Them Crooked Vultures Unleash First Single “New Fang,” Add Dates

10/26/09, 12:57 pm EST

Them Crooked Vultures have unveiled the studio version of “New Fang,” the first single off their self-titled debut album, over at twt.fm today. The supergroup — Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones — blend the heavy, jammy and psychedelic influences of their respective bands, and with Homme on lead vocals, “New Fang” sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Queens of the Stone Age album. The track opens with a few blissful seconds of Grohl’s monster drumming and launches into a groove propelled by Jones’ wandering bassline and a crunchy guitar riff that’s comparable to Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti rocker “The Wanton Song.”

Check out rock’s most famous supergroups, from Cream to Audioslave.

The stream of “New Fang” is currently linking to an Amazon MP3 store page where fans can download the track for 99 cents, however Amazon says the song won’t be available for purchase until November 3rd. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the self-produced, 13-track Them Crooked Vultures will be released on November 17th, just three months and one week after the band made their surprise live debut in Chicago following this year’s Lollapalooza.

From there, the Vultures traveled Europe playing surprise gigs at festivals before finally flying back over the Atlantic for their first stateside tour, including gigs at Austin City Limits and New York’s Roseland Ballroom (read our review of the show here). In addition to concerts in the U.K., Germany and Australia on tap this year, the Vultures also announced some West Coast concerts, including the band’s first in California, in November. Check out the dates below:

Nov. 17 – Los Angeles, CA @ Wiltern Theater
Nov. 19 – Oakland, CA @ Fox Theater
Nov. 21 – Seattle, WA @ Paramount Theater
Nov. 22 – Portland, OR @ Roseland Theater

PK | 10/26/2009, 4:10 pm EST

If I were to say what I feel, I’d be repeating what’s already been said. Awesome.

The Seeker | 10/26/2009, 4:52 pm EST

I would like to point out that this is one of least badass, heavy and hard rockin’ songs on the album.

Grohlie for life | 10/26/2009, 5:03 pm EST

It’s great to hear Dave back on drums again, makes you wonder why he ever stopped.

wanton soup | 10/26/2009, 5:56 pm EST

All our problems solved if Pagey joins up, Cheers!

This is probably the least impressive thing I’ve heard out of these guys yet. Sounds like QOTSA, had they been around in the late 70s.

Polarised | 10/26/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Don’t worry, this is one of the weakest tracks on the record.

Songs like daffodils, warsaw, scumbag blues and gunman are stunningly good.

mjr | 10/26/2009, 8:27 pm EST

This is so awesome. I love it. JPJ and Dave Grohl are legends; Josh Homme is good, but fits in this band perfectly.

freakin’ sweet. can’t wait for the album to come out

Ok, definitely interesting musicianship.

However, every time I hear this ensemble I can’t help but think they are recycling tracks from their previous experiences.

Rather than be original material, it sounds like a blend of b-side work from LZ, QOTSA, FF…

Then, Homme is not much of a singer, I still think his greatest contributions stem from Kyuss, which will always be superior to any other thing he ever did, including this “Supergroup”…

Rock is dead, and this group just proves that point…the same old riffs and beats, the same old solos, the same old regurgitation of shallow “white man” blues…

Hey Anonymous,

Take an upper, huh?

Tom | 10/27/2009, 10:09 am EST

If all it is is recycled tracks from LZ, QOTSA, and FF i’ll take it anyday of the week. Thank god for people such as this or rock would be dead. These guys rock and Josh Homme is as underrated as it gets. Everything he touches is great, fun, music. Eagles of Death Metal, QOTSA, and Kyuss. Keep rocking guy!!!! LONG LIVE ROCK!!!!!

i saw this guys in philly. they sounded heavy, polished, and boring. I paid alot for the tix and still had to walk out. I wasn’t the only person walking out either. what a disappointment.

Anonymous | 10/27/2009, 4:31 pm EST

I was at the philly show also, i didn,t see anybody leave early the crowd roared with applause after each song one of the best shows all year

zappa>god | 10/27/2009, 5:28 pm EST

finally an LA date! I will be anxiously waiting at 10am to buy my tickets!

Jeff | 10/27/2009, 6:11 pm EST

You really think this sounds even remotely comparable to The Wonton Song!?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmkay then.

Great track. Had it stuck in my head all day.

“i saw this guys in philly. they sounded heavy, polished, and boring. I paid alot for the tix and still had to walk out. I wasn’t the only person walking out either. what a disappointment.”

I pooped a little when I read that. They kicked ass live.

JJGG | 10/28/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Josh Home, John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl?

YAWN! Boring…

everyone stop making believe they’re making some kind of a REAL musical statement…

The Seeker | 10/28/2009, 2:19 pm EST

“Rock is dead, and this group just proves that point…the same old riffs and beats, the same old solos, the same old regurgitation of shallow “white man” blues…”

Today’s attention spans are spoiled by the mind-boggling amount of musical variety out there.

EgyptianCowboy | 10/28/2009, 3:11 pm EST

Decent rock song but there’s no way it will make any kind of impact on the charts. I know that doesn’t matter, but Grohl and Homme are used to having Alternative rock hits.

TOM SMITH | 10/28/2009, 5:41 pm EST

Message to wanton shop: have to agree with you, Pagey joining up would be cool-than he and Jonesy could stick it to Robert Plant for stiffing them on a Zep reunion.
Meesage to anyone who doesn’t like this group because they’re a “supergroup”: to quote my teenage son, next time try Ex-Lax!

alal | 10/29/2009, 2:40 am EST

love nirvana
love kyuss
love QOTSA
love foo fighters
love led zepplin

HATE this song

denzepp58 | 10/29/2009, 2:09 pm EST

each one of these dudes has more talent in thier pinky toes than all the Nickelbacks,Avengedsevenfolds, and 99% of all the pablum that passes for rock and popular music these days…would love to see Pagey and his adopted son Jack White join this band,,As long as we have guys like JW and JH and Bands like the Black Keys and Secret Machines around Rock will still live on….Peace…

Mr Strothers | 11/3/2009, 7:44 am EST

er, firstly, New Fang sounds about as much like the Wanton Song as the theme music from Cheers.
Secondly, to all saying rock is dead and samey, go home and listen to some ‘awesome’ pop or ‘ground breaking’ RnB music then!! These guys are fantastic and sound like Armageddon on guitars!!

Rockerman Tozzi | 11/20/2009, 3:30 pm EST

Just saw Them Crooked Vultures at Fox Theatre in Oakland and was blown away!!! They went off, the crowd was perfect, and the music is better live then off the record!!! They started out with JPJ on slide guitar, then bass, piano solo, keytar…. this guy does everything! Grohl was amazing on the drums and Homme actually sang with some range and presence. One of those things thats better live!!! Awesomely inspring as a musician and as a music fan!!!
