Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Peek Reveals Star in Onstage Glory

In five days, Michael Jackson fans will get their first real look at the comeback show that could have restored his reputation as the world’s greatest entertainer when the documentary This Is It hits 3,000 U.S. screens (and nearly 19,000 international theaters) for a two-week run. The film’s director, Kenny Ortega, says he had those fans in mind when he helped cut down 120 hours of rehearsal footage for Jackson’s 50-show run at London’s O2 Arena into the feature-length movie.

“There was this desire to have one more visit with Michael, one more experience with him,” says Ortega, who was choreographing Jackson’s show. “It’s powerful. It’s moving, it’s entertaining. It’s big.”

Two pieces of footage from This Is It screened for Rolling Stone were indeed impressive, and Jackson, who died after a lethal combination of sedatives stopped his heart on June 25th, appears professional and nimble on the screen. “Human Nature” begins with just Jackson and his guitarist, and it’s clear he’s totally in command of his body and his voice. “The Way You Make Me Feel” segues from a doo-wop intro into the song’s more familiar arrangement when Jackson punches out a fist and emits a little growl. When the band misses its cue, he firmly instructs, “Watch me for that growl!”

Gauntly thin and in bedazzled costumery, he hits all the notes, nails all the dance moves. He pops, locks, spins, does the worm, breaks out a penguin dance and even shows off some new moves. The dancers and musicians all working around him seem awestruck (their most frequent comments are “I agree, MJ” and “sounds good, MJ”). “We had a blueprint given to us by Michael from doing the tour — we translated his wishes and his final curtain call and that’s what you’ll see,” says the tour’s musical director, Michael Bearden.

The film also shows the sheer size of Jackson’s reimagined stage show — a huge set that included stories of scaffolding, the world’s largest 3-D LCD screen, a retinue of dancers, aerial acrobatics, a children’s choir and 12 original short films.

“I would hope they get what I got from it, which is a wonderful last experience with Michael that is like no other,” Ortega says.

I can only say the man was meticulous. The movie may or may not be commercially successful, but it certainly does not have his approval.

Having said that, I am glad it is in the guidance of Kenny Ortega.

I am so excited. I saw alittle glimpse on the net & it made me just cry. He will be so missed. I still cry for him. This man is the most talented entertainer in the whole world. No one can ever replace him. RIP Michael. You were Loved.

What a nice, balanced, respectful story, RS. Thanks.

God bless that man. God bless his beautiful soul. As sad as this whole situation is for the people he left behind. I’m glad Michael Jackson got to spend his last days surrounded by people who got him and understood his genius. People who were interested in his visions and passions and dedicated to bringing them to life with him. I’m glad he was able to see this amazing project coming to life right in front of him and I’m glad he knew he was doing this for 50 sold out shows, which reflected a world that had been waiting for his return to this kind of live performing. If he had to go, I’m glad to know he went, simply alseep, healthy, excited about what he was doing, who he was doing it with and who he was doing it for.

God bless you Michael Jackson.

Thank you Rolling Stone for printing an article without all the “drama” regarding Michael Jackson. This is the first article I have read in a non-African American magazine that focused on what it’s REALLY all about…..His musical genius. We, the fans appreciate it. May something good happen to you.

No One, ever went broke UNDER-ESTIMATING the good taste of the general public.

This has been proven for years by trolls like Michael Jackson and the spoon fed babies like Rolling Stone who promoted him.

R.I.P? NEVER.. they’ll be milking money out of his carcass for eternity like Priscilla and Lisa Preseley have done to Elvis.

SWB from Indiana | 10/23/2009, 11:41 pm EST

Claire Hoffman and Andy Greene thank you for this piece that is respectful to Michael Jackson, Ortega, Payne and all the other performers and artists involved. You chose to report with journalistic integrity and write with passion and insight, rather than with the venom, resentment, condecension, and sneering that so many others inject in their stories related to MJ. How refreshing. Thanks so much.

