Casablancas Says Strokes Are Divided Over Progress of Fourth LP

10/26/09, 2:49 pm EST

The Strokes have reportedly run into a “disagreement” while working on new tracks for their fourth album, the follow-up to 2006’s First Impressions of Earth. Frontman Julian Casablancas gave a progress report to the U.K.’s Sun (via the Quietus), in which he admitted the paper there’s a lack of consensus between the bandmembers as to whether “the songs are ready.”

“I’m somewhere in the middle,” Casablancas said of the Strokes’ creative rift. “The problem is getting us together. We’re scattered everywhere, and apart from when we’re rehearsing we don’t see each other. We’re not like people who go to the movies together. It’s weird with the band, a band is actually a great way to ruin a friendship.”

Thankfully for Strokes fans, the hiatus after First Impressions has led to a surge of Strokes side and solo projects, and as Rolling Stone previously reported, Casablancas will release his debut solo album Phrazes for the Young on November 3rd. While the standard release of Phrazes drops next Tuesday, Pitchfork reports that a box set edition of the album will drop December 18th. Why wait? Well, for $89 you’ll receive the album on both CD and vinyl, a DVD of Casablancas performing the songs acoustic, an additional CD of demos and B-sides, posters, a 48-page book with Julian’s signature and much more ephemera.

I’m stoked for “Phrazes”. First single is kinda blah but that promo he put out on his youtube channel sounds tiiiiiight.

These quotes are sort of a bummer. In my free time I used to imagine the members of The Strokes going to the theater together and watching movies.

I smell a break-up. They only had one great album in them anyways…
Too bad all the solo records SUCK.
Nickle-Eye…worst thing ever.

I smell a break-up. They only had one great album in them, the last one was TERRIBLE, like the burn when I pee. YAY! :)

I thought First Impressions was underrated. It’s too long, for sure, but there’s some great stuff on there.

I feel bad for The Strokes, as they got destroyed by too much hype in 2001. There was no way to live up to being labeled the collective second coming of Christ by the music media for a record that was good but nothing earth shattering. They could have evolved into something great if they were treated like any other rock band. But they couldn’t survive the hype and inevitable backlash that comes with it.

Hopefully they will serve as a lesson to the music media that if you really do want “The New Nirvana”, you’ll allow it to happen naturally and not smother any new band with promise.

Julian is correct. Band’s are an excellent way to ruin friendships. You just get too close sometimes and it takes it’s toll.

In retrospect the Strokes were probably slightly mis-managed. But you have to give them credit for sticking by their “friends” and the people who helped them in the beginning.

Is This It? was that rare zeitgeist record that will be remembered in the history of rock’n'roll.

But Room on Fire is the superior record. It’s a fully realized album with a kick ass rhythm track and excellent lyrics. “That’s not my problem” is this generations “A DENIAL A DENIAL”.

FIOE had some really great moments.

In a way it’s like how Oasis bested the Stone Roses on the global stage. In that Kings of Leon are mega-stars and The Strokes are not quite the top-tier act they really should be.

Julian’s tastes are usually right. Thin Lizzy mixed with A-HA sounds like a good combination to me. The rest of the guys should fall in line for fuck’s sake.

Unfortunately, I don’t see anymore records like the first and second albums from The Strokes anytime soon. They need to check all of their egos at the door and start concentrating on the music.

After hearing the absolutely stunning Phrazes for the Young, i’m not so sure another Strokes album is needed. The way i see it, they can release a Strokes album e very two or three years, OR we can get deliciously tasty solo albums from both Julian and Albert every two or three years. Thats double the albums we’d be hearing!

Bejaiastrokesfan | 11/2/2009, 2:10 pm EST

too sad the the most promising band in the US is maybe gonna split !!

one thing is clear, as a sign of protest i’ll never hear, buy, watch, go to a live of solo member of the group !!!!!!!
