Look, many people on this blog really need to think twice before writing cuz they all sound like a bunch of fools on the reasons why Lil’ Wayne shouldn’t go to jail for gun possession charges. Look, he is lucky that they didn’t slap on a charge of having an illegal substance on the tour bus as well, which could have tacked on an even further sentence to his year in prison. Second, this will benefit his career cuz, if you recall, Tupac was sentence to prison for his rape charges and it boosted up his persona and legacy cuz of his music and that he was associated with Death Row when they were blowing up. He will be fine and maybe it is best for him to understand that he can be touched and things will be taken away if he realizes what’s important to his life. Look at T.I., he learned his lessons even though it caust a price. All need to give it a rest and relax and quit getting your panties in a bunch. He will still have material release during his incarceration. Plus, it gives other artists a time to build and grow with the industry and when he returns along with T.I., the hip hop industry will be even stronger, and possibly, a little wiser.

As far as the “best rapper” thing. Sadly, he is great but does not deserve “best rapper alive” category. That is pretty broad cuz there are many artist that could be in the category as “best rapper alive” in their aspects. Artists like Eminem, Jay Z, Nas, Wu-Tang, Rakim, Public Enemy, T.I., Common, Talib Kweli, Ice Cube, etc. Everyone has their impression of who is the “best rapper alive”. I, personally, don’t think Lil Wayne is that but that’s my opinion and mine alone. So, it is difficult to call that. He is a good “freestyler” but not a good storyteller. When he creates a hit that is a storytelling then he could be in the running for the “best rapper alive”; but until then, I don’t think he is there yet. Sure, he’s got big buzz right now cuz he is oversaturating himself in the mainstream. However, it can come back and hurt him (Ja Rule anyone?!) and this timeout can be beneficial.

I listen to Wayne’s music but have definitely never supported his motives, beliefs, or whatever he refers to within his music. We have to be able to separate entertainment from reality. Lil Wayne’s music is purely entertainment. And it shouldn’t be the reality that we want our community to live by. And we can’t keep placing entertainers on these pedestals as if they are more than the average human. He committed a crime and definitely deserves to pay for it. But, because of his status I don’t think that the sentencing will have too many positive effects (i.e. Setting an example for future criminals). I see it simply as the public’s year long vacation from his music. And with this possible ‘Rebirth’ album debut that idea may not happen. He’ll be back with more ENTERTAINMENT. I don’t like the persona that is portrayed through Lil Wayne’s lyrics because I feel like his music preys on the weak minded and the ones looking for some role model or direction. At the same time I am able to prevent his music from seeping into my ethics and morals that I carry throughout everyday life. It sucks that someone [Wayne] who is regarded so highly by many people has to resort to actions like this but, oh well, it’s clear that we should learn not to follow in their footsteps. He clearly had/has a drug problem and now he gets charged with illegal gun possession. He truly diminishes all hope and vision for oppportunity for the young community because they simply see that his path is the only way to success.
