The Big News: Twilight Nation couldn’t stand up to the Power of Oprah on the charts, as Michael Buble’s Crazy Love held on to Number One on the Billboard Top 200 after the crooner’s October 9th appearance on Winfrey’s show boosted his disc’s sales to 55 percent more than its first week on shelves. Crazy Love wound up selling 203,000 copies in its second week, outpacing the New Moon soundtrack, which finished at Number Two with 115,000 copies since its rush-release on Friday, October 16th, according to Nielsen SoundScan. By comparison, the Twilight soundtrack finished at Number One with 165,000 copies in its debut week in November 2008.

Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, Barbra Streisand’s Love is the Answer and Miley Cyrus’ Time of our Lives EP placed at Three-Four-Five respectively. In addition to the New Moon soundtrack, which features new tracks from Thom Yorke, the Killers and Muse, two more debuts found their way into the Top 10: The Flaming Lips’ Embryonic moved 32,000 to claim Number Eight, while Mario’s D.N.A. followed at Nine.

Debuts: In the first of many fights for Xmas supremacy, Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart faced off against David Archuleta’s Christmas from the Heart. After seven days, Dylan’s disc claimed yuletide victory over Archuleta’s, selling 20,000 copies to finish at Number 23, seven spots ahead of the former American Idol runner-up. Elsewhere, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and his side project Dead By Sunrise took Number 29 with Out of Ashes and Hall & Oates’ four-disc collection Do What You Want, Be What You Are placed 89th.

Last Week’s Heroes: Buble accomplished the rare feat — nowadays at least — of increasing sales following a strong debut week. The same can’t be said for last week’s Number Two album, Kiss’ Sonic Boom, which dropped down to Number 11 in its second week on the charts. Toby Keith’s American Ride rode the coattails of Kiss’ decent, falling from three to 12 thanks to a 68 percent sales decrease.

I think it’s strange that RS posts chart news before the Billboard site does.

Anyway I’m happy for Buble. We need more actual singers on the charts these days.

what the foo? | 10/21/2009, 1:26 pm EST

i guess twilight is starting to lose its flavor, but I bet it goes to number one next week when it has a full week in stores. Good to hear flaming lips moving on up!

Sia | 10/21/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Well New Moon came out four days after Buble’s CD and well it was leaked too so that probably played a part.
And your talking about a Music stars CD compared to a soundtrack. Doesn’t soundtracks sell after the movie ?

Sione | 10/21/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Trust me Twilight has not lost it’s flavor. Still crazy as ever.

The pole | 10/21/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Uh, how about telling the whole story. New Moon was released on Friday and they stop counting sales, what, Saturday or Sunday?

Michael Bubblehead got whole week of sales. New Moon got a day or two.

Lame reporting, guys.

Gene Simmons | 10/21/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Hmmm…now if I can persuade Michael Buble to don the Catman makeup and play drums for KISS, perhaps we can create a new KISS paradigm and increase our potential demographic through the synergy of KISS’ already rabid fans and the haus fraus who inherently comprise the Buble fan-dom…Paul, what do you think?

Paul Stanley | 10/21/2009, 3:07 pm EST

Gene, does my a** look fat in this leotard?

Paul Stanley | 10/21/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Gene, you used a lot of words that I don’t understand. What’s a Buble?

samrlim | 10/21/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Bob Dylan Defeat David Archuleta, Hahaha !

THAT IS HILLARIOUS – YOU WISH !

samrlim | 10/21/2009, 3:30 pm EST

CORRECTION PLEASE,

PER ITUNE OCTOBER 13, 2009 DAVID ARCHULETA WAS TOP 10 AND BOB DYLAN WAS UNDER 23.

RR | 10/21/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Sam,

David “Bob Dylan for a new millennium” Archuleta may be Top 10 on iTunes, but they measure downloads. Billboard Hot 200 refers to actual CD sales. Big difference.

Give my best to the Mormons, Claymaniacs, and assorted teenyboppers.

RS | 10/21/2009, 4:34 pm EST

“The pole”… the article clearly points out the Twilight CD was rushed out on Friday. CD sales are counted the full week until Tuesday. New Moon will take no. 1 next week. Until then, stop whining and misunderstanding the article.

“Samrlim”… those number are for iTunes only, not physical CD sales sites. No correction is needed.

SN | 10/21/2009, 5:23 pm EST

CD’s…yeah…I remember those. That’s what old people use to listen to their music.

AI Fan | 10/21/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Somewhere else, Dyland & Archuleta were reported at #31 & #32 ~ so which is it? And they were both reported in the 17,000’s, more or less. Anyway, I know David Archuleta is NOT in a “competition” with ANYONE! Maybe Mr. Dylan is, but who cares! And to David’s fans, he is loved no matter WHAT was sold! This is a CHRISTmas album, not an Xmas album. David is just sharing his heart with his fans, old and new, of which I am one! Merry Christmas to ALL!

Peter Pan | 10/21/2009, 7:57 pm EST

PATHETIC HATERS – NO LIFE.

WAWAWAWAWA !!!!!

mj | 10/21/2009, 8:37 pm EST

perhaps your not aware, the previous week buble had only 3 days and sold 17 000 more copies than the new moon soundtrack…thats truly impressive

Josh | 10/21/2009, 8:40 pm EST

I have been thinking about the sales of David and Bob Dylan. I think there is no comparison in who is the better singer. BD is the longer singer, and people of that age do not know how to pirate the CD’s. I have read that David’s music is the most has the most illegal downloads of any singer. To everyone who loves David and wants to continue to hear him sing…don’t download his music illegally. Please go out and buy his CD!!! For you males who like his music, but don’t want to be seen buying it….what a pity!!! Please do the right thing, and lets pay David for his tireless efforts of providing beautiful music for all of us to enjoy!!!