Malcy | 10/24/2009, 12:13 am EST

MJ always said that Sony had conspired against him for his downfall so that they get his catalogue of songs. They wanted to portray MJ as financially insecure.I only wish that MJ could have done one concert at least before leaving us. It was not to be.all said and done this movie does not have MJ’s blessings. Even though kenny Ortego has surely done a good job, the perfection of MJ will be missed.

Malcy | 10/24/2009, 12:23 am EST

Jonathan, Well written!I agree with you completely. You have put into words my sentiments about the whole thing. This movie is a labour of love for Kenny. God bless him.

bambam | 10/24/2009, 1:48 am EST

what is astonishing in just that tiny clip is that he’s not lip synching, and his voice is not hyper-processed, and he sounds exactly like he sounds on record. maybe he had health issues, but there is no way he could sing that way if he was sick. there is no indication that he was not in top shape. wow is all i can say. what if, what if, what if — what if he were really just a genius-boy-man and was innocent of any actual crime, and completely truly naive? i’m not naive, but he was just so out there that maybe the only laws he defied were the laws of physics.

Anonymous | 10/24/2009, 2:11 am EST

I’m going to exhume this bastard’s corpse, and bury a hatchet into his soft, freakish, hideous skull. Then, I’m going to put MJ’s skeleton into a woodchipper, and grind his bones into a fine salt that I will put on the worst type of fast food, eat it, move it through my bowels, and feed the waste to a retarded dog.

Zack,

I sort of agree… but you’re definitely comparing apples and oranges.

Michael Jackson is the best of the best. Everything he does is meant to be perfect, and he has the talent to do it perfectly. Michael’s skin, surgery have nothing to do with what he has accomplished. Anybody who can’t get over the facts does not matter. Michael has the best fans in the world to love and support him forever.

I have been a fan of the Jackson Five and MJ since I was seven or eight. Now at 48 years old, I have to say that I grew up with Michael and always loved to dance to his beat – some of my best memories!

I miss him and hope the film honors Michael with complete respect for his uncanny ability to sing, dance and love!

JaMarcus | 10/24/2009, 6:48 pm EST

If you see one movie about a freakish, drug-addict, pedophile this year make it “This is it!”

freemanrockin | 10/24/2009, 8:05 pm EST

saw him in concert once halfway thru his show i was bored, half an hour he was the best and the other half was a letdown, in my book he was a good performer but certainly not he best. he did has his moments but not enough for an entire show of pure exitement. He was a good performer at best to describe him.

Cola21 | 10/24/2009, 10:56 pm EST

My problem with this film is that I really see it as just one more way the powers that be can make some dough off of Michael. For all the good and bad that Michael represents, the fact of the matter is that he was manipulated throughout much of his life and nobody stepped in when they needed to. Now, they want to cash in for the last time.

I’m sorry. I won’t be seeing this. I’m fine with my CDs and my memory.

denise | 10/25/2009, 12:23 am EST

BassGuy, you’re shocked about Michael doing the worm? LOL! You must’ve never seen any of his concerts before. He always did just all kinds of crazy stuff like that. He would even throw himself down on the stage, do body slams, bounce on his knees, fall flat on hia back with his legs kicking, etc. Watch the Live at Bucharest DVD if you ever get a chance. Granted, he did all that stuff in the day but even I was a little surprised to learn he was still going to be doing some of those moves at 50. But from what I’ve seen of these clips, I actually think he could have done it!

danw | 10/25/2009, 12:32 am EST

I want to see it because when he died, so many people desecrated his memory – he couldn’t sing, could hardly walk, was so drugged he couldn’t function etc. This was presented as news. I want to see him for myself, I want to see him one last time, and I want to see what I hoped would put him in a new light in the world.

