Tokio Hotel Strip Down for Rare Acoustic Rendition of “Automatic”

10/23/09, 5:03 pm EST

German rockers Tokio Hotel aren’t often in America and they rarely play acoustic, which makes their performance of “Automatic” in Rolling Stone’s New York offices earlier this week an extra special treat for the band’s loyal fans. “Automatic was one of the last songs we wrote for Humanoid,” Bill Kaulitz tells RS of the track off the band’s recently released album (their second English-language disc). “I got the idea for that song in the car. The song is about automatic feelings in a girl — she has no real love.” Click above to check out Bill and his brother Tom Kaulitz’s stripped-down version of the song.

Phabio | 10/23/2009, 5:51 pm EST

Wow, that was gorgeous. Thanks for snagging the band and sharing this with us!

rarrkun | 10/23/2009, 5:53 pm EST

That was lovely. A bit awkward in some parts, but I love it. Thank you for featuring Tokio Hotel again!

lisa | 10/23/2009, 5:54 pm EST

BEAUTIFUL

melissa | 10/23/2009, 5:55 pm EST

that was beautiful :)

H | 10/23/2009, 5:59 pm EST

Love acustic version. I wish they would do unplugged of Humanoid on TV…

Szilvie | 10/23/2009, 5:59 pm EST

It’s amazing how playing the acoustic version of a song changes the mood and tone of the piece so drastically.

slap | 10/23/2009, 6:00 pm EST

They’re not as awful as I thought they’d be. Now if only they made some real rock n roll instead of that glam pop thing they’re doing. Cause right now they basically sound like the Backstreet Boys, but with instruments.

Oh, and all the Tokio Hotel fangirls don’t need to attack my opinion, since it is just that, an OPINION.

MidnightMonsoon | 10/23/2009, 6:01 pm EST

This was incredible. I was pretty overwhelmed. First – what a nice surprise, I don’t think any of us were expected to hear an offstage acoustic version so soon. And they completely NAILED it. Bill’s voice was so sweet and softly beautiful on the high notes, Tom’s guitar playing was fantastic, they really have that rare and priceless quality of musicianship that allows a very few artists to take a highly-produced, effects-laden, slicked up electronic track with a million instruments and layers, and sit down with just a voice and a guitar and capture all the beauty and emotion. Thank you so much for this amazing video!

cbg | 10/23/2009, 6:02 pm EST

Wow, what a nice treat this video was. Thanks guys! I just love this accoustic version so much. It’s toned down, slower, more powerful, and with just the guitar and Bill’s singing, it becomes almost another song. I have to say I love it even more than the CD version. More of this kind of stuff from Tokio Hotel in Rolling Stone, please.

Cleo | 10/23/2009, 6:03 pm EST

Ok, that video made me cry. And I never cry! Bill, your voice is impossible beautiful. This acustic version is so honest and heartbreaking. I love these guys from the bottom of my heart, and I will as long as they stay together.

nelda | 10/23/2009, 6:04 pm EST

what a beautiful performance. they’re so beyond talented.

Miriam | 10/23/2009, 6:09 pm EST

This version of Automatic is to sad and emotional. It really touched my heart like no other performance has done before. Bill: Your voice is just perfection. So is your face, expesially your lips. Tokio Hotel is my favouriteband of all times. How is it possible not to love them?

Jaspar | 10/23/2009, 6:11 pm EST

OMG, that was so beautiful!

Kim | 10/23/2009, 6:18 pm EST

This version is beautiful, but Bill is a belter–I still think he’s best when he’s owning the stage in front of thousands of people.

Now Rolling Stone? Where is the video of them stripping down that your promised us? *taps foot impatiently*

linda | 10/23/2009, 6:20 pm EST

BEYOND PERFECT

MeggyBoo | 10/23/2009, 6:20 pm EST

This version of Automatic is so emotional that you really see the true meaning behind the song.

Another think I like are the close-ups of Tom’s hands while he’s playing the guitar. It’s always fascinating to see. ^^

Thanks RS!