Hocus Pocus | 10/21/2009, 9:40 pm EST

Hillarious, Bob Dylan Beat David Archuleta.

Who would listen to Bob Dylan on Christmas Eve ?

NOT ME !

HAVE YOU HEARD HIM SING ?

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A BOGUS RESULT, ITS JUST A GUTT FEELING.

jack | 10/21/2009, 9:56 pm EST

So, the 68 year old rock legend beat the 18 year old new artist? Good. he saved himself from embarrassment from being beaten by a teen. BTW, that didn’t happen in my stores in Illinois.

???? | 10/21/2009, 10:49 pm EST

you know what its no.2 because people don’t even know the artist twilight soundtrack is still the best than new moon coz they have paramore linkin park muse and mostly robert pattinson beside michael buble is great singer

archie | 10/21/2009, 11:10 pm EST

well, archie is not even established artist and sold almost the same as Dylan. But thanks for comparing David with Dylan. I’m glad David with only 18 is compared with a An American icon like Dylan..
anyway for your info. Archie sold 17,000 records and Dylan 20,000…
and I’m so happy for David, he is still selling records and without promo..

Susan | 10/21/2009, 11:28 pm EST

I read somewhere that Dylan sounds like a “drunk uncle” on this album. Think I’d rather hear the voice of David or Michael for Christmas music.

imrose | 10/22/2009, 1:09 am EST

I listened to some of Bob Dylan’s Christmas album and well I understand sales went to a good cause so for that I am very happy. As to which voice I would rather hear sing Christmas songs, well David Archuleta would be my choice.

And I am a little curious about the post from the guy whose stores in Illinois didn’t sell more Dylan albums.

I recommend listening to David Archuleta’s album with earbuds and it just sounds so beautiful.

The pole | 10/22/2009, 8:41 am EST

I’m not miunderstanding anything, RS. The article states, “Twilight Nation couldn’t stand up to the Power of Oprah on the charts,” which is incredibly misleading.

Were Twilight given a full week of release – not clearly stated in the article – the piece would have to read “The Power of Oprah was defenseless against the Twilight Nation.”

RS | 10/22/2009, 9:05 am EST

The pole… apparently you’re misunderstanding how to spell “misunderstanding.” And if you read the WHOLE article, yes, it clearly states that. That’s what “rush-release on Friday” means. Just because you don’t understand the terminology doesn’t make the article wrong.

Also, as a previous poster explained, Buble sold more CD’s in a shorter time-span a week ago than Twilight did, so the headline makes even more sense than you’re giving it credit for.

I don’t even like Buble, and I don’t care one way or the other about the New Moon soundtrack. I just hate seeing ignorant people use problematic rhetoric because they didn’t get their way.

Anonymous | 10/22/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Oh, I love Dylan’s Christmas album … am I the only one here?

Santa Claus | 10/22/2009, 3:27 pm EST

It’s not a matter who is established artist we are talking here – Who has better voice to listen to this Christmas.

If you think Bob Dylan is a soothing voice for Christmas then good for you.

There is no doubt that David Archuleta has a BEAUTIFUL AMAZING VOICE than Bob Dylan.

I want a beatiful voice for this Christmas Holiday – I prefer David Archuleta 100%.

Jenna | 10/23/2009, 12:37 am EST

Well, I give Kudos to Bob Dylan for giving the proceeds of his album to charity. In my humble opinion that is the main reason his sales were a little higher than David’s. Without that I really don’t think his sales would have been very hiigh. Bob is a great songwriter, but a singer….ummm I’m afraid not, sorry Bob. David Archuleta is an incredible singer/artist and his Christmas album has the most amazing renditions of Christmas songs I have ever heard, simply stunning! For Holiday music, David’s Christmas album is a must have!

Yuo cna rdea tihs godo jbo | 10/23/2009, 2:44 pm EST

G00D J0B THE CD SUCKS DAVID ARCHULETA IS BETTER BUT YOU ARE VERY FUNNY SO =/

Regal | 10/25/2009, 7:10 pm EST

What’s with all the pissy David Archuleta fans posting here? Seriously, do you really believe he and Bob Dylan were in a heated contest? These are two different artists, with two different fan bases, and two different approaches to making music.

Really, based on some of the comments here, I’m wondering why some of you are even coming to a site like Rolling Stone. You can like David Archuleta, that’s fine, but you’re hating on one of the most important artists in MUSIC HISTORY…a man who is one of the most influential people in modern music…a man who has sold tens of millions of records (since that’s all some of you seem to understand)…a man who is widely regarded as the greatest songwriter who ever live. And you’re doing it for no reason.

What’s the point? Did Bob Dylan steal your candy when you were a baby? Stop showing your ignorance toward real music, and stop acting like Bob Dylan and David Archuleta are in some kind of feud. They don’t care. They’re just trying to do some Christmas music…and in Dylan’s case, give all the money to charity.

mara08 | 11/4/2009, 10:00 am EST

Well, all I know is after listening to one of BD’s songs in his album, I’m feeling so thirsty, so tired and so old at the same time. I want to hear a smooth silky voice for a Christmas album not a harsh, tired old monotone voice. I’m sorry it’s just my two cents.
