Belief”.

COMFORT INN | 10/29/2009, 8:24 am EST

Mayer, Blunt, J Johnson, etc, a bunch who want to be James Taylor, good luck with that.

Brian | 10/29/2009, 10:34 am EST

America needs a good guitar player or atleast create one, hes just a product, his songs are bad and he´s not even close to the real guitar goddess.Gilmour,Page,Clapton,B B King,The edge, etc, etc. He gets too much publicity specially from Rolling Stone magazine. But honesty, does he has any good song otr Album,Please be serious.

TequilaMockingbird | 10/29/2009, 12:45 pm EST

I’m hoping this’ll be good, but I’m still a fan of the throwback-blues John Mayer (”Who Do You Think I Was?”, “Belief”, “Vultures”)… hopefully there’ll be a little guitar muscle left over on Battle Studies. And a message to the Mayer haters: think about the current crop of musicians who have either debuted or became popular in the modern era (so no Gilmour, Edge, Page, King, Clapton, etc.) As a singer/songwriter, if not just a good guitarist, who except for Jack White is more talented? Y’all can keep the Fall Out Boys, Paramores, etc. for all I care.

Corelio | 10/29/2009, 5:49 pm EST

Couldn’t agree more with Brian. JM is a product just like B Spears. He is just a good imitator of the great guitarists. He does not have an unique sound like them. Sometimes he plays like the one, sometimes like the other.

Hank | 10/30/2009, 10:50 am EST

Who cares Mayer, sing about doing Jen Aniston. I don’t want to hear your fake war tales.

Lorenzo | 10/30/2009, 12:29 pm EST

So many haters in here it is unbelievable. John is one of the greatest artists out there today and is, in many ways, underrated as a guitarist. No, he’s not up there with the all time greatest but he sure is in the heavy league. As a songwriter he has his own style and if you don’t like it, too bad, but don’t say this man can’t make some decent pop tunes or blues tunes, cause he has definitely done his homework on both and makes killer songs, and if you can’t admit that, your whole perspective is wack, maybe you’ll love him when he.. come on Jay z.. peace

Big Red | 10/30/2009, 3:46 pm EST

I really got into John’s music with his TRY album- a collection of very raw live recordings for various small shows. A lot of people dislike him, that’s fine. Look past the lyrics, the love songs and the celebrity status, and you have a very talented guitar player that collaborates with amazing session artists. Steve Jordan (drummer) is a legend. No matter how much you can bash John Mayer, I think very most people would say that he’s an extremely talented musician.

bearon | 10/30/2009, 4:40 pm EST

I feel he is a talented musician and singer, but don’t listen to his music. How many times has Aniston be engaged?

Ari | 10/30/2009, 4:43 pm EST

‘Heartbreak Warfare’ sounded a bit like ‘Crazy’ by Seal. Did not sound like a U2 guitar. I liked the song and can’t wait to get the new CD. It’s gonna be awesome.

Doctor Greg Hormone | 10/30/2009, 6:48 pm EST

IMHO John has played the marketers who are the real villians of greed, against his own aspirations to get his music “public.”

He started out publishing his original music as a contemporary crooner…writing love songs that built a following of mostly women, and graduated into a strong presentation of personal self expression doing the blues and heavier rock guitar that probably would not have appealed to the greedy marketers for lack of financial opportunity.

John is a smart fellow. He is an excellent musician, and is acknowledged by the fans that support him, as well as the company he keeps in the business.

I am a fan, and respect his amazing talent, regardless of his own personal evolution…He pleases those who respect and understand that most musicians can only write great music based on who they are, what they know, and what they have.

Disliking John Mayer because he doesnt produce what you want to hear, or what he has done in the past, is as irrelevant as disliking him because he has blue eyes.

Dig his style, dig his transition, and dig his talent. He IS a great musician and songwriter! Nuff said.

Mary | 10/30/2009, 10:52 pm EST

Looking forward to the new album and for his tour. Watching for the Philly and DC dates.