“Automatic” is one of those rare songs that sounds just as good acoustic as it does on the album (though, I have a soft-spot for the acoustic version). Hope to see more TH on RS soon!

Juli | 10/23/2009, 8:00 pm EST

That was as beautiful as the twins are. They are really passionate about what they do and it shows. As someone said earlier they are able to take an electronic highly produced song and change it to something completely different.

Steinsgrrl | 10/23/2009, 8:00 pm EST

elderhausgirlz | 10/24/2009, 2:10 am EST

We wish that everyone who judges Tokio Hotel negatively because of their appearance, youth and the fangirl frenzy that follows them would take a few minutes to listen to this and realize that we love them for the depth of their talent first and foremost. Thanks, Rolling Stone, for giving Bill and Tom the opportunity to do this acoustic version and for sharing it with us!!

Sarah | 10/24/2009, 3:03 am EST

Phabio | 10/24/2009, 8:13 am EST

Slap–
Only because you warned the ‘fangirls’ not to ‘jump on your opinion’ and no one did, I’ll say something to you. First of all, I’m glad that you at least didn’t find the song awful—I guess it’s a start, right? And also, there’s nothing wrong with liking pop music. I wouldn’t go as far as to compare TH to the Backstreet Boys, but I respect TH for writing the music that they want in the style that they want, even though fans might feel betrayed that they’re now making ‘pop’ music, whereas before they made ‘rock’ music. I think you should forget about stereotypes and stop trying to compare TH to other artists and just listen to the music for the music. Pop music may be overrated, but some pop music is actually good. Like I said, no shame in liking a pop band. Personally, I don’t listen to Humanoid and hear pop music, nor rock music, nor punk nor electronica, just good, catchy music that is Tokio Hotel’s. They have their own sound, so it’s really useless trying to classify or compare them.

I hope you don’t think I’m attacking your opinion ;) I just think Humanoid is an album anyone can enjoy and I think if you let go of your pre-judgements and expectations for a minute and just listen to the album, you might end up liking a song or two. If you really want to hear rock music, look up the title track, Humanoid, or Screamin’ [one of the bonuses]. TH incorporated so much more than ‘pop’ into their album, I guess is what I’m trying to say, so don’t knock it until you try it. Don’t judge an entire album by one song. In all honesty, I had my own doubts hearing Automatic, but then when I bought the album, I was blown away. It’s such an evolution from their old music and such a diverse yet unified mix of sounds and songs.

And oh, for the record, I know you didn’t imply this but I just felt the need to clarify: TH wasn’t casted like BB; in fact, they’ve been best friends for 10 years, and the twins, well, obviously have known each other their entire lives. They also write their own songs and lyrics and do their own thing. I have major respect for them, considering they’re all barely in their twenties.

So there, I hope that was the response you were looking for. ;) I don’t want to shove Humanoid down your throat and I appreciate that you at least watched the video and stated your opinion on it. And if it’s not your music, it’s just not your music. However, I hope that you at least take a second look at the album. :)

Diana | 10/24/2009, 8:35 am EST

That was flippin’ awesome, THANK YOU Rolling Stone. Bill sounds great!!! (:

Now how about Tokio Hotel on your cover with an in depth interview and photo shoot? There isn’t an American fan that wouldn’t buy at least one copy! Just sayin, sales & marketing dept., wink, wink.

žanis | 10/24/2009, 8:52 am EST

Tokio hotel is amazinig, the acoustic mix is so cool- I would love to be a person like Tom

bluewaterboy | 10/24/2009, 9:42 am EST

I can’t believe this.RS actually puts up a blog, especially in R&R Daily, that doesn’t kick these kids down. You guys havent been looking at the Euro Charts again have you? Maybe you saw some of the live vids of MTV Day in Athens a few weeks age. Those 16,000 Greek fans young and old singing every cut from Humanoid in english surprise you??Sorry Slap I’m not a fangirl although I do have 2 of them that are 13 yr old twins that I took last year to one of the US shows. You seem to have a good outlook ,admitting what you like and don’t regardless of what the general consensus may be.I’ve quoted a BBC writer on this blog before. The reason many people may not like them is because they are prettyboys(or “glam”)as Slap says or they make us older folks feel older.Yep- they are and maybe they do but in my opinion they are very good writers(Phantom Rider for instance),pretty darn good musicians, put on a very exciting show, and make you look forward to what they may very well do in the future. And in case yor wondering Iv”e seen them all,Stones ,Zep,U-2, right up through Coldplay and the Jonas-sluts.
Right now I really feel old though.I saw AC/DC last night.
Good Job Rolling Stone–finally!!