My Baby's crying | 10/25/2009, 7:50 am EST

Since Black or White, there has been usually one strong single per CD – including Invincible – and the rest was really filler. Saw him during the Dangerous tour, and he was boring. Opened with a lip-synched “Jam” in a golden swimsuit costume. Blam! The eighties were finished. And Jackson was the eighties. I don’t believe he broke laws or molested anyone, I really don’t. But I can clearly see he lost it gradually. Just thinking about what he went through, I guess anybody would have deteriorated. Still like that guy. But no matter why, he was not the same, and he was never really groundbreaking after Dangerous, and certainly HIStory. As for this movie, I am completely opposed to it because 1) We know he starved himself to death and was pressured by a professional entourage who did not care for his survival, and this is abject. And 2) He WAS a perfectionist. He would never have allowed people to see the show in such an unfinished stage. But I am sure tears will flow. And why not? He was Michael bleeping Jackson!

Why | 10/25/2009, 10:12 am EST

Well, Peter Goezinya, I trust your life is so perfect and entire, now that your wish has been fulfilled. You should not have anything else to say negatively whatsoever, because you don’t have to worry about anything detrimental happening. Your outward appearance is flawless, your health totally amazing, and you have no mistakes to reflect on. Although God is the only one who is perfect, you seem to be unusually blessed. People do what they want with their money and time, so why fight what others do, if you have your own beliefs? Just be concerned about your family receiving love and understanding from you, and since you have no problems, pray for everyone else. Then no one will have time to sweat how others feel. Please enjoy your blessed life! No matter what is done to the body once it dies, the spirit lives on.

clare | 10/25/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Michael Jackson was more interested in self-deification than making great music. He stopped producing anything of worth after Thriller. After that it was simply “Worship me!”

The movie should be called “That’s all, folks!”

crazy | 10/25/2009, 1:23 pm EST

It amazes it me that 4 months after the man is dead, people still go to articles on him just to bad mouth him. Obviously he really was as superhuman as his fans thought, or there’s no way anyone could still be jealous of him after he is dead and buried. Much love to MJ and his family. I can’t wait for the movie; I’m going to the midnight show tomorrow night!

MG | 10/26/2009, 3:53 pm EST

those pathetic retards who still believe MJ was “probably” a pedophile likely also believe that Obama is “probably” a Muslim and there were “probably” WMDs in Iraq. Get an education and stop letting the press tell you what to believe, morons. The evidence of his innocence is there for those who care to use their critical thinking skills.

Kavian | 10/26/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Well they should have named it “This aint it yet” because it’s been only 3 months since the dude’s death and there’s a documentary coming out…
probably there’s gonna be unreleased songs and unseen footage…etc. coming out every other month and the very people who are responsible for the guy’s death are gonna grow fatter by the day.
let’s face it, we didn’t really like mj anymore that’s why we stood aside while the press destroyed him… and now that he’s dead we’re forgetting about all the shit that he was put through.
so if you really care about mj, u would boycott all the shit that is being milked from his corpse by the people who had him killed.
why are we soooo fuckin’ blind?

MG | 10/26/2009, 5:47 pm EST

I love Michael Jackson. He was so gentle to me. When I was a child, I wondered why the carousel at Neverland was made of leather. And, I always wondered why my bum bum hurt the morning after. I wish I had an answer, but I don’t remember much from those days. Funny, everytime I try to remember, I start hyperventilating.

Fantastic stuff.

the REAL tc | 10/27/2009, 11:39 am EST

people will flock to see this i’m sure, but the reason it’s coming out so soon is that the people producing it know they have to move fast. Micheal Jackson is quickly being forgotten, and the music is not good enough to flog for years like they’ve done to Elvis.

I’ve watched it! It’s great and MJ is really meticulous to the extend of perfectionist! The concert will be a great one if he lived long enough. But to see all his efforts and energy during the rehearsals showed how passion he is in his music and audience! His music will live on long forever. Love MJ forever!

ha ha in your face to all the MJ haters … “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” in film and CD is NUMBER ONE in the world!!!!! And, I’m glad that just for spite everyone involved gets credit and gets paid and the all the Jackson family gets paid too! All MJ had to do was put his name on a record and it would be a hit. Akon, will.i.am, Kanye, R.Kelly, T. Riley, Paul Anka, and all the rest are laughing all the way to bank and so hahahahhahahhahahahahahahha lurking MJ haters … choke on it (figuratively speaking). I’m really a nice person. But, I can’t help but gloat to the naysayers.

