The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn will try his hand at screenwriting when he co-adapts author Chuck Klosterman’s 2001 memoir Fargo Rock City for the big screen. After acquiring the rights to produce the film, Finn and Late Show With David Letterman scribe Tom Ruprecht will co-write the script, based on Klosterman’s life as a heavy metal fan experiencing high school in 1980s North Dakota. Klosterman will also produce the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Business blog, the memoir will turn into a coming-of-age film centering on a group of friends on the brink of graduation trying to pick up girls and break out of their nerdiness.

“Seventeen or 18 is the perfect age for characters in a movie like this, because it’s at that age that you have drivers licenses and a certain amount of independence, but you’re still young enough that you can totally make terrible decisions,” Finn told THR. “And you’re still young enough that you can have a two-hour argument over whether Mötley Crüe would beat Guns n’ Roses in a fight.”

Finn and Ruprecht are currently working on the first draft of the script and will then seek financing. According to THR, Klosterman’s Killing Yourself to Live is also being developed as a feature film.

As a North Dakota native who loves rock music, Fargo Rock City is a hilarious book.

Given that Craig Finn also grew up in the Midwest, I’m sure he can relate to Klosterman’s work.

It will be interesting to see how it’s adapted for the big screen. I hope they include the part about Klosterman drunk at a Fighting Sioux hockey game. I wonder if UND would allow the crew to shoot in the Ralph Engelstad Arena – even though it wouldn’t be historically accurate as Klosterman went to college before the arena was erected.

Holy crap… there’s no way that this won’t be a let down. There’s too much Midwestern awesomeness colliding with the Hold Steady and Chuck Klosterman… if it actually turned out half as good as its potential, my brain would explode…must prepare for let down.