Rob | 10/31/2009, 2:06 am EST

Well he is nothing special as a guitar player nothing ground breaking there.just a burb kid snatching some licks from the greats. its been so long since an srv burst on the scene that people think this punk is the second coming

THE TRUTH | 11/2/2009, 11:41 am EST

The Album does sound like a continuation of “Heavier Things”…I was hoping he would gone for a more experimental approach and go all out and get some trippy instruments and sounds in there instead kind of resorting back to regular sounds on “Heavier Things”. I was kind of hoping he would take more of an Indie approach than a pop approach.

anyone agree?

Maitor | 11/2/2009, 6:47 pm EST

What’s wrong with “Heavier Things”? Anything produced by Jack Joseph Puig is worth listening too! But in all honesty I think Mr. Mayer is the anti everything I like. His self promoting, ‘I’ll be there at a drop of a hat attitude is unbearable. I think Duncan Sheik is better but ignored. Kevin Gilbert was the real master, but no one knows who he was!

THE TRUTH | 11/2/2009, 8:42 pm EST

I never said there was anything wrong with “Heavier Things”….Just the fans need variety.

Brooksie | 11/5/2009, 9:34 am EST

Dudes! John Mayer is the shit! He’s the best Blues guitarist for his age. As a musician myself, I am truly inspired by his music. Even though his songwriting has gone from weird chords (jazz chords) to simple changes, it has allowed him to solo more and bring out his blues roots. His idols are the same as all of ours. SRV, Hendrix, and B.B. Enough said. He’s got it right!

Luke | 11/5/2009, 10:37 am EST

Just because you have valid influences doesn’t make you a valid musician. take for instance Derek Trucks. he’s younger than John Mayer and his style is completely out of this world. John Mayer is more of a songwriter and melodic soloist.

Spencie | 11/5/2009, 11:08 am EST

hey brooksie its spencie, you left yourself logged on in the library, bro.

I dont listen to john mayer, but if brooksie-poo likes him, he must be alright, im more of a judas priest person myself.

see you in guitar ensemble brooksie!

YOUR DAD | 11/13/2009, 11:03 pm EST

How much of a douche do you have to be to read an article about someone you don’t like and then take the time to bash them on a message board? You haters are bringing me down when I should be pumped about this new album. I have to go now, there is a new Octo-mom article I need to comment on. Go John!

Emily | 11/14/2009, 8:59 am EST

Too bad JM polarizes so many out there, which is likely a result of his overexposure in the media. His musical talent is raw genius. Give him a break- have you seen the clip of him in the leotard? Dude has a sense of humor which many of the haters don’t seem to have or appreciate. Looking forward to the March show in Greensboro. He is badass in concert! I have been a huge fan for the past few years, can’t get enough of him.

jeewee | 11/14/2009, 12:45 pm EST

got BS yesterday, and I’m thrilled. Guitar stuff is right on the money and the guy got the guts to have Robbie Macintosh to put some great slide stuff in there too. What does that tell you about ego?
JM inspires both my guitar playing and my songwriting, ’nuff said. I don’t care about doing Aniston, I just enjoy great songs.
Cheers, JeeWee

Anonymous | 11/16/2009, 1:58 am EST

i love how people here are bashing jm and saying how big his ego is. because you know, the fact that you came here to talk shit on some dude who’s godlike at guitar and that you have no personal relationship or insight of doesn’t in fact show how big your own ego is. man i love ignorance.

Wash | 11/17/2009, 4:16 pm EST

The way I see it, Mayer is carrying the torch of many of the great rock, pop, and blues artists that have gone before him. He’s no Hendrix, Clapton, or SRV. But he’s done something great as a songwriter by bridging the music of his parents’ generation with some of the pop of his own generation. I don’t know of anyone else who does it as well as he does. Wrt his personal life- I’ll leave that to the desparate housewives to discuss. I’m only interested in his music.

joeygl | 11/18/2009, 9:00 am EST

I get him. I get what he’s about.
To truly understand him, you gotta strip him of all this hollywood status. For god sake. The guy has a song for every emotion i have experienced. Not many Musicians can have that affect on people. Let alone write the songs he has written at his age! Most musicians strvie their whole lives to write a song like daughters…

daviddimuzio | 11/20/2009, 7:08 am EST

John Mayer is the man. The album is great, period. If you don’t like it then I have no idea what you were even listening to pop music in the first place for, it’s about as good as catchy songs come. :)