Michael’s movie is doing well despite those who thought it wouldn’t or shouldn’t do well. I’ve seen it and enjoyed it. However, I was uncomfortable with how skinny Mike was. In spite of that he did show a great deal of energy and vitality throughout the footage. It would be interesting to view the footage that wasn’t included. I wonder what was left out? Was there footage showing MJ in a more frail physical/mental state than what we saw? I’m sure we’ll never know. Either way, as an historic document archiving what this person invisioned for his London one man (with occasionally A-list guests) mega-concerts it is more than a worthy effort. This is a visual document that will be referenced for years to come. What ever you want to say about MJ, good or bad, there is no denying that the first 35 years of his life were uniquely spectacular and un-paralled by anyone. That includes the Beatles, Elvis and Sinatra. MJ was a true triple-threat artist who had the tools for child hood success followed by immense success as an adult. He showed he could compete with the best (Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra, etc.) and stay there.

MJ was a power house talent of his time but I wouldn’t agree that he was the “greatest entertainer that ever lived” with all due respect to his fans and Barry Gordy. I believe this is a sentimental title only. It will be forgotten by most in a few years. Case in point: Sammy Davis Jr. died in 1990. At that time, which was during MJ’s peek, Davis was concidered the “greatest entertainer that every lived”. He was also a “triple-threat” philanthropic entertainer who broke down color barriers of his day. The latter accomplishment being much more significant than MJ’s without dismissing what MJ did for black artists on MTV. I feel confident that MJ, a fan of Davis, would infact whole heartedly agree with this.

Smoores | 11/5/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Saw it last night and wanted more! This documentary is greatness and you goofballs who can’t see past your own noses will never know what an awesome person he was! I was struck by the closeness between him and the dance crew and even the musicians! He loved everyone and never deserved the riticule he received!!! The real fans know and I find peace in that!

MJ | 11/14/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Wow, all the idiots who hate Michael, what are you doing reading the movie review and then taking your precious time to write how much you hate him. Go back to your pathetic (oops sorry, perfect)lifes. Maybe figure out what contributions (if any) you can make to the world. My guess would be zero.

claire | 11/15/2009, 3:36 am EST

he really the best!!to all of his haters!!!sorry guys but the spectacle of mj is dominating..he broke another record as the HIGHEST CONCERT FILM OF ALL TIME..indeed he leave this world much he entertained it!!!Michael is the best!!

Deborah Ffrench | 11/15/2009, 5:05 am EST

A way will be found to vindicate Michael’s name in time, but it must be remembered that telling the truth is hard to do for some people, especially when they know they would effectively be opening the door to the media’s gaze. I ask all of us now to do stop buying into the thought that we are powerless – and instead, do something very powerful.

An intention has been set in effect. And everyone who wants to, is being asked to ‘Hold The Vision’ of this intention:

‘That the truth of Michael’s integrity and the innocence of his relationships with children will be unequivocally proved and known by all – in our lifetime.’

When you think of Michael, re-affirm that intention in your mind and in your heart. Put all the desire you have for the successful unfolding of this vision into this intention. If the millions who love Michael do this daily, we will do more to affect change than we ever knew possible.

Shawnna | 11/18/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Michael Jackson is and was my hero. He will be missed by thousands and thousands of people who are and always be his fans.

Shawnna | 11/18/2009, 2:27 pm EST

MJ was someone who made me think that I could be a young star just like he was. Also, he helped me think that even if you’re a superstar that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. So my thoughts are with his family and other fans besides me. MJ rest in peace.