Elle | 10/24/2009, 9:54 am EST

The TH is the biggest phenomenon since I don’t remember what, and RS still did not have it on its cover? Just be more adventurous, RS, and put something more deserving than JB on your cover. Or at least more photogenic :)

Kristen | 10/24/2009, 9:57 am EST

Really good! It was very simple but simplicity is good sometimes! I really enjoyed Automatic acoustic. Tokio Hotel is such a great band. Thanks Rolling Stone!

Nanz | 10/24/2009, 10:20 am EST

Tokio Hotel is my happy pill. If other people could get with the program the world would be a better place. Awesome acoustic version. Bill you are just BEAUTIFUL!

bluewaterboy | 10/24/2009, 10:38 am EST

Did I say something wrong Rolling Stone to have my comments yanked? Or was I right when I said that they make you RS guys feel old.Suck it up.I’m 55.I did not cuss or anything.Just hit the nail on the head. You can’t stand it because the prettyboy boys are darn good and everybody commenting agrees(Even Slap to a certain extent)

Yinch | 10/24/2009, 11:12 am EST

Wow, it’s amazing!

Karencita | 10/24/2009, 11:16 am EST

elena | 10/24/2009, 11:39 am EST

I like the acoustic version much more

Mire | 10/24/2009, 11:41 am EST

It could be better, honestly. But it’s still great, I really like it more than the album version.

RS, put them on the cover! :D
They really deserve it. More than the JB.

I just think it’s so cute at the end when they just stare at each other with giant smiles. Like “did we play that right”. Or “good job” or something. Ha.

Alesi | 10/24/2009, 12:10 pm EST

Thank you! Rolling Stone! They were great, I enjoyed this acoustic performance. Thanks a million.

Ashley - Michigan - USA | 10/24/2009, 12:31 pm EST

That acoustic version is so pretty. <3

sarah | 10/24/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Awesome performance! Rolling Stone, they need to be on the cover! They are real musicians! Just look at this amazing acoustic performance! Bill hit all the right notes and tom plays his guitar with such a strong sound! Great performance overall! ps. vote for them for the best group at the ema voting site! BTW, they need to play acoustics more often! :D Thank you RS for posting this!

Wapiti7 | 10/24/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Yeah!! Einfach geil!
I like the acoustic version so much!! But I think it’s better in german…
TH is my favourite band forever.

Milena | 10/24/2009, 1:49 pm EST

Tokio Hotel is Amazing!!! They can play everything!!!

sonnensystem | 10/24/2009, 1:53 pm EST

That was beautiful!
Thanks for the video!

Sara | 10/24/2009, 1:53 pm EST

Wow, that was beautiful! They are so amazing!

glitterparrot | 10/24/2009, 1:57 pm EST

This song is lovely on acoustic but it’s much more powerful when played with all instruments just because Bill seems as if he wants to belt out the lyrics but must make them quiet and soft when only playing with the acoustic.
That being said, this has exceeded my expectations of this song on acoustic. It’s just so great in any direction you look at it.

Claudia | 10/24/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Stunning! I am in love with the acoustic version.

Mahveen | 10/24/2009, 3:22 pm EST

TheMichMonk | 10/24/2009, 7:09 pm EST

I’m a 40+ yr old fan. These guys are amazingly talented and refreshing because they were NOT groomed like other acts. I wish them all the success in adding the U.S. to the list of their accomplishments. Acoustic Automatic is fantastic.

Diz | 10/24/2009, 7:54 pm EST

In the original version, he sounds as if he is angry at the girl for being “automatic” and yet here, you can see that he is hurt by it. Such different interpretations by one truly amazing band. Brilliant performance :)

linz | 10/24/2009, 8:23 pm EST

I honestly think I like the this verson better than the one on the album. The emotion behind the words is so clear and painful… such a beautiful song. Thank you for such a treat!

Jamie Lynn | 10/24/2009, 9:06 pm EST

Although I prefer German to English, this version of the song brought me to tears. Bill’s vocal’s have improved so much, and I’m so proud of him. This is just incredible, I can’t wait to see them again!

Jenny | 10/24/2009, 9:13 pm EST

I like the aucostic version very much

rockinthosejeans | 10/24/2009, 9:31 pm EST

That was so beautiful! :’)

Thank you Rolling Stone for getting them to play the song acoustic. I’ve been a TH fan for years, and I’m not very fond of their new sound. If I could just hear all their new songs without any electronics, I’d fall in love with them all over again. <3

Shanasaki | 10/24/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Wow. Thanks for the great coverage, Rolling Stone. Just took my love for the band to another level.

Glenda | 10/24/2009, 10:06 pm EST

Thank you so much for this performance! It’s a treat to see such a lovely rendition of this song. I hope to see more of Tokio Hotel in Rolling Stone.

Jessica | 10/24/2009, 11:03 pm EST

bill’s voice is truly amazing.

Dina | 10/25/2009, 1:16 am EST

The performance wasn’t bad…. I’m actually surprised… I wasn’t really a tokio hotel fan before… but they seem to have matured…Judging by this performance alone, i would say they are better musicians then some other ones out there in the music business right now

Jerry | 10/25/2009, 4:50 am EST

Thank you for letting us hear the acoustic version of Automatic. It is, simply put, a beautiful piece of music. I like this much better than their attempt to make this song “radio friendly” in the US.

You can understand this band or not but no one can deny that millions of fans everywhere on this planet have been deeply touched by their music. That says more than any of us could ever put into words.

BTW, I will (God willing) turn 50 in less than 3 weeks. Like bluewaterboy I’ve been there and done that. Twice. I’ve seen Tokio Hotel live more than once. They can hang with the best of them. The Kauli were born to be on stage and the crowd–young and old–can feel the magic. On the Humanoid album they ignore genre lines like Bill Kaulitz ignores gender lines. I tip my hat to free thinkers and hope that America can somehow accept a band that is led by two of them.

well over 21 | 10/25/2009, 8:17 am EST

Thank you for featuring Tokio Hotel. This was a treat even for those of us out of the hormone driven stage.

alex | 10/25/2009, 12:09 pm EST

pure love. that’s all i have to say.

krla from PERU! | 10/25/2009, 1:15 pm EST

gosh.. i loved this acoustic version soo muchh
it was soo lovely..
the twins were just beautiful!!!:)

Kuwin (nightflower) | 10/25/2009, 3:56 pm EST

I definitely love this acoustic version. It felt as though it was a different song from the bitter-angery version of the Automatic single to the vulnerable, heartfelt, heart aching disappointment of love version. Bill writes and sing songs with such honesty and power that makes a great impact on me because I can relate to it. I respect Tokio Hotel so much and hope they get more recognition for their talent and hard work. Thank-you Rollingstone!

RayRay | 10/25/2009, 6:14 pm EST

Well said Jerry, bluewaterboy, and everyone else, even Slap!!
I happenened to see the real MTV Day 2009 videos of them live in Greece two weeks ago. They were on an international website called “Tokio Hotel Network”(not TH TV) I was astonished and mesmerized to say the very least. These kids are way way good. Take a look at it.It is great to see the comments everyone makes after they see them play live.Remember ,the only reason all those fangirls are up front is that they can run faster to the stage when they open the doors.

one "new" fan :) | 10/25/2009, 6:18 pm EST

wow, i like your new song “automatic”… you are so great! Keep it up! :)

Becky KCK | 10/25/2009, 6:49 pm EST
